Old and New London begins this month its third volume, which will principally treat of the West End. We mobt heartily recommend it to aU. The "History of Protestanti-'m has reached the accession of William III. to the English throne. "Cassell's Family Magazine" is very interesting this month. There are, among others, good ai-ticles on "The Comet of 1381," by J. Munro, F.R.S., and "Evening Colleges for Women," by M. Grog'tn. There are some very good tales also. Little Folks" is as interesting as usual for boys and girls. It contains this month the usual quantity of tales and instructive articles. Accordingly there h.tvs been many lives of Scott issued to the world,but none are so com- plete, or have been so much admired, as that of Lockhart. Being Scott's son-in-law, he was placed in a better position than any other writer could be. Me was intimately acquainted with his subject, und had all his letters and personal writings; of which he has made a very good u.-e. He has presented to the v.'orld a book which can- not fail to make its way wherever it goes. It is interspersed from beginning to end with charac- teristic anecdotes and pleasant recollections, which never fail to amuse or interest the reader. The new edition lJBfnre our notice is, of course, in an abridged form. The first edition consisted of seven large volumes, and consequently beyond the roach of many. Nothing, however, of real interest has been left out, and we can well recom- mend it to all as one of the mo:-t interesting books they can get. UTILIZATION OF THE TOWN REFUSE AT CARDIFF. The Health Committee of the Cardiff Corpora- tion have for some time had under their considera- tion the scheme of Alderman Winstoiie for the 10 utilization of the refuse collected from houses of Cardiff by the scavengers. At some of the large towns in the country this is done to a considerable extent, the result being a large reduction in the charge for the scavenging of the town, arising from the sale of material selected from the refuse aftorcollcction. Muchofthisrefuseis found to consi.-it of bones, old scrap iron, rags, etc., which r.re sorted by persons employed for the purpose, and afterwards sold to dealers in marine stores. The health committee had yesterday an interview v. ith Mr J. S. Corbett, and leased from the Mar- quis of Bute a piece of land, about three-quarters of a.n acre in extent, near the Old DumbaIIs." The terms agreed upon were Is. per yard, and the annual rent of the land will be about E15. On this will be deposited the whole of the refuse from the dust carts, and persons will bo employed to turn it over, collecting in heaps, rags, bones, iron, etc.. to be disposed of to the marine store dealers. The committee were much pleased with the ready manner in which Mr Corbett met them, aud the very reasonable terms on which lie offered to lea-fie the land, and provide even a larger area of ground for the purpose should it he required. The scheme is one which Alderman Winstono laid be- fore the corporation some years since, but the project was then put aside as impracticable.

FATAL FIRE IN PARIS. EXCITING SCENES. GALLANT RESCUES. The fire on Sunday night in the Hue Port Mahon, which broke out in aladics' outfittiii, establislnnent, was caused by the negligence of the shopkeeper, MdIIe. Boulet, who left on the counter a lighted lamp. rre.suma.bly some light object was cauglit in the draught and blown on to the name. The whole of the ground floor must have been on fire before the alarm was given. It was then too late for the inhabitants of the other stories to run downstairs. Duvivier have been found on the fifth noor. Taking an heroic resolution, she tore up sheets, knotted them together, and fastening them as a rope to the iron window guard began to descend. The numerous spectators in the street looked on with ba,ted breath. When she was half way down a knot undid, and she fell. Her skull was smashed. A young man, who rushed forward to break her fall, was overborne by her weight, and had his arms broken. In hanging to a cord which he had thrown out of an upper story to save himself and his mother, a vintner had his handout fearfully, but he hung on still and succeeded. A fireman, who had carried four women from the sixth noor, ascended for others. The floor giving way under him, he got out of a, window on the fifth noor. Being pursued by the flamcs, and seeing a at a pro- jecting angle, he jumped at it and caught it. He hung on for five or six minutes, when he was rescued. Another volunteered to rush into the burning house and isolate the gas meter. He got his comrades to souse him first, and returned only ahttleburnedandscaldcd. The f!re broke out at half-pastten. Having done the Lake District well, he has been tempted to give to the pedestrian and tourist "The Highlands of Scot- land" (London Dulau and Co.), illustrated by 29 maps and plans executed by Mr Bartholomev?. SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT A TANNERY IN BRISTOL. On Tuesday an accident of a fatal character took place at the tannery of Messrs Hassell and Cogau, PennyweH-road, Uristol, one man being killed and two others seriously injure! It ap- pears that workmen for the past two or three days have been engaged in clearing out a drain on the premises of the firm, and the pit opened was about six feet deep and several feet broad. On Tuesday a man named James Lcworthy, in the course of his work, went into the pit, and shortly afteru'ards another workman noticed that he had been overcome by the effects of the noxious fumes. Alarm was ft once given, and two young men named Wilham Dunn and Charles Weeks went into the pit to render assistance to the unfortunate man, and they were also rendered powerless.
