THE EARTHQUAKE. Bishop of Carlisle's Protest Against Profanity. The earthquake in Calabria and Sicily was referred to by Bishop Diggle when preaching in Carlisle Cathedral on Sunday. He said he had read in a newspaper that this appalling catastrophe was a judgment of God upon Messina and Reggio, and added at once that he absolutely disbelieved it. There was a connection between the physical and the moral universe, but this was not the connection. Were the people of lleggio and Messina greater sinners than the people of England ? There was no abomination per- petrated in Reggio and Messina which was not perpetrated daily in London. Suppose —and it seemed perfect profanity and blas- phemy to do so—that this great catastrophe was called down by the sins of Reggio and Messina, why was not a worse catastrophe called down upon London ? There was no vice, no villainy, no sin, no violation of the moral law perpetrated in Messina and Reggio which all this week had not been per- petrated in London. Whatever might be the connection between the physical and moral government of the universe, he hoped they would not imagine because this catastrophe had not come to them that they were any better than the people of Messina and Reggio.
