CONFERENCE AT MERTHYR ON EDUCATION. It transpires that an educational conference will be held at Merthyr on Saturday next, more especially in relation to the voluntary system, and that among those who are ex- pected to attend are Canon Gregory (St. Paul's), Archdeacon de Winton, and Bishop Hedley.

RADNORSHIRE ASSIZES. At the Radnorshire assizes, held at Prestejgn, on Thursday week,before Mr Justice Manisty, Henry Warner and Edward Glyn were tried for a burglary committed last May on the premises of an old man named John Meredith, and were acquitted. Godfrey Morgan pleaded guilty to the charge of obtain- ing five shillings from Sir Herbert Edmund Frankland Lewis, Bart., by false pretences. There was a long list of previous convictions against him, and he was sentenced to five years' penal servitude. Mr Marchant Williams, barriater-at-law, appeared for the prosecution in both cases. This concluded the business of the assize, the. only civil cause entered having been settled. Justice Manisty, in delivering his charge, said that this was the fifth assize town he bad visited in South Wales on this circuit, and it Was 20 days since he left home, while all the business might, he thought, have been done in about four or five days. He did not know whether anybody could suggest a means to prevent such a great waste of time, but it Spemed to him a serious matter to lose 14 days out of 20. And this occurred twice a year. It was a great waste of judicial power, but at the same time, if it was thought desirable that the assizes should be held twice a year in each county, it was not for him to say that it should be altered. It was exceedingly pleasant to find so little crime of a serious character in the principality. He bad only heard two cases of a serious kind, and of civil business there was almost none. He heard a similar account that morning from his brother Field, who was going the North Wales circuit. That state of things went on time after time, and it was no doubt highly creditable to the principality.

THE REPRESENTATION OF CARDIGANSHIRE. LORD LISBURNE A CANDIDATE. The Pall Mall Gazette states that Lord Lisburne meditates an attack, in the Con- servative interest, on Cardiganshire, now re- presented by Mr BJwen Rowlands, Q.C. His lordship is a younar man full of go," and possessed of some Y,12,000 a year. He was born seven-and-twenty years ago, and married Evelyn, second daughter of Mr Edmund Probyn, of Hunth:y Manor, Gloucestshire, and it is interesting to know that, the present peer's father having married Alice d'Alton, Mr Probyn's eldest daughter, the late earl and his successor were not only father and son, but, had the former lived six months, would have been brothers-in-law. The Dowager Lady Lisburne, who is now about to I marry Lord Amherst, is, of course, the present earl's step-mother and sister-in-law.

THE QUEEN'S VISIT TO WALES. Mr R. D. Pryce, Lord-Lieutenant for Merioneth, has received the following com- munication relative to the Queen's visit to Wales :—" Sir,—I am directed by the Secre- tary of State to acquaint you that he lias received an intimation that her Majesty the Queen will leave Osborne on Thursday even ing, so as to arrive at Llandderfel Station at eight o'clock on Friday morning, the 23rd August, whence her Majesty will drive to Mr Robertson's seat at Pale. On Saturday her Majesty will drive to Llangollen. On Thurs- day her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice will lay the foundation stone of a church at Barmouth, and in the evening of that day her Z5 y Majesty will leave Pale foi Balmoral.—I am, sir, your obedient servant, E. LEIGH PEMBERTOJ?."

i 2. J V .\— fJ DRUNKEN JURYMEN.. 'a. On Saturday afternoon Mr A. Braxton Hicks went to the Star and Garter, Church- road, Battersea, for the put pose of holding an inquiry into the death of William Harries, aged 78 years, a carpenter, who had died at 34, Castle-street, Battersea. Not only did the jury put in an appearance half an hour after the time mentioned on their summonses, but several of them were the worse for drink. The coroner merely took evidence of identi- fication so as to enable him to issue his order for the burial of the body, and then peremp- torily adjourned the inquest, remarking that he was compelled to adopt that course because the number of gentlemen who were sober was not sufficient to proceed with case. He added that it was disgraceful that gentlemen should come in such a state to hold a serious inquiry involving important issues. One or two of the sober jurors strongly condemned the con- duct of the offenders. ?

FUNERAL OF THE FATHER OF THE BRITISH ARMY. General Breton (father of ilie BrifclsE'army)," who died at 48, Rutland-gate, London, on Monday last, at the age of 91, was buried at Southsea on Saturday without military honours, he being on the retired list. General Breton's last appointment was as Lieutenant- Governor of Portsmouth, which post he held from 1856 to 1861, and was retired under the age clause in 1877. His wish was that he Z5 should be buried where he last commanded.

AN INTERESTING LETTER. The following letter, received by a correspon- dent, will be of interest to many of our readers at this season of the year, when so many are flitting here and there for change of air. and to recruit their health, some at the Wells, others at the different watering places, and others as tourists, flitting from place to place to enjoy their holidays Dear Friend, Here am I at last, released from my daily cares and worry, at our favourite watering place, where I arrived three days ago, and where I intend spending my summer holidays. I have been overworked, and felt the need of rest and a change of air. When I arrived here I acted upon your suggestion, and went at once to consult Dr who is reputed the best physician in this part of the country. You have overworked yourself,' sai-I he, many do so, some bodily, and others mentally. The mother-with the worry and cares of household duties; the father, who, perhaps, is a collier, miner, metal worker, mill hand, labourer, by over exertion, or working for too many hours in the day; the children, many of them by over-pressure at school the student, by too close application to his studies; as well as the merchant and clerk at their desks, all are overworked, and the result ii similar in all cases. You need three things. (1) Perfect rest from your usual cares. (2). A change of air and scenery, and (3). A course of some good tonic medicine.' I asked him to give me a prescription to obtain what he deemed would be most beneficial to me, when he reptied, r know of nothing that will do y011 more good than a cours" of G trilym E,rar.s' Quinine Bitters.' I paid him his usual consul- tation fee, and went direct to the chemist to obtain a bottle of Quinine Bitters, but he kept none in stock. You know that visitors at this place soon get on friendly terms with each other, and during the day I learned from several persons that they take the Quinine Bitters as a 'pick-me-up' during their holidays, and bring a couple of bottles with tbem. When returning to my lodgings this evening, I met the chemist, who told me be had received several applications for Quinine Bitters after I had been there seeking it, and that he had sent for a supply of both sizes—2s 9d and 4s 6d, so that, should I require it again, I might depend upon being supplied at his shop, as he intended to keep it always in stock henceforth. I thanked him for the information, and hurried on to scribble you a few lines by this post. The weather here is delightful, and plenty of merry company. DISASTROUS FLOODS IN AUSTRIA HUNGARY. HUNDREDS OF LIVES LOST. A disastrous cyclone, such as has not been experienced even in this Empire for very many years, has been raging over Southern Hungary, Transylvania, and Bukovina. The destruction of property it has caused is enor- mous, and there is, unhappily, only too much reason to fear that when the calculation comes to be made, hundreds of lives will be found to have been lost. The area of disturbance covers several thousand square miles, and from all sides the most heartrending accounts are being received of the desolation the storm has caused. From the Danube, the Theiss, and other rivers numberless corpses of men, women, and children, and dead cattle have been recovered or washed up on to the banks, while a large number of animals have been killed by hailstones as large as hens' eggs, ,0 others, .¡gam, have been struck dead by lightning. The vast majority of the deaths of people, however, were caused by the unfor- tunates being carried away by floods or killed by the falling in. of their houses. Of these there have 0 been an enormous number destroyed, while several churches, and among them the Roman Catholic and Greek churches at Mokes, have been laid in ruins. Of 24 mills on the Danube only three remain stand- itlx. The others have entirely disappeared, and so, too, have nearly all those on the Theiss. While a ferry boat crowded with people and cattle was crossing the Danube near Pest, it was blown right on to a passing 0 steamer and completely wrecked, nearly all of those on board being drowned. At Szegedin, which it will be remembered was nearly destroyed by flood in 1879, a circus was swept clean away, and at Nyirbotar, in the govern- ment of Grosswardein, a large number of houses and the church were struck by light- ning and burned down, several people perish- ing in the iianjes. These, however, ate only a few incidents in a long catalogue of disasters. rm • •The vines and fruit and wheat crops have of course suffered severely, being in many dis- tricts wholly destroyed.

SUNDAY TRAVELLING AT GLASGOW. At the half-yearly meeting of the Glasgow Tramway Company on Monday, a dividend of S}{ per cent, was declared. A motion for the discontinuance of Sunday cars was, after a long discussion, lost by a large majority. The proxies for Sunday cars represented stock for X17,000, whilst those against only amounted to £ 3,200. The chairman said it was not compulsory that their men should work on Sunday. The company treated their men fairly in wages and hours.

THE NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD. The inaugural address of the Cymmrodorion n section of the Brecon Eisteddvod will be delivered by the Very Rev. the Dean of St. Asaph. The other two meetings will be devoted to the discussion of the question of Welsh spelling reform and the publication of Welsh historical records. The proclamation of the Bangor Eisteddfod of 1890 will take place on Bank Holiday. The list of subjects, which will be ready by that date, is said to show a considerable amount of originality in selection. The National Eisteddfod intends to offer a bonus of L-50 for the best work show- ig original research in any branch of Welsh literature,

WELSH SOLDIERS IN INDIA. The report of the Army Medical Depart- ment for 1887, just issued, shows that among the many and various corps included in the Madras command of the Indian army, which includes Burmah, the healthiest corps was the 1st Cheshire, stationed at Rangoon. The corps had only lately come into the country, but in any case its annual admission to hos- pital ratio, 814-8 per 1,000, is conspicuously low, especially compared with that of the South Wales Borderers, stationed only a little higher up at Thayetmoo and Tounghoo. The latter's ratio was almost exactly double, being 1612-4.

THE NEW TESTAMENT FOR THE SHAH. When the Shah visited England in 1873 he Was presented with a handsome copy of the Bible in Persian by the British and Foreign Bible Society, and no fewer than eighty-six Persian New Testaments were distributed among the members of his suite. The society has resolved on the present occasion to present his Imperial Majesty with a tastefully bound copy of the Revised Persian New Testament. Not, be it noted, a Persian edition of the "Revised New Testament," for it is the singular fate ot that monument of unappre- ciated labour to be considered thus far un- worthy of translation for missionary purposes.
