RHYL PROMENADE.
RHYL PROMENADE. Extension Scheme Rejected by the Ratepayers. On Monday night a public meeting of rate- payers was convened by the Rhyl Urban District Council to consider the proposal to extend the Eastern promenade. Mr G, A. Taverner presided, and was supported by several Councillors. The Chairman explained that the meeting had been called to ascertain the feeling of the ratepayers on the matter. The Council would abide by the decision they arrived at. Mr J. H. Ellis moved a resolution approv- ing of the application to the Local Govern- ment Board for a loan of £4,170 to enable the Eastern Promenade to be linked up with the Western Promenade. He explained that it was proposed to extend the Promenade a distance of 700 yards where it would join the other promenade at the Amphitheatre. On the land side of the wall they might lay out ornamental gardens, grass plots, a lawn tennis ground, or an open-air skating rink. He was convinced that with the wall up there would be a considerable saving in the cartage ot sand drift. The work would greatly improve the appearance of the town, and would also provide work for the unemployed. The cost, even apart from any saving on sand drift, would not work out at a penny in the pound. Mr A. L. Clews seconded, and pointed out that several heavy loan charges would be completed during the year. The cost of the improvement would be infinitesimal compared with the advantages gained. After considerable discussion the resolution was put to the meeting and lost by an over- whelming majority.
THE EARTHQUAKE.
THE EARTHQUAKE. Bishop of Carlisle's Protest Against Profanity. The earthquake in Calabria and Sicily was referred to by Bishop Diggle when preaching in Carlisle Cathedral on Sunday. He said he had read in a newspaper that this appalling catastrophe was a judgment of God upon Messina and Reggio, and added at once that he absolutely disbelieved it. There was a connection between the physical and the moral universe, but this was not the connection. Were the people of lleggio and Messina greater sinners than the people of England ? There was no abomination per- petrated in Reggio and Messina which was not perpetrated daily in London. Suppose —and it seemed perfect profanity and blas- phemy to do so—that this great catastrophe was called down by the sins of Reggio and Messina, why was not a worse catastrophe called down upon London ? There was no vice, no villainy, no sin, no violation of the moral law perpetrated in Messina and Reggio which all this week had not been per- petrated in London. Whatever might be the connection between the physical and moral government of the universe, he hoped they would not imagine because this catastrophe had not come to them that they were any better than the people of Messina and Reggio.

TRAGIC MOTOR ACCIDENT.
TRAGIC MOTOR ACCIDENT. St. Asaph Lady Thrown into the Sea. A motor-car accident of a singular kind is reported to have taken place in the vicinity of Penmaenmawr, about nine o'clock on Saturday night, when two young ladies, daughters of Mrs Cliarlesworth, of St. Asaph, were returning home. The younger was steering, and the chauffeur sat beside her, whilst her sister sat behind. What happened to cause the accident is not known, but for some reason Miss Charles- worth lost control of the machine, which swerved suddenly to the left, dashed towards a narrow opening in the boundary wall, knocked part of the wall down, jumped through the gap, and came to rest within about eighteen inches of the edge of the cliff. It is stated that the younger Miss Charlesworth was thrown over the edge of the cliff, a distance of sixty feet, into the sea. The elder Miss Charlesworth was not thrown out of the car, and only sustained a severe shock. The chauffeur was thrown from his seat and fell on the rock, narrowly escaping his mistress's fate. He was badly shaken, and rendered for a time quite helpless. u

This praise, coming from one who has purchased and tested our Coals, gives direct and convincing evidence of its superior quality. Though many are unanimous in this praise, the judgment of lady critics -however flattering—leaves untouched the most vital point, viz the Price.
