NEWS IN BRIEF.! I
NEWS IN BRIEF. The Chancellor of the Exchequer asserts I that before the end of the present year the Poor Law disqualification in regard to old-age pensions will be removed. The hunger-marchers" went on Monday to the Cardiff City Ball, led by Mr Stewart Gray with a torn red flag. I be Loid J.' tl) 0^ received a deputation, and Mr Or ray as 'e him to use his influence to have set aside for cultivation plots of ground now lymg idle. .1 The Lord Mayor promised his assistance, and then handed the visitors a cigar each. An applicaton has been lodged with the Coal Conciliation Board for the federated mining districts in England and North Wales by the Coalowner's Section for a 5 per cent reduction in the existing rate of wages. At the present time the wages in the ledeiated districts are155 per cent above the standard wage of 188U and within 5 portent of the maximum fixed by the present Board. Tiw depression in trade and the consequent drop in prices has been responsible for lecent reductions of wages in the Scottish and 0 North of England coalfields. Richard Allen, of Welshpool, was on Tuesday sentenced to a month's imprison- ment for stealing two pairs of ladies' boots from the front of a local shop. The Mayor described it as a very bad habit for tradesmen to put goods outside their windows it was for certain people a great inducement to steal, and in fact the shopkeeper was partly accessory to the theft. There would be no objection so long as there was somebody in charge of the goods. Many people were out of employment, and the inducement to steal was very strong. A prick from a nail in his boot, by setting up lockjaw, caused the death of George Arthur Rawlings, 19, of Staines, a labourer, on whom an inquest was held at Lambeth on Tuesday. The evidence showed that the wound was so small that the young man was not concious of it, and the prick was Dot discovered until a careful medical examination had been made at the hospital. For some time the young man had had pains in his back, but these he attributed to the hard work he had been doing. A doctor stated, however, that these pains were early symptons of tetanus. A verdict of accidental death was returned by the jury.
