FOOTBALL. -^0i SOUTH WALES LEAGUE. A meeting of representatives of the different -clubs affiliated to the South Wales Association League was held on Saturday evening at the Grand Hotel. Mr. W. Jones (hon. sec. of the Cardiff Asso- ciation Club) presided, and there were also present: —Mr. J. Sandiford (Cardiff), Mr. J. Davies (Pen- arth). Mr. F. H. Bell (Mountain Ash), Mr. E. Uunnes (Treharris). Mr. J. Chapman (Trelewis), Mr. Sylvan Jones (Pontypridd), Mr. JohnH. Wood- ward (Barry), Mr. D. J. Jones (Cvvinbach). and Mr. C. Axtell (hon. secretary of the South Wales League).—The first matter for discussion was the contest for the League Challenge Cup. a proposition being brought forward that the matches in con- nection with the Cup be played on Saturdays only. The Pontypridd delegate, however, moved an amendment, to the effect that clubs desirous of competing for the trophy on Mabon's Monday be allowed to do so.—On being put to the meeting, the amendment was carried. Eight clubs then sig- nified their intention of entering for the League Challenge Cup competition—namely. Cardiff, Porth, Mountain Ash, Treharris, Trelewis, Ponty- pridd. Barry, and Cwmbach.—Mr. Axtell now sub- mitted a motion that a medal competition take place during the ensuing season for the benefit of the League, which was adopted.—The draw for the latter competition resulted as follows :— BOUND 1. A—Cwmbach v. Blaina. B—Pontypridd v. Mountain Ash. C-Treharris v. Porth. D—Barry v. Trelewis. E-Oardiff, a bye. ROFXD 2. F-C v. winner of A. G-D v. winner of D. II—Cardiff, a bye. IWUXD 3. I-G v. II. j—F, j, bye. The other business transacted was of a routine character, the meeting- terminating with a vote of thanks to the chairman. [NOTES BY I, FREE KICK."] Reports for this column must be received not later than Wednesday afternoon to appear in the current week's issue. Secretaries of local clubs wishing to have their list of fixtures inserted under the Football head- ing are requested to forward me one of their fixture -cards. I was present at the practice of the Cadoxton and Burry District Football Team on Saturday last.. I was pleased to notice several promising new players. Some of the Old 'uns turned up. inclu- ding Morgan, T. Williams, W. Wakeham, Powell, Trurg.and Hopkins, and their play showed no lack of the old spirit. Amongst the new players D. John, as a three- quarter. showed very good form, and I would advise the committee to keep their eyes on him. W. Wakeham and Trigg showed good form as three-quarters, whilst in the forwards Powell, C. Griffiths, and J. Wardrop showed they could use their strength and dribbling powers when necessity arose. The captain informs me that he is very pleased with the attendance and play on Saturday last, and although the team is not likely to be such a heavy one as last year. that deficiency is more than made up by the number of young and promising players who have given their word to do work for the team this season. Altogether. I am inclined to think the District Football Team has a bright future before it. The ground the Local Board has kindly placed at their disposal is far more suitable than the Witchill grounds, and those players who declined to play because of the ground, will now, I trust, come to the fore in a true football spirit. The Barry Club opened their season on Saturday away, travelling to Cardiff to fulfil their initial engagement with the Cathays Club. The game resulted in a crushing defeat for the visitors, but it must be taken into consideration that the home team is one of a good many years' standing, and possess some capital men in Nicholls land Johns. The final score of 1 goal, 12 tries to nil proves that the game was both uninteresting and one- sided. This defeat will be, it is hoped, an incentive towards helping the members of the Barry Club to work harmoniously and combinatively on to victory. It must be remembered that in many cases a bad beginning brings with it a good ending. May this be so. Many footballers will regret to hear of friend W. M. Douglas' intended departure from Cadoxton to Penarth. iMr. Douglas' kindness and urbanity to lovers of sport will not, I am sure, be easily for- gotten. The Barry team made a very poor show at Cathays on Saturday last, being beaten by 1 goal 12 tries. They were beaten at all parts of the game. The collaring of Barry was very backward. One of the Cathays men crossing the line no less than seven times. On Saturday last the Llantwit-Major Football Team commenced practising on their new ground, and visiting teams will find the new ground superior to the old. which is saying a good deal. On Saturday next they play Porthcawl at home, and judging from the form shown oy the team will make a good fight of it, in spite of the loss sustained by the.club by the removal of several of the team from tire neighbourhood, which has made it necessary to give a place to some young blood'
HARVEST HOME AT THE LEYS.
HARVEST HOME AT THE LEYS. A correspondent writes:—On Monday last Channel View, the residence of Captain Thomas, was the scene of much feasting and rejoicing, in celebration of a most successful harvest. There were present, the Captain, his family and friends, his workpeople and their friends, numbering in all about one hundred persons. After an excel- lent supper had been partaken of the rest of the evening was given over to general amusement. In a loud voice the local ''pote" proclaimed the fol- lowing appropriate lines All is safely gathered in, So let the fun at once bejrin. "But whether he referred to the harvest or to the supper we were left to conjecture. It is certain, however, that the fun did begin. Speeches, songs, toasts, &c., were the items of the evening's amusement, and right merrily the time passed only too soon away. Mr. James Thomas caused much diversion among the guests by singing I- Don't get married," more particularly since rumour hath it that, shortly he will enter the matrimonial state, xhe chairman, Mr. Davies, was brimful of fun throughout the evening, his witty speeches causing much laughter amongst the company. Mr. Jones, the genial schoolmaster of St. Athan. made a characteristically brilliant response to the chairman's toast," The Married Men." Many other songs were sung. and many other speeches made, and in this way passed away one of "the most enjoyable evenings I have spent this year. Before departing, the guests joined hands, sang Auld lang syne," and gave another cheer for the hospitable host and his family.
