FORMATION OF TONTINE SOCIETY. At a well atttended meeting held at the Council Chamber on Wednesday night, it was unanimously agreed to form a Tontine Society, to be called the Prestatyn and District Tontine Society. The following officers were appointed :— President, Mr I. Thompson; Vice-President. Mr T. H. Jones Trustees, Mr J. M. Hughes. Mr Wm. Jones, Mr J. T. Burrows Com- mittee, Mr 0. Proflit, Mr A. L. Jones, Mr H. B. Jones, Mr It. Ewart Owen Secretary, Mr G. 0. Williams Treasurer, Mr David Hughes. A set of rules were considered and adopted. The first pay-night will be Monday, January 11th. A general meeting will be held in a room over Mr Ewart Owen's shop, Bradford Buildings, High Street, on Monday next, Jauuary 4th, at 8-30 p.m. All persons desirous of joining the Society should endeavour 0 to be present. Nominations will be received. There is every prospect of a strong society being formed.

Coronation Hall. The Jubilee of the Coronation Hall is to be celebrated by a grand supper, generously given by Mr Richard Lewis, this (Thursday) evening. The last instalment of the purchase money of the hall will be paid, and the occa- sion is to be honoured as stated. Several Parish Councillors, past and present, and many others, have been invited to attend, and particulars of the gathering will appear next week.

Distribution of Prizes. The school children of the Church School, before commencing their Christmas holidays, were awarded prizes on Wednesday last week, for good attendance, etc., during the year.

Con gratulations to Mr Lewis H ugbes (Brynian) on the success he has achieved in securing the first prize of £1, out of five competitors, at the Rhyl Boxing Day Eisteddfod, for the best essay on The relation of the Bible with regard to social questions." The work was highly commended.

Fire! Late on Wednesday night, about 12 o'clock, Mr John Owen, Wern House, noticed a big blaze of fire close to the residence of Mr Chits. Thomas. He gave the alarm, and Mr Thomas found a wooden shed had taken fire, also a pigsty in which were two pigs. The latter were so badly burnt that they were ordered to be immediately slaughtered. It was fortunate that Mr Owen was able to give the alarm in time and so avoid the spreading of the flames, or else considerable damage would have been done. -or

COMPETITIVE MEETING AT DYSERTH. List of the Prize-Winners. The Welsh Wesleyans held their annual tea party on Christmas Day, and the function proved a success. A large number partook of the refreshments, which were very nicely prepared. The following ladies were appoin- ted as tea-makers: Miss Jones (Prengwyn), Mrs Sarah Hughes (Rosmari), Mrs A. Williams (Hiraddug terrace), Miss E. A. Williams (Bryngoleu), and Miss M. A. Jones (Bryn terrace), assisted by the following young ladies Misses S. Williams, J. Williams, D. Lewis, N. Lea, and K. Hayes. Also the following had the charge of pre- paring the delicacies Mrs S. Lea, Mrs Ann Williams (Quarry), Mrs Edwin Roberts, Mrs M. Roberts, and Mrs A. Jones (Carreg Heilin). Great praise is attributed to them for the splendid service they rendered to the satisfaction of all. In the evening a competitive meeting was held, the place being crowded to its utmost, and owing to the lack of accommodation a great number had to remain outside. The proceedings were presided over by Inspector John Jones, Rhyl. The adjudicators were: Singing, Mr T. Amos Jones, R.A.M., Rhyl recitations, Rev T. 0. Jones (Tryfan), Rhyl. The various items for competition did not attract as many entries as in the past, and the quality of the singing also was not as good as might be expected. The list of prize- winners are appended :—Singing under 14 for girls 1, Maggie Evans 2, Jane Cunnah. For boys under 14 1, Reggie Lewis 2, Howell Lee. Singing for male voice Mr William Jones, Bryn. Singing for female voice: 1, Miss M. E. Cunnah; 2, Miss Maggie Evans. For the best party of eight voices (only one entered) Mr Edward Williams and party. Male Voice Choir Competition, "The Crusaders" (two en- tered) Hiraddug and Heilin Male Voice Choirs 1, Heilin Choir, under the conductor- ship of Mr T. Ernest Hughes, Bryn. Recitations for Adults 1, Mr T. J. Hughes. The following contributed to the success of the meeting The Children's Choir, under the conductorship of Mr Richard Williams also Miss Gwladys Thomas, Mr Alfred Jones and Mr William Jones. The accompanist was Miss Sillers, Dyserth. A very successful meeting was terminated after the usual vote of thanks to all for their services, which was proposed by Mr Isaac Hughes, seconded by Mr Robert Williams. Clwyd Villa.

Parish Church. The services were well-attended on Christ- mas Day. The church was tastefully decorated by the following ladies :—Altar, Mrs Griffith and Miss Wolverson stalls, Miss Lean and Miss Mellor pulpit, Miss Clarke font, The Misses Minton. The special feature of the Welsh service in the evening was carol singing by the choir, and also by Mr Robert Williams, Talargoch. The preacher in English next Sunday 0 morning will be the Rev Mervin Parry Jones, who, up to last month, worked in a large parish in the diocese of Hereford. A special service will be held next Sunday afternoon at 2-30. The choir will be assis- ted by a small orchestra from Rhyl and Pres- tatyn, and the subject of the Vicar's address will be "Psychology." We understand that this psychological service is arranged by the Vicar at the request of certain parishioners.

Psychological Sunday. In accordance with a few circulars which have already been circulated, this movement will be formally inaugurated at the Meliden Parish Church next Sunday at 2-30 p.m., by a service of song and instrumental music, and a short address will be given by the Vicar in explanation of the necessity or expediency of the movement. The Vicars of Prestatyn and Dyserth, and the Rev. Dr. Townsend have each been asked to give a similar address in their respective churches. All friends are invited to attend.

Well Done, Ffynnongroew. During the Christmas holidays competitors from this district have brought home a fair share of the awards from various eisteddfodau. At Rhyl on Boxing Day, in the mixed choir contest, Ffynnongroew Choir (under the leadership of Mr Lloyd) carried off first prize for their rendering of "Rest, soldier rest." In the chief choral contest for male voices, Ffynnongroew choir (led by Mr J. Spencer) also gave a good account of them- selves, being awarded second prize out of five entries, Penmaeumawr securing the first prize. At the same meeting Mr J. P. Jones, Ffynnongroew, carried off the first prize for a Welsh recitation. At Chester eisteddfod on the same day, Mr R. 0. Williams won the first prize for his rendering of a baritone solo.

Satisfactory. Contributors to Dr Lloyd Owen's testi- monial will be glad to know that the manner of its production is considered satisfactory. Dr Owen writes to us as follows Allow me to congratulate you on the truly magni- ficent way the Address was got up. It has been warmly admired by all my friends. The design, colouring, and illumination are all very beautiful, and it occupies at present the most honourable position in our new residence."

Miners and J.P s. At a recent meeting of the Miners' Federation held at Mold, an animated discus- sion took place upon the position of the Federation in the country, and suggestions were made to assert its representation upon the various legislative bodies in the county. It was pointed out by local members that they had lost a Justice of the Peace by the death of the late Mr W. Bulcock, whereupon Mr David Jones (secretary to the Point of Ayr Lodge) was nominated as a suitable candidate to be submitted to the Lord Chancellor for the honour of J.P. Two other nominees for other parts of the County are also to be recommended.

Newmarket. Social. The above was held in Wynne's Schools Christmas evening, in connection with the Debating Society, and passed off very success- fully, there being a good number of members present. The following ladies presided at the tables Miss K. Hughes, Miss S. J. Roberts. and Mrs Jones (Brynteg), assisted by Misses A. Parry, B. Jones (Gwaanysgor), J. A. Williams (Llanasa), and A. Wynne (Trelogan). The room was prettily decorated with ever- greens and bunting by Misses V. E. Jones. H. Banning Roberts, and Mr C. V. H. Jones. The musical portion of the evening was con- ducted by Mr W. Roberts, and was commen- ced with a Welsh Quartette, conducted by Mr J. 0. Roberts, Gwaenysgor. The following singers also took part in the programme: Misses Violet E. Jones, H. Banning Roberts, Winnie Morris, Messrs W. Vickers, Harry Evans, J. E. Jones and R J. Jones, who were encored several times. Miss Edith L. Roberts and Mr C. V. H. Jones were the accompanists.- W.K.B.

Gronant. Won First Prize. The children's choir carried off the first prize at the Rhyl Boxing Day Eisteddfod. On this occasion there were no lesa than eight entries, but Gronant beat all comers in their rendering of Don't forget the old Jolks," under the leadership of Mr W. Humphreys. The villagers should be proud of thi.) choir and its leader.

Jan. 1st.—Lecture on "John Jones, Talsarn," at the C.M. Chapel, at 7 p.m.

Acceptable Gift. Sir Pyers and Lady Mostyn, of Talacre Hall, very kindly remembered the poor by distributing coal, which was most acceptable this time of the year.

Shared the Prize. Mr Alun Nicholson aud his juvenile choir took half the prize at Prestatyn on Christmas Day. The choir did well considering the short term they had for practising.

Stopped Work. On account of the bad weather the work- men at Talacre and Gwespyr stone quarry have been stopped. ♦

PRESENT AND PAST. The chapel-of-case which is now being erected is nearing completion, and the spiritual needs of Churchmen who have hitherto had to walk to Llanasa will be greatly facilitated by the erection of a place of worship in the immediate vicinity of their dwellings, and much good must develop in the neighbourhood by the forethought of the promoters of the scheme. It is interesting to note that at the time of the Norman Conquest, there were but seven churches in Flintshire, one of which is des- cribed as Dansfrond Calston and Wesbie. Two of these names are still shown in Kelston and Gwespyr, so that the Dansfrond name is probably now called Llanasa. In a manuscript now lying in the public library at Cambridge, and which formerly belonged to the Right Rev. John Moore, Bishop of Ely, a valuation was made of the temporalities in the eighteenth year of Edward the first (which was A.D. 1291), and gives Llanassaph as being worth 12 marks. It will thus be seen that only two hundred years had elapsed from the Norman grand survey until the date of the above manuscript. The chapel of ease at Gwespyr, situate on the field now called Maes-y-capel, was therefore in full use and repair when the Normans were in posses- sion of the county, though the neighbouring church Wenescol (Gwaenysgor) was stated to be in ruins. Gwespyr church was dedicated to St. Beuno, who in the legends is said to have restored the head of St. Winifred to its place, howbeit there is hardly a vestige of the chapel now, beyond the top of one of the windows, which has been fixed over a cottage window at a bend in the road, and in a chimney on the opposite side of the road is to be seen a piece of tombstone which had been erected to a clergyman. These cottages are situated just below the old site of the church, and I have no doubt that if the proper authorities were consulted they would be restored to the safe keeping of the present builders of the new chapel-of-ease. It was interesting to note that at the dawn of the great Reforma- tion, Gwespyr church was thrown open, as it were, for the preaching of those tenets, which culminated in a manner so well known at the present day. How the ancient church became so neglected we are not informed, but there were no remains of the edifice in the beginning of the eighteenth century, the site 0 only being known and perpetuated to the present day by the name of Maesycapel. There is much to applaud and commend in the earnestness and enthusiasm of the Vicar by restoring to Gwespyr its ancient rites, and it is suggested that the correct dedication would be that of St. Beuno. 11
