LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD INQUIRY. ON Tuesday, Mr. F. T. Bircham, Local Govern- ment Board Inspector, held an Inquiry at the Board Room of the Guardians, into an applica- tion of the Merioneth County Council for the dis- mainic-g of Pen-y-bryn and Ddol roads The Main Roads Committee were represented by the Hon. C. H. Wynn, Rflg (Chairman of the Com- mittee); Messrs. Thomas Jones, Brynmelyn Evan Jones, Bala; and J. Morris Jones (County Surveyor), in support of the application. The application was opposed by Mr. L Lloyd John (on behalf of the Edeyrnion Rural District Council, and Corwen Parish Council); Mr. T. Hughes (Clerk to the Edeyrnion Rural District Council); Mr. E. Edwards (Surveyor). And amongst others, the following ratepayers:- Messrs, 0. Lloyd, W. Foulkes Jones, Dr. Walker, J. Hughes, Dr. Jones, R. R. Roberts, Godfrey Parry, John Williams, H. Rees, R. H. Morris, Dr. White, H. Hughes, Evan Davies, J. 0. Pugh, and Samuel Jones, Corwen Thomas Owen, Llangar; E. Jarrett, L'andrillo; E. O. V. Lloyd; Parry, Tanllan and Rev. Rees Jone, Llansantffraid. The Hon. C. H. Wynn stated, that on account of the increasing expenditure on the main roads, the County Council were desirous of doing away jth all roads which were not strictly main roads, ,ud two of such existed in tbe parish of Corwen; viz.: Pen-y bryn and Ddol roads. As the largest ratepayer in the parish, he was very much interes- ted in the mELttpr; but considering everything, he felt conscientiously bound to support the application. The County Surveyor admitted that bot h, roads were in ariiiiierable state, and that he neg'ected putting much expense on them, as he wng not sure whether they Were main roads or not. Mr. Bircham painted out that it was a great mistake to let the roads go into such deplorable state. The County Council admitted that they were main roads find the least they could do was, to put them in good repair. The evidence respecting Pen y-hryn Main Road tended to show that it was now mostly used for local traffic; and that the road running ir, and through the town of Corwen, a»d maintained by the County Council, was, strictly speaking, the main road. As regards Ddol Road, Mr. Wynn said it «,vns principally used by residents in. or near Corwen and that if it was only for the footbridge recently erected over the Dee, it would be much lessused. The road was too narrow as a carriage way, and very frequently under water. On the other side, Mr. John, and several farmers, brought strong arguments in proof that the read was frequently used by residents flom Gwyddelwern, Bryneglwys, Llansantffraid, &c/ j Mr. Lloyd, Rhagatt, protested agaiDSt the pre- judicial way the County Council was represented at the inquiry. Many farmers were prevented from attending the inquiry on account of Ruthin fair being held that day. That road was the most convenient for many large districts to reach the town of Corwen. He himself saved three miles by going to Corwen that way. The only draw- bank was the want of a bridge. A bridge had been talked of for half a century but now, they were nearer to having one than ever before. He would, be prepared to subscribe a substantial sum to- wards the expenses. Mr., R. R. Roberts asked that the decision of the Local Government Board misbt be deferred, to enable them to approach the County Council with a view to obtaining a contribution towards the erectipu of a bridge. At the conclusion of the inquiry, Mr. Bircham accompanied the County and District Surveyor to inspect the roads.
