I Z:. -' .* Vegetarianism…
I Z:. Vegetarianism 1 b I To the Editor cf the "Star." :3ir, r J In the present crisis as to shortage of food, I believe the above will be just the subjcct of the moment. i It is said that one acre of land would j feed a family of live of vegetarians. And there are xorty-xive million in the United Kingdom, and assuming five for each j family——therefore, we would have nine million families. Hence nine million acres of land would be necessary to maintain 1' Th the present population. T h ere are 74 million acres of land in the T mtcd King- ciomV—consequently merely one-eighth oi the land would be needtd. in the words of Goldsmith—"When every rood of land maintain its man." Fresh vegetables including fruit, con- tain vitay-,iii,es-c--rtain qualities proved hy experience and investigation, to be essential to life. The word "vitamines," ] now used by scientists and doctors, is af- patently as yet impossible to define. So one can tell wha.t the principle of life is. But this one thing is certain, that "vita- j mines" contain what is absolutely neces- sary to life. The less we eat, the better for man- kind in,genera], the better perhaps, also, | i&r mankind in particular. But if we Ice-e in quantity, ,we must be careful to gam in quality ur.d to eat what will give us the r{), nour i s hment. Our aim should .l" ..J. l' .,i.. i be minimum of amount consumed, to- i value. There is a deeply-rooted general convis- ,on that without meat, tea, bread, and sugar, man caur.ct live. But to those who beh ave in vegetarian principles, it is knswn by actual experience that the ab- sence of "these four articles of diet need not disturb or even affect our health, ex- cept for the better. For all the nourish- ment that is found in them is contained in the fresh fruit and herbs so abundantly bestowed upon us by nature. The State that runs our Armies, our Navies, our workhouses, and prisons, alone has the power of making experiments on different wholesome diets on a large scale. Yet, thus far, the State has left this investi- gation severely alone. Vegetarianism quickens sympathy with I. all animals—even that curious animal, man—and it has its higher side as well as its dietic side. Vegetarianism was the diet of the first Eden—the fruits and the herbs—"to you it shall be for meat." In the advance of vegetarianism we see not »a mere culinary change, but progress in health, in peace, in plenty, in kindly feeling. We see in it an aid to national prosperity and to international peace. It is a part of the working of that spirit of Jove which is not hemmed in by city walla or by the bulwarks of the nations; which knows no distinction of race or colour, and has compassion on all innocent creatures on whom the gift of life has been bestowed. • Yours in pcace, Trim sarin. 7pil, T. E. DA YIFS. 1st January, 1918..
