FURNITURE TRADE II LOCK-OUT, The Employers' Statement. The National Tederation of Furniture Manufacturers having, with the utmost reluctance and ouly after prolonged nt tempts to avoid it. found themselves com- peJIed to effect a national lock-out of those of their employes who belong to the prin- cipal unions, consider it most desirable that both the public (who are directly affected as consnmefs) and the rank and file of the workpeople should be made ac- quainted with the facts of the case. It is, therefore, proposed to publish these in the. form of a short, series of pnid advertisements, of which this is the first. The* oalient facts are;— (1) lhat over and over agrain when the Joint Conciliation Board set up by the furniture Trades Joint Industrial Whitley'") Council failed, to agree, tho nl(,Illbers, offers of-an indepen- dent chairman were refuser! hy those acting on the operatives' behalf. (2) That. an offer by the e-mployevs of a thoroughly representative Jsipt National Conference,'to be summoned. • within 7 days, to consider all matters in dispute, was rendered abortive by the refusal of the operatives who were thpn on strike in Manchester nnd East Lan- cashire, to eoanply with the employers' only other condition, viz., that those men -L, V i z.. 333en should resume work pending the deci- sion of the Conference; the employers offering to make any advance in wages thereat agreed upon retrospective from tho date of their return to work. (3) The present average rate of wages, I which is from Is. 6d. to Is. lOkl per hour, on the average more than double the pre-war rates, and the employers. while ready for full discussipn and anxious at all tiroes to treat their em- ployes justly, feel that a point has V'on reached when it. is imperative for both sides to examine the whole situation to- gether before further demands are made or acceded to. if the Furniture Trade (both home and export) is not to be made a commercial impossibility.
