BARRY (U.D.) SCHOOL BOARD. FORTNIGHTLY MEETING AT CADOXTON. The fortnightly meeting of the Barry School Board was held at the Cadoxton Board Schools on Monday afternoon. There were present. Mr. John Lowdon (chairman), Major-General H. H. Lee. J.P. (vice-chairman), Dr. O'Donnell. Captain Davies, Mr. E. F. Blackmore, Mr. George Thomas (architect), and Mr. W. H. Lewis (clerk). BARRY PARISH SCHOOLS SITE. A letter was road from Mr. J. A. Hughes, secretary of the Barry Estate Company, stating that as the object was a public one, the directors were prepared to let the Board have an acre of Laid for the proposed new schools at Barry Parish for £900, and £100 for the private improvements. —After a short discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Captain Davies, to close with the offer. MORE SCHOOL ArrOIXTMENTS. A sub-committee recommended that the follow- ing new school appointments should be made :— Cadoxton Girls Schools. first assistant, certificated and trained, Miss Mary Ellen Edwards. Waunlwyd, Cardiganshire, but now of the Training College, Swansea; ex-P.T., Miss Emily Wensley, 53, Bolton- street, Bury Cadoxton Boys School, ox-P.T., J. E. Wensley, 56; Bolton-street, Bury Holton-road School Boys Department, first assistant, certified and trained, Mr. E. T. Williams, Barry Board Schools certified assistant, John Edwin Thorpe, St. John's College. York ex-pupil-teachers. David Jones, 13. Lower Alma-place. Pentre; Richard W. Cowan. Newtown, Lesmahagon. Girls' School: certificated assistant, Mary Jane Morgan, of Llangranog, Cardiganshire, but now of the Training College, Swansea ditto, ex-pupil- teacher, Hannah Jane Smith, 7, Mav.son-street, Saltaire, York, Cadoxton Boys' School; first as- sistant master, Harry Whitehouse, 206. Dunstall- road. Wolverhampton. Barry Dock Boys' School first assistant, Frederick William Seidmerson, The College. Homerton. London. Captain Davies drew attention to the fact that at Cadoxton and Holton Schools none of the lead- ing teachers would know Welsh. He was not sure whether tne Board would not yet adopt Welsh as an extra subject.—After a shore discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Mr. E. F. Blackmore, to approve of the appointments.—Miss Stirling and Miss Bullen wrote refusing their appoint- ments to the Holton Infant Department. Miss Williams, Llanbyther, wrote for one of the ap- pointments.—-The Chairman said the applicant spoke Welsh, had passed her (Juten's Scholarship examination, and was in every way qualified.— Captain Davies proposed that Miss Williams (who appeared before the Board) should be appointed at a salary of £ 45.—General Lee seconded, and the motion was carried.—Miss German, who has been unwell for some little time, and who has pre- viously been a teacher under the Board, was nppointtd to fill the other vacancy. JIOLTON-ROAD SCHOOLS.—REPORT OF THE INSPECTOR. The following report of the inspector of the recent examination at the .Holton-road Infant De- partment, lIír, C. T. Whitinell, M.A., wrs read :—" "This is a new school opened in temporary pre- mises last November. There is a very good collection or objects. It would bo useful to teach the gIrlS drawing, and for the first and second classes to re;¡.ll two easy hooks. Counting by strokes should be for- bidden. Under difficult circumstances the work has been carried on witli energy and success, and, making a large allowance for serious, drawbacks, perhaps the highest grant may be recoimaendes:. Heading generally, and arithmetic in the first standard are the points needing most attention. Miss L. Wiloox if recognised under Article 63. The total amount at grant earned is ,:I02 143. 2,1," The chairman said that was the first report they had had of a school examination at that particular school, as the school had not very long been estab- lished. Considering the school had started under very great difficulties, and carried on in a build- ing very unsuitable, he thought tbe board should be very satisfied with what had been done, as the teachers had earned the highest possible grant- (Hear, hear.) BILLS. The following amounts were ordered to be paid —Cadoxton Schools' salaries, £80 2s. 3d. Barry Schools, ditto, ,[:42 5s. 4d.; Holton Schools. £ 43 15.; W. Symond, au account of Holton Schools' con' tract. :1:500; Clerk, petty cash, £20. IIOLTON-ROAD SCHOOLS. Mr. George Thomas reported that the Holt031 Schools would be opened by the end of the yea.r. The infant school was in pretty trood worki11^ order, and the heating apparatus had now 1;eC¡} completed.—The Chairman said it had been sug- gested that a room in the caretaker s resident? erectcd near the new- schools should be resei'V^ for the office of the clerk and attendance officer, and that the caretaker should have the remainder of the building reserved for him.—Eventual further discussion on the latter matter was re served. This was the principal business.
