WREXHAM. ROYAL WELSH FUSILI ERs.-The following are extracts from the despatch of Lieutenant-General C. G. Arbuthnot, Commander-in-Chief Madras Army, relative to the recent operations in Burmah —" 21—Brigadier-General Cox has brought the o. following officers to notice :-Lieutenant-Colonel E. S. Creek and Captain H. T. Lyle, 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. 22-Captain Wace, Royal Artillery, was in command of the Hazara Mountain Battery until wounded in the first advance on Katran. Captain Lyle, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, suc- ceeded Capt. Wace in the command of the expe- dition above referred to when the latter was wounded, until he was wounded himself. I recommend both these officers for promotion. 23 Before leaving the subject of regimental officers who have done conspicuous work, I would mention the important service rendered by Colonel Tilly and the officers and men of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. From the commencement of the campaign this regiment has borne a part worthy of its high records, and although at Bhamo it has been some- what removed from the centres of late action, yet in the earlier stages of the campaign no regiment had harder or more trying work. I would specially mention Colonel J. Tilly, Lieut. A. W. G. Cole Lieut. A. C. King, Lieut. A. P. G. Gough."

NAUTICAL SUPERSTITION.—Mr. David .Jones, of the Welsh Mercantile Marine, shipowner, proposed to call a vessel recently completed the Eisteddfod. A Saxon seaman objected to that as an unlucky name, because a ship so denominated would be sure to spring a leek.—Punch. Dl' DISASTEUS AVOIDED.—Jones loses his train and his temper, and is miserable all day. Both losses were caused by the stoppage of his watch through not being wound. It was not wound because he had lost the key, having left it in his cast-off waist- 7 0 s coat pocket, now disposed of by the servant as old clothes. To meet such a contingency, Mr. J. YV. Benson, of Ludgate-hill, London, now makes his well-known" Ludgate" watch, which obtained the gold medal at the Inventions' Exhibition, with strong keyless action, the advantages of which are :-(1) There is no risk of over-winding. (2) Better time is obtained, as, the fluidity of the oil being longer preserved, cleaning is not required so frequently. (3) The case, not being opened for daily winding, is dust and damp-proof. (4) There is no kev to lose REMINISCENCES OF THE EISTEDDFOD TIME.— Says a correspondent :-Chester Station was the scene of great animation on Monday night, as it was from there that most of the excursionists travelled. The station resounded with the musical voices of the Cymry, singing patriotic songs and other tunes. The animation continued, so did the singing, for a considerable portion of the journey, and at the one stoppage for refreshment the refreshment room there was besieged by the exuberant excursionists who showed their capacity for disposing of hot tea and coffee (and a drop of something else too !) in about as substantial a man- ner as the attendants at the rooms could wish for. Who are these lot?" was inquired by some one at one of the stations that the trains passed through. 14 Oh, they are the Welsh, they're going to that' do in London, the——it's a deuce of a name," he said, "I can't pronounce it, but I hear i'ts a big 'do."— their affair." Of course he referred to the Eistedd- fod, but he couldn't pronounce the word. That word did bother the Cockneys that week. Where- ever one went in the great city, the word was to be seen printed in big letters, and it was quite amusing to hear the Londoners try and solve the meaning of it. But the best joke of all in this direction came from a shoeblack. This useful member of society was engaged beautifying the appearance of certain Mold gentlemen, and whilst engaged in his opera- tion some sandwich men passed by, carrying the placards announcing the Eisteddfod. One of the party inquired of the young Cockney what the word meant, and he got his answer quickly. With the civility and readiness characteristic of the London shoeblack, this young Saxon—who was no linguist but whose knowledge was confined to one, replied' I believe it's a new (h)aerated water that they've got out! Of course this reply caused considerable merriment to the Welshmen, but the youth who vouchsafed the information remained blissful in his ignorance of the meaning of the" big word," as it was frequently called. ° A STARTLING PREDICTION.—A warning voice is raised against the indiscriminate boring for natural gas in the United States. A correspondent predicts an overwhelming disaster to the sections of the country occupied by the natural gas wells, and is so positive in his assertions that he urges the calling of an extra session of Congress to take some action in the matter. According to him. further boring for natural gas should be prohibited by stringent laws. The good people of Ohio and Indiana, while trying to develop the gas magazines, do not take time to consider, he says, that they are toying with a force that may destroy their country and themselves. The danger that impends is well known to scientists. Two hundred years ago in China there was just such a craze about natural gas as there exists in the United States at the present day. Gas wells were sunk with as much vigour as the Celestials were capable of but, owing to a gas explosion that killed several millions of people, and tore up and destroyed a large district of country, leaving a large inland sea, known on the maps as Lake Foo ChanV the horing of any more gas wells was then and there prohibited by law. According to Chinese accounts many large and heavy-pressure gas wells were struck, and in some districts wells were sunk quite near to each other. Gas was lighted as soon as struck, as is now done in America. It is stated that one well, with its unusual pressure, by induction or back draught pulled down into the earth the burning gas of a smaller well, resulting in a dreadful explo- sion of a large district and destroying the inhabitants thereof. Lake Foo Chang rests on this district. The same catastrophe i.i imminent in the United States, the writer in question urges, unless the laws restrict further developments in boring so many wells. Should an explosion occur, there will be such an Upheaval as will dwarf the most terrible earthquakes ever known. The country along the gas belt from Toledo through Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky will be ripped up ro the depth of 1200 to 1500 feet and flopped over like a pancake, leaving a chasm through which the waters of Lake Erie will come bowlino- down, filling the Ohio and Mississippi valleys, and blotting theui out for ever. BETTWSYCOED. A NARROW ESCAPE.—On Thursday, whilst a number of boys were playing on the rocks in the river Llugwy by Pont-y-Pair Bridge, one of their number, in jumping1 from rock to rock. missed his footing, and would have been carried down the stream and over the falls but for the timely assis- tance of Mr. Leslie Crotty, a gentleman well known in the dramatic world. It appears that Mr. Crotty, with his wife and some friends, had gone for a walk in the evening, and stayed to admire the beautiful scenery and the waterfalls at Pont-y-Pair Bridge, when Mr. Crotty's attention was attracted to the number of boys who were playing by the water and daring each other to cross the stream by jumping from rock to rock. Mr. Crotty seeing one of the boys attempting a dangerous leap, called to him, but the youth, paying no attention, sprang out and missing his footing, fell into the water, and had it not been for the bravery of Mr. Crotty, who at once went to his assistance, he would have been carried over the falls and drowned. Mr. Crotty, who escaped with a few bruises, and a considerable wetting, hastened back to the Waterloo Hotel, where he was staying, and by taking prompt measures suffered no ill effects from his immersion. -n_
