THE WAR. Prisoner of War. +- Pte. Reggio Carr, son of Mrs. Carr, Hawthorne Terrace, Aberdare, is home on leavo after having been a prisoner in Ger- many for some time. He looks well. Pte. Carr is glad to be home again. He is looking forward to having his discharge shortly. He was employed previous to enlisting by Mr. Pardoe, ironmonger. Daviestown War Heroes' Fund.— —The following heroes were pre- sented privately at their own homes by the above Fund while on their Xmas leave, receiving a El noto and a wallet each Pte. T. H. Evans, 43 Wind Street; Pte. G. Tasker, Bute Street; Pte. Jack Bowdidge, Albort Street; Pte. Fred Dodge, Albert Street; Pte. D. Williams, Dumfries Street; Ptes. Pte. J. Miles, Wind Street, returned home on Saturday morning, having been in captivity in Germany for over four years. It is intended to make a good presentation to him. He has suffered much harsh treatment and starvation. Another Released Captive. On Saturday evening, Pte. T. Hodges, Dorset Regt., Cardiff Road, Aber- aman, was presented with -21 Is. by his friends at the Plasterers' Arms, Aberdare. Pte. Hodges was a re- servist when the war commenced, and was called up and drafted to France with the "Old Contempti- bles." Early in the war he was captured by the Germans, and was in captivity for four years and four months. The sufferings he had to enduro wero very great, and it is a wonder that he is alive to tell the tale. Returned Prisoner of War.

Last Saturday evening Pte. Dd. E. Morgan son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Morgan, Fothergill Street, Aber- nant, reached Aberdare from Ger- many, where he had been a prisoner since last March. He was wounded in the great German offensive in France, and waks left on the field with his leg fractured, and was made prisoner. He is now a patient at the Trecynon Military Hospital. Before joining up he was employed as a baker by Mr G. W. Fletcher. His brother, Pte. Willie Morgan, who was a postman, is still in France.

ABERDARE LITERARY SOCIETY The Aberdare Literary and Debat- ing Society commenced its winter session la Ft Tuesday evening. The chair was taken by Mr. Wyndham Thomas. The inaugural address was delivered by Mr. T. Walter Wil- liams, B.Sc., on "The nature of the Comic." The lect-irer was in his ele- ment. He treated his subject his- torically, philosophically an« physi- ologically, with a wealth ef illustra- tions, and kept the audienee in great humour. Don Quixote came under re- view The lecturer ended a highly interesting address by reading a comical dialogue from Mark Twain. Miss Tay opened an animated discus- sion, and was followed by the Chairman, Messrs. E. W. DaTioa, W. J. Williams, E Davies John Daries, S. Welsh, D. Brace, W. ABERDARE WOMAN BURNT, Mrs. A. Woodward, 4 tare Wourf, A herd a re, was severely lourat on Sat- urday. through her apron eoming in contact with the kitchen fire. Her husband oyne to her aid and strove to extinguish the flames. P.S. Bevan who was passing at the time, was at- tracted by the smoke issuing from the house. He* also rendered assist- ance, and was able to stifle the fire. Mrs. Woodward sustained severe burns about the chest, back and arm. She was conveyed to the Aber- dare Hospital, where she is gradually progressing.

ABERCWMBOI HEROES HONOURED. On Thursday last a onceit was held at the Workmen's Hall, Abel' cwmboi, in honour of 16 war heroes, some of whom it re discharged, others- being homo on leave. Mr. E. AV Thomas, the chairman, who is a dis- charged soldier, said that there were present th:tt evening some who were in the retreat of Mons and some were fighting when the armistice was signed. One had been through the South African campaign. There were two who had been prisoners of war in Germany. The hall was crowded. The chairman was supported OIl the platform by Mr. Rees Davies and Mr Henry Williams chairman and sec- retary of the committee respectively- The accompanist was Mr. J. W. Evans. NEW THEATRE, MOUNTAIN ASH. Next week: In Slumberland." A wonderful programme, varied and carefully selected, is presented next Monday, Tuesday and Wednes- day at the Workmen's Theatro. The first item is a double starred photo- play by the Triangle firm, "In Slum- berland," featuring Thelma Salter and;the Triangle Kiddies. It is a real procession of delight, as told in the Emerald Isle. She listened to the old Irish villagers' fairy tales until she half lived in fairy land herself. A dainty little maid has a dream vision and finds her father through its agency, thus saving her mother. The programme also has a • Keystone Komedy and a 2-reel Tatem drama and other beautiful items. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday "Might and the Man will be shown, and the 9th episode of "The American Girl.A pleasing announcement is that Mr W. H. Collier, who has finished "doing his bit," will re-occupy his seat v fiddle under his chin on Monday next.
