LIGHT AND SHADE. !
LIGHT AND SHADE. Every new trial brings in its train strength to meet it. The demeanour of the public during the last few I davs is proof of this. The' danger is not minimised; the gravity is not I glossed over. There is abroad an indefinable but iturdily 'tritish atmosphere of trust. The Allies are enduring in an in- tensified form the perils of '1914. The enemy has sècuredfor the time being-the initiative in the West; he has m&de a rapid ad- vance; his claims of prisoners and booty are certainly not, meagre; the whoid out4ook is anxious and grave. The black shadows thrown by these stern realities are overcasting the nation. It is well that we should face the truths as they stand. Soit words win no victories, fortify ao zeal, and maintain uo morale. But the shadows in the heavens are sliced by welcome patches of light. Let us cast our e, es upon them and keep them there f There can be uo doubt that the enemy, at the outset, intended to split the French Army, and precipitate Buch a situation as would oompel Fooh to use up his re- serves. The result is definitely that--the French Army is n^t divided into two, and Foch's re- serves are not used up.. Truly, a cheering fact! We must beware of judging events in France by last year's standard s and methods. A degree of mobility, hitherto totally unexpected by usk has now entered into the battle calculations. The. into the -bottl6 e,, criteria of French warfare, pure and simple hold good no longer. But," shouts he oi the gloomy hea-rt, we are doing nothing but j waiting—waiting. For the im- mediate present, it is Foch's fyrlm purpose to wait. Beirtember, Ludect- dora is trying to rattle the French- man, to divert his reserves to a false point by strategic eamoutfage, and then to strike hard and remorse- j lessly elsewhere. The mobility which is the new element We have to watch, and ada.pt to our advant- agê" triar-k-f4 this course wit-h ths stairtp of strong probability—even certainty—if, if-tbe (renefalissifrio allowed his plans to be dictated t'y the will of the German Genera] Staff. But Foch is .mx <Ad a master of the dariirg; ,swift and un- c onvalit loll ti-I in lais solution of crises. I It is feasible that Ludendorft may attempt to thrust, westward from I Soisscns,- having aH his objective a 111 arch on Paris. So we are by no 1 means out of the wood. Perhaps we are only jusM; entering it. Further trials lie ahead. We believe Fojh is prepared for these eventuali- ties. Fjtents will soon show. We must continue to expect: hard knocks, not because the Germans have sufficient power to deliver them with comparative im- punity, or because our weakness is so accentuated as to make his task a straightforward one of successful btonewalling, but for a reason that is pregnant with seriousness to the German command. The Hun is fighting with time. He knows that the march of the days is bringing us reinforcements, fresh and strong, from a new quarter, an inexhaus- tible quarter. He is equally aware that, for him and his deluded popu lati-on there are not two Russias. On our horizon big ships loom up. bringing the Americans—omens of great promise; fighting material of great strength. Our plain duty is to leave Foch to his reserves, the counter-mea- sures to those who know how to plan and execute them. The nation is solidly bÐhíhd the men who are braving the ordeal- Our prayers arc with the boys, our minds are ùÜ the swaying battle, and in that splendid community of noble in- terests—our hearts 0/ determined to make to-morrow secure whatever it cost to-day—the Empire is as one, inflamed by one mighty desire to crush this gigantic horror. The Americans are arriving to help us with llll possible speed, The offen- sive has greatly quickened their efforts. They appreciate that. they themselves are the vital factor. Without stint or limit "-in the words of their Pi,estllont-t-licy are coming over. NN-itli the same whole- heartednese they are working, across the Pónd, for that victory which their intervention proved they, with us, recognised to be the paramount necessity for the safe future of the nations, sick of tRe blind tragedy of this blood-bath. Many thousands of American soldiers will be in the trenches this summer. The mili- tary lender in whose hands we | have placed the destinies of all the Allied armies is an adept st "h«!dirll1 on"—"until the time I com^s.' Huge battles tleéd hufi |faifh. We must take the long view in such eftcoua+ers. If the Ger- mans cannot oyerpAwer us this sumtheir L\¡;t c hr-.nce has gone.
