There was a large audience at the Gwyn Hall, Neath, on Thursday, when the concert season opened, Mr. Edgar Lewis (Britonferry) being the organiser, accompanist, and promoter. The foun- elation of the concert was laid by the Neath Orpheus Male Voice Choir, assis- ted by Miss Nellie Brinkworth,. The artistes were Mr. Lionel Falkman, Mr. Glanville Davies, Mr. Tom Bonnell, Madame Be<96ie Morris, Mies L. Wil- liams, and Mr. Edgar Lewis. The pro- ceeds were in aid of the Soldiers' Com- forts Fund and the Neath ,and District War Hospital. Councillor John Morris, Neath, is re- ported to be progressing favourably at a Swansea Nursing Home after having undergone an operation. Following up their receat success at Swansea, the Britonferry Choral Society, under the conductorship of Mr. Evnn Morris, gained another victory at Neath Eisteddfod, obtaining the maximum points with a magnificent rendition of 0 Snatch Me Swift." J Tho adjourned series 01 Home Office summonses against the management of the Main Colliery Co., Skewen, occupied the attention fo the Neath county justices on Friday. There were 71 summonses for alleged preach M of the Coal Mines Act, 48 of which were disposed of at the last court. Air. Edward Powell prosecuted, and Mr. Kenshole appeared for the defen- dant company, whilst Mr. H. L. Porcher < Meters* JdoiEraa. PJMCQ and Nicholas), held a watching brief for the Miners' Federation. In the interim, Mr. Powell, acting upon the instruction of the Bench, amended the summonses tovcovcr periods when the pits were not idle. A number of workmen gavo evidence in support of the prosecutions, all alleging that it was in consequence of a shortage of timber that the men made representa- tion of the management for props to be sent down without result, and the men, warned by the firemen not to work in danger, held a pit-head meeting, and re- fused to go down. J. Owen and Walden, H.M. inspectors of mines, spoke to visiting the districts and finding a general shortage of timber. The Bench retired, and the Chairman (Col. J. Edwards Vaughan) announced that the magistrates had decided to con- vict. In the 24 summonses against Mr. Price, and the similar number against Mr. Westmacott under Section 51. a fine of Fl would be imposed in each case; and in the two summonses heard under Section 75 a penalty of £ 10 in each case would be imposed, with witness' expenses and advocate's fee. Mr. Kenshole, on behalf of Mr. Vaughan Price, admitted the facts of a subsequent prosecution for failing to notify the appointment of a temporary manager during Mr. Westmacott's ten, days' absence. A fine of .2 and costs was imposed, and the remaining sum- monses were adjourned- The total amount of the fines was £ 70. j

t WELSH SHIPYARDS. Representatives of the Admiralty* "who are visiting South Wales with reference to the proposed new Government e;hip- yards, were at Port Talbot on Tuesday, when they met Mr. Edward Lowther, gen- eral manager of the Port Talbot Bailway and Docks Co., and representatives of Aberavon and Margam Councils, who laid before them the claims of Port Talbot. supporting these with plans of euggeeed sites for the shipyard. The Admiralty representatives were afterwards hown over the docks and the suggested sites.

I BRITONFERRY COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the.Britonferry Council met on Thursday evening, Conn oil lor Gwyn Davies, J.P., presiding. It was decided that a charge of 2s. 6d. be made for each allotment let by the Council. A letter was read from Mr. Llewellyn, secretary of the Municipal Employes' Association. asking the Council to agree to a flat rate of 15s. per week war bonnis for all employes of the Council, and after an explanation of the matter from the Chairman, the request wns acceded to. Mr. James Revll. Clerk to the Council, was appointed executive officer for the town under the Food Controller at a salary of £ 200 per annum inclusive of any help he may require. The question off shipbuilding yards for Soutb. Wales was brought, forward, and the Chairman had bean instructed to write the Neath Har- bour Commissioners, wfco had already been moving in the matter with regard to the sites available at the entrance to the port, ste.ting that the Council would be pleased to support them in the matter. It WAS decided that the Chairman and Clerk be appointed to try and meet the Government representatives who were expected at Swansea early next montibt Mr. John Morris was reappointed as the Council's representative on the County Governors, of the University of South ¡ Wales and Monmouthshire.

SKEWEN MEDALLIST I Warmly Praised by Sir W. I James Thomas. t Sir William James Thomas had an on- thusiastic reception at Skewen on Monday evening, Then he attended a meeting to personally present Mr. David Jamee, Skewen, the winner of the gold medal which he offered for competition among mining students in connection with the I Glamorgan County Council. Councillor T. W. Davies presided, and was supported by Sir William, Aid. J. Jordan, J.F., Mr. Abraham H. Thomas, Inspector F. E Rees, and Mr. J. Evans. Sir William was introduced by the chairman as one of the most noble and beloved sons of young Walee. His philan- thropy in connection with Netley Hospi- ? tai, the Cardiff Hospital, and that great, «ud grand institution, the Red Cross j Society, had endeared him to all Welsh- men, and like Williams, Pantycelyn, he j was erecting his memorial during his life- tSnie. (Applause.) Presenting the gold medal to Mr. David James, Sir William said he was exceed- ingly pleased to think that a Welshman and Skewen boy had won the two gold medals. I understand," continued Sir William. that you won the gold medal for survey two years ago, and now you have won the mining medal. I heartily congratulate you." (Applause.) ) Should any colliery-owner require a practical manager, added Sir William, he could not do better than get Mr. David James. He hoped he would bo spared for many years to do good work in the mining v/orld. Out of the ten medals distributed  for mining and surveying three had been ) tcoured by Skewen boys.
