——— THE MATE OF THE COUNTESS OF LISBURNE DROWNED. :4. deplorable fatality occurred this (Wednes- day) morning just off the Marine Parade and in sight of the shore, whereby Wm. Thomas, of Prospect-street, and mate of the Countess of Lisburne, lost his life. The steamer was ,tc advertised to make a trip to Bardsey Island, leaving the Terrace-pier at 9.30, and a large number of visitors put off in boats for the purpose of proceeding with her. About ten o'clock Thomas was engaged in the bow of the steamer, in lifting the anchor, and she was about steaming off when, by some means, he fell overboard and was drowned. The news spread throughout the town with great rapidity, and very soon the Terrace and sand were lined with hundreds of people, who were in the greatest state of excitement. Various rumours are afloat as to what efforts were put i.irtli to save the poor fellow—one of which is -.ch:tt he rose to the surface, and remained in. sight for some time, but that nothing was done to render him assistance. Another report h Gates that he went down. and was never after- wards seen. It would be well, however, to suspend judgment, until an inquest is held. Up to the time of going to press the body had not been found. The steamer did not proceed. on her journey, and the passengers were put on shore. In the meantime a number of boats cruised about the spot, and Mr H. IL Davies went out with the intention of diving in search of the body, but he reported that the water was too thick to see any way down. Thomas, who was a most steady and reliable man, has left a wife and several children, and a subscription was at once started on the Ter- race for their benefit. A visitor has suggested to us that if the intending passengers were approached they would probably hand over their fares for the relief of the family thus SOtr. suddenly and so painfully bereaved.
