OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY A SNEGGLER'S COURTESY. Franz was disappointed. From his seat on he doorsill of the little hoepice elingitiff tc the mountain side, he looked across the valley to the winding blue line of the river and the dis- taut mountain, tops softened in the afternoon haze—and sighed. Now this was the very afternoon when Franz should have been the last ma.n in the world to sigh, for to-morrow he would marry Tresta, and on the afternoon before his wedding day the man who would marry the prettiest girl in the little village at the foct of the mountain should have found for himself a more pleasant occupa- tion than nursing a titter disappointment. It was not that Tresta was not the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Her dlark eyea and wealth of sombre hair vrere the prizes coveted by all the young men, and the envy of all the village maidens. It was not that Franz had not been completely suor«essful in his suit. Thanks to his own good looks and the money that tourists had left at his little mountain inn it was quite to the contrary. It was not even that the morrow might mar the festivities with rain. There wore only lazy bits of flecoy cloud lagging across the sky. It was not in any of these that his disappointment lay. Franz had pictured the wedding to himself countless timee, and always the ohief detail was the music. But alas! the organist was ill. It was too late to find a substitute, and he had counted so much on it. He. could have covered his fr.ee with his hands Uld oried like an over-1 flcown boy, ior. a wedding day comes but onoe in a lifeti-e-that is. I I such men as Franz. Of course tlipre would be the candles and the village festivities, but Franz had set his heart on the very ft art that would now be lacking. If only—hut j10 sighed, and began to wish he had never contemplated matrimony. He sat IODZ in the afternoon sunshine, smok- ing, dreaming, regretting, and presently, soo-theel by his pipe, and' the soft rustling of the leaves of the grape vÎlle above his head, he fell asleep. The shadow of the mountain was well across the velley xhen he beheld a stranger standing before him. At first he was uncertain whether it was a real personage or some new character which had crept into his dreanii. He sat up and rubbed 1iis sleepy eyes. The stranger removed his hat and bowed low. "I am Borry to disturb you. Can I get a bumper of your alo." And being assured that he could, b,e followed the innkeeper into the tap-room. { Imagine Frau^ Furpr: ? when he saw the stranger ologe the iisn vy oak door, and, delibe- rately eliding the bolt, place his broad shoul- doers against the sojid timbers. ■'There llwd be no fear cf a lack of secrecy," said Fran7!, as he stooped to draw the ale. His gusst glanced at. tlie heavily-stvidded door. "1 should say not," lie baid. The ale he drank with evident relLsit. "That is good," said he, and put the stone bumper down on the iablt with a thump. "Now." he eoniiniKd, "for bwijieei. The peasants li^renboute tell me that Franz, the keeper of the au We mountaiu. in tœ only. man who can guide me through the three short passes to the Crescent. Is that rigfet?" "At most times yes, but not now." "Are you not Franz?" "I am," was the innkeeper's short-sighted reply. "Very R-ood," and the stranger showed his white teeth iu a broad smile. "Blub I cannot go," Franz expostulated. "To- morrow is my wedding-day. and, surely, he is an ungallant cad who postpones his wedding- day for the paltry coin*; that guiding a etraiiger through the passes brings. The White Horse is but a few miles to the South. The guides are the best in the mountains, and the pass is much easier to travel. 'Tis the delay of but a fe-v hours you incur by taking it." Tiie stranger smiled again. "When I introduce myself," he said, "you will understand better how much a few hours means to -iie. He pieked up a piece of chalk, which was used in marking cask heads, and wrote on the door the word "Zedda." Franz gasped. Hie guest was the ffioafe noted smuggler and oirtlaw of the mountains. But he stuck bravely to his assertion. "Zedda or no Zedda," he sa.id, striking the table with his clenched fist, "I will not go." "I respect your gallantry," the outlaw said smilingly, "but-" He gave a peculiar thrilling whistle, and through the iron grating of the tap-room's little window Franz saw a score of roughly-dressed men come from their place of concealment behind the inn." Resistanoe was out of the question. Franz accepted the position with anything but alacrity. And so it happened that the sunrise of his wedding-day found Franz at the head of a baud of jokuif smugglers ia the these pusee. J .?- At first he accepted his fate with grim silence, but as the sun rose higher no one, how- ever accustomed to the scenes, could resist the influence of the grandeur of rock and rugged outline, and Franz felt his heart. warm and glow as it always did when he was here among the mountains he loved best. Wlhen the snow at the entrance of the third pass was crunching under their feet he was walking beside the leader telling him all about the coming marriage, about Tresta, and espe- cially about his disappointment at not having the music. Zedda) listened with thoughtful interest until at sunset the Crescent was reached and the journey was at an end. Do you know the mountains well enough I to go baok at midme.ii.' Very well. I shall send a mrm back with you, that hereafter we may know the way. Now for a rest." And the ohief led the way to a shelter of boughs. Franz sleptr soundly until awakened1 by the smuggler who was to go back with him. Refreshed with wine and meat they started out. His companion was muffled to the eyes and seldom spoke. They travelled hardi all night, and a few hours after sunrise next day reached the end of the first pal:;l!. Here the smuggler stopped, and, bidding Franz adieu, watched him descend the path which led down to the little inn. Tresta laughed and cried when Franz told his adventure, and late thatt afternoon they went to the church where the old priest awaited them. As Franz with Tresta on his arm came up the aisle at the head of the little procession, the church was suddenly filled with such music ae he had never heard before. He looked down inquiringly at his betrothed, but her eyes i&Uod. with wander, were already turned to hi*! He thought much lesSl of the ceremony than of the soft music which stole down from the organ loft. And when they turned from the altar the triumphal notes rose again, and not until the door was reached did they cease. Franz was in an ecstasy of joy. Over in the corner, where the winding stairs led up to the organ loft, a mn ed figure was sloiwly working its way between the few vil- lagers who were present towards the door. No one noticed the etranger until Franz espied him in the half gloom. Then suddenly the truth flashed upon his mind, mid, leaving his bride, he rushed over to the stranger and seized him by both hand?. The dark lips parted, and the even, white teeth gave prominence to that smile. And Franz alone knows it was Zedda. ——1—mmm1 n.

I MUNICIPAL YACNCIES JT CARDIFF. DEPUTATIONS WAIT ON PROMI- NENT MEN It seems to be taken for granted that tJR vacancies on the aldermanic bench of the Cardiff County Council will resuit in the Aera- tion of the mayor and Councillor Rams dale. Accordingly, both political parties are en- deavouring to find suitable candidates for the Roatli and Park Wards. An influential deputation waited upon ex-Councillor Shackell on Thursday night with a request that he would come out. in the Conservative interest for the Roath Ward. Mr. Shackell did not hold out any hope of returning to public life at present, but promised to con- sider the views of the deputation, and give a definite answer later. Great disappoint- ment will be felt by a large number of bur- gesses in the ward if Mr. Shackell cannot be induced to fill once more one of the seats in the council, his services in the past having been thoroughly appreciated, not only by those who elected him, but the ratepayers generally throughout the town. A deputa- tion representing the Liberal party has also waited upon Mr. Charles Clarke, Newport- road. with the view of inducing him to be- come, a candidate. It was pressed upon him that he was about the only man who could retain the seat for the party, but Mr. Clarke, litre Mr. Shackell, has so far declined to give ¡ a deiinite answer.

RESIGNATION OF PROF. HUGHES.
RESIGNATION OF PROF. HUGHES. GENEROUS GIFT TO THE SOUTH WALES COLLEGE. General regret will be felt at the annotinoe- ment now made that Professor Alfred Hughes ¡ will be compelled, for family reasons, to leave the neighbsurhood of Cardiff before the end of the winter session, and, consequeatty, to resign his chair of anatomy at the University College. Before leaving, he hag placed at the disposal of the oolkge, under very generous conditions, I his anatomical collcotio-ne, on which he has spent large sums of money and many yearw of Jsibour. Professor Hughes brought with him from Edinburgh the reputation of being one of the most popular and successful of the extra- mural teachers, and during his short tenure of the chair at Cardiff he he« greatly added to hie former reputation. It ie fresh in the minds of I most ef us that one of his students obtained only last summer the highest distinction in anatomy given by the University of London, an honour which has only twice bet n the fortune I of any provincial edhool to obtain during the last twenty years. When Professor Hughes goes the students will lose the guidanoe of a ckar and incisive teacher, and one who never spared himself in the exercis? of his teaching work. His colleagues and very many in the town will miss his genial a.nd lovable presence, but his name will ren ain in the history of the school as the fiiwt teacher and able organiser of an import-ant department. It is hoped by many th:.t even in the noar future Professor Hughes may return for short periods of time £ -nd continue his anatomical inveertagations at the college under the title of Emeritus professor.
