Aberdare County School. The old students of the above school held their first Annual Picnic on Thursday, August 7th. At 12.30., the party, which numbered about 30, started from Aberdare for Pont-Neath-Vaughan, In spite of rather inclement weather, a pleasant after. noon was spent, visiting the falls in the neighbourhood. Following the tea at the Angel Hotel, a meeting was held, at which it was unanimously decided to form an old students society. It was agreed that it should be called the Aberdare County School Past Students Society. The following officers were elected :—President, Mr. W. Jenkyn Thomas, M.A., Head Master of County School; Vice-Presidents, Miss J. Griffiths, Mr. E. G. Miles; Treasurer, Mr. J. W. Dodgson, B.S.; Secre- tary, Mr. C. S. Reed, 2, Gloucester terrace, Aberdare. The following were appointed members of the committee:- Misses Gwladys Rake, M. Price, Tydien Jones, M. Daniel, M. A. Williams, L. Bishop and A. Walker; Messrs. W. C. Cox, S. Shipton, N. Picton, E. Davies, E. J. Hughes and E. Parry. The proceedings terminated with I the usual votes of thanks.

Highland Place Unitarian Church. A question for Kiug Edward VII." was the subject of the Rev. H. Fisher Short on Sunday evening. For the true King he went back to Alfred the Great. With the exception of Alfred and one or two others, all the long line of kings had been anything and everything but true kings. Had they emulated Alfred, the history of England would read very different to what it did. King Edward VII was nothing more than a figure-head. He reigned but the people ruled through the House of Commons. But the jvmg was nal dc v'*J > £ aw cr. A once said "Power is ue\ er good unless he be good that has it.' How would Edward VII use his power ? No man had a right to expect loyalty unless he was worthy of it. There was not an evil which cursed the land and spoiled the life of the people, which, if the King set his face against it with half the zeal which Alfred "threw into his work, could not he greatly reduced, if not completely eradicated. By a life of up- rightness, a life sincerely devoted to the happiness and well-being of the people, he could so influence and direct the forces of the nation as to make the powers of the Czar of all tha Russias and the Emperor of Germany sink into insignificance.

God is Love. WITH APOLOGIES TO THE AUTHOR OF EXCELSIOR." (Dr, Agar Beet says that the text on which he has based his" broad" teaching is "God is Love.") The shades of doubt were falling fast When from the chair of Richmond passed A man, who bore amid despise A creed built on the strange device "My God is Love." "0 stay," said dogma, "stay, and rest Thy muddled head upon this breast;" The tear of love stood in his eye, While a clear echo from on high Rang God is Love." Beware the sceptic's withered branch! Beware the awful avalanche! Beware the reprobate's dark night! A voice replied, unswayed by fright, My God is Love." The pious monks, who strictly guard The ancient faith, shot heavenward A bitter oft-repeated prayer, But still the voice from Richmond chair Cried "God is Love." Being followed by. the faithful hound The hunted heretic was found Still grasping as if in a vice The doctrine with the strange device "My God is Love." There in the Conference that day The modern Bruno stood at bay, While from the sky, serene and far. John Wesley's voice fell like a star, My God is Love."

Aberdare Swimming Baths. Opening Ceremony. Last Saturday, Coronation Day, was the day selected for the Formal Opening of the Swimming Baths erected by the Aberdare District Council in the Public Park. Among those present were Mr. A. S. Pleace, High Constable; Col. Phillips, Clerk of the District Council; Mr. E. Morgan, Chairman Councillor L. N. Williams, Councillor Owen Harries; Messrs. O. Williams, Surveyor; A. F. Morris. Assistant Surveyor; Ernest Williams P. T. Rees, Solicitor; T. D. Hughes, Boot Hotel; Rev. R. J. Jones, &c. Mr. L. N. Williams, who has been the originator of the Baths, and who has always taken an active interest in their promotion, called upon Mr. Ed. Morgan, the chairman of the Council, to open the Baths. Mr. Morgan in a very brief, but bright speech, formally declared the Baths open, and that henceforth they would be known as Coronation Baths." Subsequently the competitions took place, prizes being generously given by Mr. L. N. Williams. The first was a swimming race for boys under 16. The first prize, a gold medal, was awarded to John Clifford, Industrial Schools, and the second, a silver medal, to Zechariah Butler. The next contest was a two-length swimming race for young men under 18. The first prize, which was a. gold medal, was won by D. Williams, Gadlys road, and the second, a silver medal, by D. A. Jones, Collier's row, Abernant. The next competition was a four-length swim ming match (open). In the first heat N. G. Shenton came out first, and W. J. Rowlands second. In the final lieat, Shenton was victorious, and, consequently, secured the silver cup that was offered to the winner. The second prize fell to the lot of D. A. Jones, while a consolation prize was given W. J. Rowlands, Llwydcoed. Special prizes were offered for diving. In one class, which was limited to boys under 16, T. Jones, East Avenue, who dived the whole length of the bath, took first prize; while John Clifford came in as a good second. In another diving competition which was open to all comers, T. Jones also secured the prize. A prize for the best bathing costume, a silver medal, was won by Mr. Haydn Thomas, Bute street, The adjudicator was Mr. J. D. Hughes, Boot Hotel. At the end of the contests, the laurels were handed over to each winner by Mr. E. Morgan, who made a few terse remarks in his own inimi- table way. In handing over the cup to Mr. Shenton. who stood shivering on the brink of, the water in his bathing costume, Mr. Morgan expressed his sorrow that the cup did not contain a drop of whisky to infuse a little warmth into its possessor. Not- withstanding the chilly atmosphere and the uninviting aspect of the water, there were a good many swimmers competing, as I well as a goodly crowd of spectators present.
