The Cymric Causerie.!
The Cymric Causerie.! NOTES AND NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPALITY. A Column of Pars of Persons and Places of Interest and Instruc- tion to Old and Young. Artiste who haunt Bettwgveoed for sketches of Nature at her best know the place as Bttev Code. "All properlr-condudoo and well-managed pnbl'C libraries are always in debt." is the opinion of tlie chairman of the Barry Sohooi Board. A Welsh clergyman has 38 buttons on his coat, which are ail used. By Easter he is going to add another, so as to correspond with the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion. The Rhondda Glee ISoeiety are great favourites in Pembrokeshire and Cardigan- shire. They have just given their twenty- seventh concert there since last August. Parish council meetings are convenient for small tradesmen who want to meet their ous- tomers. At the close of one of those meetings in Glamorgan a shoemaker measured a col- league for a pair of boots. On the strength of having played marbles at school with Mr. D. H. Lewis, the Neath dra.per, a Carmarthenshire parish councillor now writes to ask, "Can you inform me where to procure the 'new married "t go after ten p. m., only tick ?'" Lientenant-colonel Denne, who acted as clerk of the scales at Tenby Races, is a distinguished soldier. He led his regiment—the 4th Dragoons -at Tel-el-Kebir, oud afterwards ha.d charge of Arabi. Colonel Denne has now retired and lire in Ireland, but winters at Tenby. During the past week Mr. Lascelles Carr has been inundated with abusive letters from teetotallers, but those who aimed at adding injury to insult by sending their letters un- stamped were foiled, for the chief issued orders that unpaid letters sliould not be taken in. The 2nd Battalion Devonshire Kegiment, from Devon port, will, in all probability, re- place the Welsh Regiment at Pembroke Doek in July next. It JS stated, however, that efforts will be made to have the South Wales Borderers (24th Regiment) from Portsmouth there instead. Madame Patti-Nicolini. writing in the "New York World. says:—"There is no country in the world where the domestic virtues are more abundantly rnd beautifully exemplified than in Wales. There is no country where there is more parental devotion and filial affection, and all these qualities appear to especial advantage at auy festal season. Mr. Donald Maclean is a. careless reasoner. He hopes the tines for shel>eening in Cardiff will soon be raised. Mr. Maclean actually said this while holding in his liand a document showing that out of the la^t. 347 convictions only sixteen paid the fines. while nearly every one of the other 331 went to gaol for the maxi- mum term of imprisonment. Colonel Howard Vincent found himself amongst friends, one might say, at Pontypridd on Saturday night. It was close by he com- menced his career rrith the Welsh Fusiliers, a regiment respected by every Welshman and Welsh woma.n. Another tie between the gallant, colonel and Pontypridd is Mr. James Jeffry," one of his earliest friends at Sheffield, whose lines have only recently fallen as Conser- vatiTe agent in Bad Glamurgar. David Cox, the painter, was a frequent visi- I tor to Bettws. and on one oecssiou he was much displeased to find that some waggish artist friends from London had painted outside on the church walls some rough caricatures of the parson thundering from the puipit and the clerk nodding underneath. In the evening, accompanied by a friend, and carrying a basin of water and a brush. Cox marched to the scene, and never rested until every trace of the paint had been washed off. A legend dies hard. especially when there is some practical benefit attending its preserva- tion. To thi^ day Welsh drovers taking cattle to London depasture their herds freely on the heath or common land near Hagheiiden, for the story runs that once upon a time a great battle was raging there between the Saxons and Danes, but n party of Britons coming up gave their aid to the Saxons, who thus won the day. In memory of this "Deadnian Danes Valley" is free to the Welshmen. Colonel Howard Vincent made some happy references to two Conservatives in particular in his Pontypridd address. The one was Mr. Maclean, the prospective member for Cardiff, whom the colonel characterised as a man of wonderful knowledge of modern politics the other Mr. Jeffry, the new Conservative stgent at Pontypridd, whom Colonel Vincent said knew two things-first. the way to win people's hearts, a.nd. secondly, the way to win their votes' This he amply proved during his career at Sheffield. The "new woman is not a new subject so far as YYales is concerned- Ages ago the question was one of those things that engaged the atten- tion of the intellectual jnsople of Cardigan in the neighbourhood of Aberayron. The question was decided by a plebiscite, and the majority voted in favour of the "old" woman. The fact is perpetuated in the name of the parish ill which that sleepy little place lies, which is allied to this day "Hen Fenyw. The word appeals sometimes in its correct forb. Hen Fynyw. The new evangelist, like the new woman and the new jouriualism, has thoroughly learnt the art of boom. This how a Grangetnvvn evangelist "bjlL," his appearance in Cudoxton :— CHEAP EXCl'RSIOX! From the City of Destruction To the Celestial City. Tickets gratis, to be obtained at the Fountains open for Sin and Uneleanness. The Fare lieing Paid by The Crucified Lamb of God At the Oroes of Calvary. Another Welsh journalist has received a call to London. Mr. W. Llewelyn Williams, who started the "South Wales Star" in Barry and the "South Wales Daily Post in Swansea, and who has latterly been assistant editor of our Radical contemporary, and invented and carried on its column of "Welsh Gossip," will in a few weeks take up the responsible position of sub- editor of the London "Star." It was Mr. Williams who was recently disturbing the poli- tical peace of Swansea District, and was within an act' of securing the Radical candidature now fondly hugged by Mr. Brvninor Jones. It is related of George IV., when he was in Breconshire, that he came in contact one day with Major Gwynne Holford, whose, residence at Buckland was last week burnt to the ground that he started back surprised, and exclaimed, "Hallo. Holford. how the dickens did you come here?" The King, when Regent, knew the major personally, but did not know that the veteran of Waterloo had retired to a Brecon- shire seat. The major was so impressed with the strategic arrangement, of his forces by Welli ngton at Waterloo that he had his planta- tions at Buckland laid out in imitation of the squares and columns on the Belgian battle- field.

LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. BABES IN THE WOOD AT CARDIFF THEATRE ROYAL. I. The pantomime "Babes in the Wood," after a. most successful run at the Theatre Royal. Cardiff, will conclude this week, when those artistes who have. during their stay in the Welsh Metropolis, helped to entertain and amuse the large audiences which have nightly filled Mr. Fletcher's popular house will take their benefits. Wednesday will he the benefit, aig-ht l'f i\1r. 1'. who lias made himself so popular in the character of "Jabez Balrivo," one of the wicked robbers, not to mention his many clever exhibitions of skill and strength, and Miss Florence Haves, who has made a very charming "Dolly Dumpling, The following night (Thursday) the Sisters Morgan will take their benefit. All who have seen the pantomime have unhesitatingly asserted that the sisters are a-s charming a pair of little actresses as one could wish to see. and on Thursday, when several additional artistes wiil appear, the house ought to be a bumper one. Friday will be the benefit night of Nell lugiani ("Robin Hood' i. and Saturday that of Mr. Kennedy Alien, who has shown his versa- tilitv in the admirable way in which he has portrayed "The Baroness." Next week Charley s- Aunt" will make a welcome re- appearance at the Royal, and the week follow- ing Miss Fortescue and her celebrated comjjany will visit the town. GRAND THEATRE, CARDIFF. Those who visit the Grand Theatre this week are sure to find out the truth of the assertion that as a pantomime draws to a. close the fun becomes faster and more furious. 'Robinson Crusoe" has been pronounced on all sides an unqualified success, and its withdrawal when at the height of its popularity is a matter for regret. During the week several special attrac- tions will be introduced, but the great nights will be Wednesday and Friday, when those artir-tes to whom the success of the pantomime is^ chiefly due will receive their benefits. On Wednesday evening Miss Melinda Mav will receive a recognition for the able manner with which she ha.s played the role of principal i)ov in the character of "Robinson Crusoe. The occasion will be marked bv the introduction into the pantomime of several additional songs which include "Oid Ivent Road." bv Mr J. E. ( and "Molly allcll a.nd the Babv bv ¡ Miss Mav herself. Friday will be the joint benefit night of Mr..I. E. These wonderful animals will trv to prove how much suj-enor as a mode of attack is the li-tic art to the horns which the ordinary ram is contented ()T_ to put up with. The two debutentt? to the world of pugilism have won golden opinions from all authorities on the use of the gloves, and their exhibition is well worth seeing. The T oiTast combination make a welcome visit with a-tctner of their delightful comic sketches. The spectacle "('lii.ua, in which over 60 local chil- dren, trained by Mr. W. Selkirk, are engaged will be presented to the public lor the final v eek. Their performance, which iias re- ceived the praise of the London critics, is an especially clever one. and it is doubtful whether the "Family," containing, as it does, members of both sexe, has ever lyeeli equalled by other acrobats on the parallel c-id horizontal liars. A liovel sensation, a serpentine dance an the slack-wire, will be given by the Beautiful Jes- sica, and the Reeves Combination will contri- bute a sketch, in which are several delightful songs and some very graceful dancing. Other names upon the bills are those of Lottie Lennox, seno comedy songstress: Tracy Mid Lyons, di'tttists and dancers; Cissie Kent, vocalist<; and the Zanettos, who excel in tricks of sleight, of hand. of hand. NEWPORT. The mammoth tableaux representing those f v-ell-k.nown military pictures bv Miss Elizabeth Thompson, "The Roll Call, "The Return from Balapl-iva." cte., which have been recently appearing with such great success at both of Mr. Stoll's houses at Cardiff, will this week be introduced to the patrons of the Newport Empire. A BODY EXHUMED.
A BODY EXHUMED. MOTHER IDENTIFIED HER MISSING SON AT CARDIFF. On the 30th of September last the body of a man was found in the East Dock, Cardiff, and an inquest was held by the borough coroner on the 2nd of October, and a verdict of "Found drowned" returned. No one had up to that time identified the body, but a description of the deceased, the clothes, &c., appeared in the "Western Mail." Shortly afterwards the coroner received a communica- tion from Port Taibot requesting further par- ticulars respecting the okrtlies. These were supplied by the coroner, and tibe mother of a man named George Thomas, a tin-plate worker residing there, believed the body to be that of her sou. In a few days a letter was sent to the Home Secretary asking for an order to exhume the bouy. After a good deal of delay for further inquiries to be made, an order to exhume the body was sent to the coroner on Friday. On Saturday the mother and one of her sous attended at. the office of the coroner, and were examined by him. after which the parties proceeded to the New Ceme- tery. where the 1 xxiy wa- exhumed in the presence of the manager, the coffin opened, and the mother a:t once recognised the body as that of her son. WlwlI the body was interred the features were, much swollen from the deceased having beii for a number of days m the water.
