With careless and abandoned air He leaiif-d upon the mossy wall, And, lightly glancing here and there. Beheld the shades of twilight fall; Dame Nature laid the day to rest, Enwrapped in many a shadow's fold But harshly was his thought expressed, Ugh, what a wind how beastly cold From where the tall cathedral-tower O'er-topped the darkening poplar trees, Forth rang the record of the hour, Borne sweetly on the gentle breeze Melodious notes, with varied sound, Gave, deep and slow, the stroke of eight. But wild impatience spoke, and frowned. "Confound that girl she's always late cl The soothing murmur of the mill The gathering silence scarcely stirred, And echoed in the distance still The final twitter of a bird The waters of the gurgling stream In drowsy accents softly spoke, But prosy was that mortal's theme- I think I'll have a little smoke." A moment more of quiet sped Ere failed again Dame Nature's spell, When lo from ofc the bridge's head. A sudden radiance flashed and fell But not from its erratic course Had dropped at la .c an errant star,- For someone said with angry force By jove there goes my last cigar I" A searching draught, a lengthy watch. A lost cigar, a chilly breeze- What charm that Nature owns can match The Dower of horrors such as these ? But hark—a step your doubt is vain, That face exhibits new delight, The muse, triumphant, speaks again, ■" Oh, Alice, what a lovely night 1" W. E. CULE.

Rheuma- tism in the joints or muscles has been cured even of years' standing—while for cuts, burns, and bruises it's far, very far, ahead of any ointment that has ever been put before the public. LORD CARRIOK says HOJIOCEA cured him of bleeding piles, when all else failed; that he gave some to a labourer who was lamed by a stone falling upon him, whom it cured. A woman had a pain in the elbow and could not bend it for a year, and it cured her, and another used it for scurvy on her leg, and it was doing her good—one letter closes from him with the words, It is the most wonderful stuff that I ever came across." REVIEW OF PUBLICATIONS. COMMERCE." 'IEP Commerce, with which is officially incorporated the Chamber of Commerce Journal, established to promote inter-communication between chambers of commerce throughout the world, is a weekly illustrated publication, price sixpence. The current number contains a lucid and interesting descriptive article dealing with the firm and works of the well-known patent candle manufacturers, Messrs Price and Co., Limited, Battersea, London, giving illustrations of the different buildings, machinery, rooms, icc. Commerce also includes foreign trade notes, paragraphs on finance, com- mercial conversations, consular comments, doings of chambers of commerce in the United Kingdom, items on engineering, and a report of the Mansion House meeting in connection with the Antwerp International Exhibition. Commerce is bound to increase the knowledge of its readers with regard to business, markets, undertakings, &c., and may be obtained at bookstalls, &c., or from the publishers, at Talbot House, Arundel-street, London, W.C. CASSELL'S SATURDAY JOUKXAL." The monthly part (from December 20th to January 10th) of CaxselVx Saturday Journal has been issued, price sixpence, and may be obtained from all newsagents and bookstalls, or from the publishers, Messrs Cassell and Co., Limited, La Belle Sauvage, London, E.C. The monthly part is neatly got up. and forms an interesting volume, containing numerous storyettes, chatty articles on popular subjects, notes on matters of general interest, paragraphs about well-known people, anecdotes, original jokes, jottings, answers to correspondents, and other entertaining reading matters. The Saturday Journal is unlike most other weeklies of this class, for it successfully caters for everyone, being thoroughly readable throughout. WORK." Work, the monthly part of which, from Decem- ber 16th, 1863, to January 13th, is now on sale, andi3 a very successful journal for mechanics. It will always be found to contain complete instructions to make useful articles of furniture, machinery, fretwork, and other popular and useful things, and in this issue will be found articles entitled Edison's phonograph, and how to make it," and even if the reader does not attempt to construct a phonograph, the clear explanations given of its wonderful construction are very instructive and interesting. Work is a most valuable periodical. and mechanics and others can greatly augment their knowledge by its perusal week by week.- Monthly part. price sevenpence, from booksellers, &c., or from Messrs Cassell and Company, Limited. La Belle Sauvage, London, E.C. FOOTBALL THE RUGBY UNION GAME." We have received Part 5 of Football The Bugby Union Game the price of which is six- pence. The parts of this excellent work are issued monthly, and include faithful interesting illustra- tions of different international teams, and scenes in the game. Part 5 continues to deal with international football in recent years in entertain- ing detail, interspersed with appreciative remarks by the well-informed and clever writer of the articles, the Rev. F. Marshall. From newsagents, etc., or from Messrs Cassell and Co., Limited, La Belle Lauvage, London, E.C. "Y GEXINEX." The current number of this deservedly popular and well-organised Welsh national quarterly magazine has been in the hands of the public for two or three weeks, and presents several features of a specially attractive description. One of the most prominent is the competitive ode on "The Welsh Pulpit," composed by Dr. Gurnos Jones for the last national eisteddfod at Pontypridd, when, it will be remembered, one of the adjudicators. Gwilym Cowlyd, sternly advocated the awarding of the prize for this composition, but the other two adjudicators being of contrary opinion, a scene took place between his Honour Judge Gwilym Williams and Gwilym Cowlyd, the recollection of which will probably continue as one of the memorable incidents of the eisteddfod. Emrys ap Iwan" contributes a lengthy and spirited article on Y Classuron Cymreig," but for some reason or other the orthorgraphy of the matter is painfully faulty. Many will read with a great deal of edification and interest the pathetic biographical sketch, by" Gwyneddon," of the late Rev. John Hughes, D.D. The Methodist Revival in its different aspects is dealt with in a masterly manner by the Rev. W. R. Jones (I. Goleufryn ") and Evan Jones, of Carnarvon, furnishes a very timely and able treatment of The Connection between Church and State." The remainder of the contents of the present number is equally edifying and instructive to the progressive Welsh mind, and will, no doubt, be perused with deep interest by all. Y Geniiien, price Is. quarterly, published by W. Gwenlvn Evans, Carnarvon.

In the midst of a struggle Woods's watch was taken from him, and the men left him in an unconscious condition lying on the ground. -The jury returned I a verdict of guilty.—His Lordship deferred passing sentence, in order to ascertain whether the prisoner had been in regular employment at any time, and make inquiry as to his antecedents. THE PORTHKERRY POISONING CASE.
THE PORTHKERRY POISONING CASE. INQUEST ON THE UNFORTUNATE CHILD. On Saturday afternoon last an inquiry was held at Barry Police Station by Mr H. LI. Grover. deputy coroner, and a. jury of which Mr David Morgan was foreman, into the death of Cyril Davies. infant son of Mr Richard Davies. auctioneer, &c., of Holton-road, Barry Dock, who died on the 9th instant under circumstances already reported in the Barry Deck Xeivx. Evidence of identification was given by Mrs Amelia Davies. mother of deceased, and living at New Farm. Cwmciddr. Mrs Davies stated de- ceased was one year and four months old. On the morning of the 9th instant she saw him with some matches in his hands, but did not know how he came in possession of them. By deceased's breath she could tell he had been biting the heads of the matches, but noticed nothing wrong until evening, when deceased vomited after eating food. and she thought the sickness would do him good. Early next morning, however, deceased was so bad that her husband had to carry him to Barry to Dr Neale's surgery. Wben brought back deceased was alive, but died about five o'clock. She could not say how deceased got the matches. — Mr Richard Davies, the father, said the box of wax vestas produced was his. On the Tuesday night he placed his coat containing the matches on the table, and the next morning he saw deceased with the box in question, and biting the heads of the matches, the same being at once taken from the child. Witness then deposed to carrying deceased to Dr Neale's surgery.-Dr J. C. King, assistant to Dr Neale, said deceased was brought to the surgery on the morning named. The child was in a state of collapse, the pulse was weak, and deceased was nearly insensible. He administered emetics, and found it was too late to do anything further, so he gave a stimulant. In his opinion deceased had died from phosphorous poisoning.—A verdict was returned accordingly.

On Friday morning last. shortly before noon, four men from the Barry Graving Dock and Engineering Company's works, were told off to scrape the sides of the steamer Wildcroft, of London, and do other repairs. For this purpose they got into a boat, and rowed to the port side. They had scarcely fastened the boat to, when the steamer, suddenly lurched and drifted to- wards the quay wall, the vessel lying at the time off the jetties on the western side. The weather being very squally, it was feared the steamer would have jammed the boat, so that two of the men in the latter sprang to some ropes hanging over the ship's side and climbed to the top. while the other two. amid much excitement on the part of the spectators, did all they could to push the boat off to the end of the quay wall, wnich they succeeded in doing just in time to escape what would undoubtedly have proved a catastrophe. SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT BARRY…
SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT BARRY DOCK. MIRACULOUS ESCAPE OF A LABOURER. On Thursday afternoon, as a man named Sidney Roberts, a labourer living in Lee-street, Cadoxton- Barry. was at work at some excavations in connec- tion with Mr J. Jackson s deep lock works at Barry Dock, a huge boulder upon which he stood suddenly gave way, and Roberts was hurled head- long to the bottom, a d°pth of between 40 and 50 feet. Fortunately the boulder, being of greater specific gravity, reached the bottom first. otherwise the poor fellow would doubtless have been pulverised. As it was, when picked up Roberts was found to have been shockingly injured, the right arm having sustained a compound fractui e. together with the hip bone, and the body was more or less bruised all over. The unfortunate sufferer was promptly attended to by Dr Livingstone, of Holton-road, and as soon as possible was despatched on the Barry Company's ambulance carriage to the Cardiff Infirmary, where he now lies under treat- ment. Dr Livingstone describes the man's escape from a shocking death as a miraculous one. :8
