WOMEN'S LIBERAL ASSOCIATION FOR BARRY. It was Disraeli who, in his writings, first paid a just tribute to the political influence of women. Diaraeli, however, only spoke of women's influence in political intrigues. It has been left to the Primrose League to demon- strate that women can use a more open and a. more potent influence in politics. Until lately Liberals have been chary of giving to women their right place. We are glad, however, to find that of late there has been a distinct and en- couraging advance in the movement for organis- ing women into political organisations. Owing, no doubt, greatly to the active work they have already done in the past for the cause of Disestablishment, Temperance Reform, ani in some districts for Women's Suffrage, Welsh women have responded very readily to the call to band themselves together into political associations, for the furtherance of all Liberal work. Denbigh and Carnarvon in the North, Newport, and Swansea, and Pontypridd in the South, were the earliest places to possess a Women's Liberal Association. But in the past eighteen months, thanks mainly to the un- wearying efforts of Mrs. Eva McLaren, wife of the member for the Crewe Division of Cheshire, aided by a little band of active workers from various parts, the movement has advanced by leaps and bounds. In March of this year representatives from 33 Welsh Associations,, each of which sent delegates in proportion to the number of its members, met at Aberystwith to strengthen and complete their organisation by the formation of a "Welsh Union of Women's Liberal Associations." Both the Council meetings and the public meet- ings were carried through with great enthusiasm and success, and a strong com- mittee was formed of representative ladies from various parts of the Principality, to manage the affairs of the Union, its members being :— Mrs. Egerton Allen, Tenby; Miss Carpenter, Aberystwyth Miss Gee, Denbigh Miss Lloyd, Newtown the Hon. Mrs. Pelham, Monmouth Mrs. Powell, Maes Gwynne Mrs. E. O. Pryce, Bangor; and Mrs. D. A. Thomas, Llanwern. Mrs. Eva M'Laren was unanimously appointed secretary to the Union Mrs. Vaughan Davies of Aberystwyth, treasurer and Mrs. Wynford Philipps, who is the wife of a Pembrokeshire man, and well known in Wales as a worker and speaker, was made president. It was agreed to press forward the work, with the view of in- ducing all parts of Wales to come into the movement. Since then associations have been formed in Flintshire, in Llandudno, and Col- wyn Bay and in East Carmarthenshire. Miss Amy C. Morant is now in Cadoxton on behalf of the Welsh Union, hoping to prevail upon the women of Barry, Barry Dock, and Cadoxton, to come forward in this cause. A public meeting will be held at Barry Dock on Saturday night in furtherance of this move- ment, and on Monday afternoon, at three o'clock, a meeting for women only will be held to form the organisation.

LOCAL NOTES. THE CHUBCH DEFENCE MEETING. In another column will be found letters from two correspondents who seem to think that B.N.C.'s article on the Church Defence Meeting at Barry Dock was somewhat unfair. H Fair-play" complains that we did not give a verbatim report of Mr. Helms' speech. Now, we are always willing to give our opponents a fair hearing, but we candidly confess that we are not prepared to promise a verbatim report to Mr. Helm. It is not so much that we fear that aur dissenting readers would be converted, as that we are afraid that even our Church friends would not read it. A resume of all Mr. Helm's salient points was however given, and we challenge anyone to prove that the report was not strictly correct. It is significant that in some reports of Mr. Helm's speech a long quotation from the Archbishop of Canterbury's speech at Rhyl was inserted, which bad never been used by the speaker. This illustrates how hard it was to give Mr. Helm a tolerably long and full report without eithai- repeating oneself or making quotations which the speaker himself never cited. FBEEDOM OF DISCUSSION. Our friends are also wron; in presuming that we are opposed to the Church question being discussed at all in the district. Nothing is further from our thoughts. We believe with the Chairman of the Church Defence meeting, that the question should be thoroughly thrashed out. It is not against discuss ion that we protest, but against acrimonious discussion.
