One who was present with Major Watts Morgan before Cambrai, when he won his D.S.O. says:— "The Germans had come down to the valley towards us, but before they got far our boys were upon them, killing thousands. The behaviour of the Guardp during the memorable day was such that ought to make every Britisher proud. They simply walked into the Germans, who appeared to melt away. The- Guards walked ten yards, fired 15 quick volleys, another ten yards' walk and another 15 volleys and so on, at the same time be- i-n g under a withering machine-gun fire. It was the grandest sight of my life. Thei I morale of the Guards simply frightened I the Boches, who ran away." I Mr. Emunds, sanitary inspector re- ported to the Pontardawe Council on Thursday the case of a soldier working in I substitution employment on a farm known as Penyralltwen, Pontardawe, and owned by Mr. Llewelyn B. Williams. Upon I visiting the farm on January 1st the in- spector stated that he found the man was I sleeping in a. hayloft over the stables. The place was quite unfit for human habita- tion. His kit-bag and overcoat were damp. The bed was composed of a broken straw mattress, on which was a feather- bed. The bed clothes consisted of a car- riage rug and some clothing, and these were in a dirty condition. The soldier said he was at present under medical treatment suffering from rheumatism. He also said 119 was a married man with two | j children, and lived at Burry Port before enlisting. The members of the Council said;it was a .scasdalcaa .shame that tho man should 1 have to put np with such conditions. Davies, shops inspector, at the Police Court to-day for "offering to sell buttern;t a price exceeding the maximum, and also for selling butter at a price exceeding the maximum, -while Gwynne Thomas, manager, and Hilda M. Davies were sziiiiial-ined for aiding and abetting. Mr. H. W. Spowart, the executive cia- cor to the local Food Control Committee, appeared for the prosecution," and Mr. Robinson, London, defended. The case was heard, at a previous Court when the Bench reserved their de- cision. The Presiding Magistrate (Mr. R. H. li if ter ver Sampson) The Bench after very Careful consideration, by a majority, have de- cided to convict, and they indict fines of £20 in ead: ü: t112 two cases against the Company and tl each against the mana- ger and the assistant. I should add that the evidence to which objection was taken has not weighed with us in arriving at a decision. Mr. Spowart- asked for a special order as to costs in the five cases. The Bench allowed £ 10 costs. Mr. llobinson said he was instructed to ask the Bench to state a case for the High Court. 'The Bench agreed to this course. The magistrates who heard the were Messrs. H. Sampson, -no W. Evans, and D. Arnold.
