Mountain Ash Pastor's Retirement. FAREWELL MEETING AND PRESENTATIONS. On Monday evening, at Bethania Cong. Chapel, Mountain Ash, an enthusiastic meeting was held to bid farewell to the Rev. Owen Jones (pastor), Mrs. Jones, and Miss Gaynor Jones, B.A., Tenby County School, on their departure. Mr. Jones is retiring from the ministry, and will reside in Nant Ffrancon, Carnarvon- shire. The Rev. D. Silyn Evans, Aberdare, presided, and the Rev. Ffrwdwen Lewis opened the meeting. After singing by the choir and congre- gation under the conductorship of Mr. T. Glyndwr Richards, accompanied by Miss Rees on the. organ, and an orches- tra under the leadership of Mr. Christo- pher, the chairman, in a brief address, said that Mr. Jones had a place in the history of religion in Wales. If he was to write the history of great religious ser- vices, two would take prominent places in that article. They would be two held by Mr. Jones, one at Blaenrhondda, Ferndale, and another at the Albert Hall, Swansea. A telegram from Mr. D. A. Thomas, M.P., was read, regretting inability to be present. Other letters and telegrams received were from Revs. Lloyd, Crwys; James Jones, Cwmdare; David Phillips, Treharris; J. W. Price, Troedyrhiw; R. E. Williams, Resolven; Bodfan Anwyl, Pontypridd; J. Thomas, Soar, Merthyr; J. D. Jones, Abercanaid; Joseph Jones, B.A., B.D., Brecun; Messrs. G. A. Evans, J.P., J. H. Powell, Danygraig, Aberdare; and J. O. Jenkins, Mountain Ash, chairman of the Free Church Council. Addresses were delivered by the Rev. Isaac Bevan, Miskin, the minister of the first branch church founded after Mr. Jones came to Mountain Ash 19 years ago; Rev. E. Wern Williams, Hirwain, the secretary of the North Glamorgan Cong. Association, and J. Grawys Jones, Ebenezer, Trecynon. Mr. Jenkin Thomas, the treasurer of the church and the chairman of the Presentation Committee, gave a brief history of the connection of Mr. Jones with the church. Mr. Matthew George, the secretary of the church, thereupon read the beauti- ful illuminated address presented to Mr Jones. He also referred to Mr.. Jones's activity. He took the leading part in establishing a Welsh branch of the Rec- habites in Mountain Ash. The address and a purse of gold were handed over by Mr. Philip Isaac and Mr. Benj. Prosser; a dressing bag with silver fittings and bearing a suitable in- scription was presented to Mrs. Jones by Mrs. Harries, one of the oldest lady members of the church; a gold ring set with rubies and diamonds was presented to Miss Jones by Miss S. M. George. Mrs Sarah Morgan (the mother of the Rev. Jenkin Jones, ex-Mayor of Woolwich), then presented Mrs. Jones with a bible and "Y Caniedydd," beautifully bound, and a silver spectacle case was given to Mrs. Jones on behalf of the Women's Prayer Meeting, held in connection, with Bethania. Miss Jones thanked the kind friends who had spoken so kindly of her father and mother and herself. To her there was no place like home, and no church like Bethania, Mountain Ash. The Rev. 0. Jones, who had a rousing reception, said that he had never felt it so difficult to stand up in that pulpit. He had been on the best terms with the church during the whole course of his 20 years' ministry. If he and Mrs. Jones were' spared he would continue to strive towards that high ideal which had always been his aim. He thanked them all for the respect shown to him- self, his wife, and daughter. Airs. Jones, in a most appropriate speech, extended her thanks to the kind donors of the gifts. She exhorted the sisters of the church to remain steadfast in the good work in which they were en- gaged. The Rev. H. A. Davies, late of Cwm- aman, said that he was present at Mr. Jones's ordination at Ystalyfera, and now he was privileged to be present at his farewell meeting. The Rev. J. Bowen Davies, Abercwm- boi, referred to the three great person- alities connected, with Bethania, Moun- tain Ash. They were the Rev. Owen Jones, Mrs. Jones, and Mr. T. Glyndwr Richards, the' renowned choir leader. Addresses were delivered also by the Rev. S. Willaims, Penrhiwceiber; Rev. D. Jeremy Jones, Soar, Mountain Ash; Rev. H. P. Jenkins, Saron, Aberaman; Rev. Ellis Jones, BangOr; Rev. M. D. Jones, C.M., Noddfa, Mountain Ash, and Rev. Lewis Jones, Tynycoed. The latter had been Mr. Jones's companion and fellow student at Bala College, and later at Glasgow University. Mr. Alfred Morgan, Director of Edu- cation, paid a high tribute to both the Rev. and Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Jones had been a most active and impartial mem- ber of the Education Committee. Miss Amy Jones, Porth, daughter of the late Mr. J. W. Jones, J.P., Mountain Ash, paid a most flattering tribute to Mr, Jones's ministry. He had always preached Christ crucified, and no "new theology." Mrs. Jones she considered an ideal minister's wife. Gwyrosydd read some topical verses of his own composition. A male voice party, conducted by Mr. Tom Jones, sang "There is a land." Thanks to the chairman was proposed by the Rev. Owen Jones, and seconded by Mr. John Davies, Miskin, who remarked that he became connected with Bethania as far back as 46 years ago. In addition to the afore-mentioned the following rev. gentlemen were also pres- ent: Revs. W. S. Davies, Llwydcoed; T. Thomas, Godreaman; T. Anthony, H. R. Howells, Ynysboeth; J. Glandwr Wat- kins, Ffrwd, Mountain Ash; R. H. Davies, B.A., Cwmbach. The Rev. Owen Jones was born at Maescaradog, Bethesda, Carnarvonshire. He commenced to preach 49 years ago, the minister of Bethesda at that time being the late Hwfa Mon. He studied at Bala College, and at Glasgow Univer- sity. In 1866 he was ordained to the ministry at Wern, Ystalyfera, whence he removed in four years to Ebenezer. After nine years' successful ministration there he accepted a call to Pwllheli. In 1890 he went to Mountain Ash, where his min- istry at Bethania has been very success- ful. Mrs. Jones has rendered inestimable service to the church, especially among the sisters and in the Sunday School. The mothers' meeting formed in connec- tion with Bethania through her instru- mentality and that of her husband is a very successful one. She has served on the Cottage Hospital Committee, and for 6 years on the Mountain Ash Education Committee. At the annual meeting, of that body last April she was urgedr to accept the chairmanship, but, in view of the impending resignation of her hus- band, and their probable removal from the district, she declined that honour.
