MR. A. J. WILLIAMS M.P.. AND THE NEW CLUB AT BARRY DOCK. WE pablish in allDther column a letter from- Mr. A. J. Williams, M.P., and also a description of a meeting held at Holton in connection with the opening of a Club. It is evident from Mr. Williams' letter that he was, at first, under the impression that the Club was being promoted by the whole of the Libeml party, and that oil finding out that a large section of that party are very much opposed to the movement he has wisely withdrawn his support. Mr. Wil- liams is of opinion that a well managed Liberal Workingman's Club is a benefit to the com- munity, so long as steps are taken to pre- vent it degenerating into a mere drinking club. There is a good deal to be said in favour of men belonging to the same party being connected by a social as well as a political bond. We are, however, very much afraid that it will be extremely difficult in this district to establish any Club that will not have a bad influence. There are two or three Clubs already at Barry Dock, and we believe that most of the inhabitants regret their existence. We are sorry to see any Liberals joining to promote a Club in which intoxicants are sold. One of the great objects of true Liberalism is to promote the welfare of the working classes, and we do not think that the formation of such a Club will have this effect.

LOCAL NOTES. «*- ■. BARRY AS A WATERING? PLACE. We are pleased to find that the Barry j District Chamber of Trade is not only still alive, but is pushing ahead in the direction of advancing, as far as possible, the interests of the Barry district—generally speaking. It has in the past taken up several important ques- tions, but we do not think it has taken in hand anything which requires the consideration and foresight as that of advertising the locality as I a seaside resort, or watering place. As many of our readers are aware, there are numerous places I which alone exist by the number of visitors who yearly pay visits to them on account of their health-giving climates and situations. In these respects Barry is on a par with any other seaside place, and the district has only to become ¡ known to make itself popular. The weather we have had during the past few weeks speaks for ¡ itself in that direction, and the question which now the Barry District Chamber of Trade has to consider—and it is a large one—is how the district can be best advertised as a watering place. It is not a mere question of how much the necessary aivertisements would cost or the particular journals in which they are inserted, so much as the way in which the whole scheme is to be managed. We venture to say, with all due respect to those who think otherwise, that it would at present be sheer madness to expend a large sum of money—were it to be ob- tained — in extensively advertising the dis- trict as a fashionable watering place. The first question intending visitors would naturally ask would be, What accommodation have you in the Barry District ?" and if led to believe that they would receive accommoda- tion similar to that provided at other places, we think they would not only be sadly disappointed but it would be a means of seriously damaging the reputation of the district. We are prepared to admit that there are several first-class hotels in the district, but many persons would object to staying there for any lengthened period. No doubt many houses would be prepared for visitors, but everything will take time. It far better to creep than to walk and get I crippled. The Chamber of Trade should endeavour to get daily excursions into the dis- trict both by sea and rail, and when they were fairly established the other part would be easy enough. People would see what was in the place and would in themselves act as advertising agents, while those who have property in the district would see their way more clear and act accordingly. Once there is a steady flow of visitors to the district on excursions bent, Barry will find itself steadily becoming recognised as a seaside resort, and the stay of persons will be lengthened from days to weeks. In conclusion, we can only point out that if the hope of Barry as a seaside resort lies in the number of empty houses, it has its success is far distant, and it will be a long time before it dawns on the horizon. BOAlilJ OF GUARDIANS AXD PARISH couNcrr-F- We are pleased to hear the elected Board of Guardians speaking in such laudable terms of General Lee, Mr. O. H. Jones, and ColomI Woods, who as e.v-oJieio guardians would lose their seats on the Board if the Parish Countil Bill is passed. We feel sure that the ratepayers have no desire to lose such gentlemen, each of whom would undoubtedly be returned at an election. THE LOCAL BOARD ELECTION AND CANVASSERS.
