BARRY PILOTS ARE DIS- SATISFIED. THEY CLAIM DIRECT REPRESENTATION ON THE PILOTAGE BOARD. A feeling of dissatisfaction is springing up on the part of Barry port and channel pilots. When Barry Dock was opened, both for port and channel purposes, Cardiff and Newport men were appointed. Cardiff pilots were also appointed to represent Barry on the Pilotage Board. The Barry pilots now, however, maintain they are entitled to direct representation on the pilotage board for Barry, so that any grievance they may labour under may be fairly and impartially reported to the authorities, and not, as at present, by pilots residing at Cardiff holding Cardiff and Barry licenses. It is maintaiaed that the interests of the Cardiff resident pilots are not identical with those of Barry, hence the present agitation. Un- satisfactory decisions, they declare, have been given against them on more than one occasion, and they now ask, therefore, for an opportunity to protect their own interests.

A CARDIFF SHIP'S OFFJCER DROPS DEAD AT BARRY. On Wednesday afternoon last, about five o'clock a ship's officer dropped dead at Culley's Hotel, Barry Dock. Mr Joseph Hedghill, aged 57, living in Mackintosh-place. Cardiff, the chief engineer of the ss. St. Fagan's, visited the smoke- room of the hotel named in company with Superintendent engineer Mow, and having drank a portion of a glass of beer served to him, he entered into conversation with Mr Mow, when he suddenly fell to the floor and died almost immediately. Dr Bray. of Travis-street, attributed the cause of death probably to heart disease. An inquest was held on the body at Culley's Hotel on Thursday, when a verdict of Death from natural causes was returned.

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF FRANK HALE, OF CADOXTON. Frank Hale, aged 12, son of Mr Isaac Hale, who again ran away from his home at Cadoxton a fortnight ago, is now at Stourbridge Workhouse.

LECTURE AT BARRY PARISH HALL ON THE WORK OF THE S.P.C.K. On Thursday evening, the 22nd ultimo, a very interesting lecture, illustrated by beautiful magic lantern views, on the subject of the history and work of the venerable society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, was given by the Rev W. B. Taylor, one of the organising secretaries of the Society. The lecturer gave a striking account of the large scope of the society's work both at home and abroad during its long and excellent record of close upon 200 years. This, the first and oldest of all our Church societies, was set on its course in the year 1698 by a band of holy and zealous men, numbering among them the saintly Bishop Wilson, Bishops Butler and Burnett, Robert Nelson, and the father of John and Charles Wesley. Not only as our oldest Bible Society, and not only as putting into the hands of the people of every parish in England and Wales sound and pure Christian literature at marvellously cheap cost, but also as aiding by large and munificent grants the work of the Church in the colonies, the building of Sunday schools, the maintenance and endowment of training colleges, and, by a substantial special 11 el grant, the rescue of a large number of Church schools in Wales from extinction, this society may well be said to hold strong and urgent claims to the willing and generous support (much needed for the maintenance of its gigantic and many-fold good work) of all friends of the Church. At the close of the lecture, which was listened to with much interest, Canon Allen proposed a hearty vote of thanks and appreciation to the lecturer, aud also to their good friend Mr Spreat, who kindly gave effective help by presenting the magic lantern pictures in their due order whilst the lecturer con- tinued his address. This was carried by acclama- tion. A collection was made during the singing of the first hymn for the general funds of the society amounting to 15s 8d.

BARRY TRAINS TO CARDIFF DOCKS. PROBABLE OPENING OF THE NEW SECTION ON THE 1ST APRIL. THE WORK RAPIDLY APPROACHING COMPLETION. It is satisfactory to know that the directors of the Barry Company are determined to extend their railway system to the Cardiff Docks without the smallest possible delay, and we are reliably irf- formed that there is every probability of the Barry trains beginning to run through from the Riverside Station to the Bute Dock at Cardiff on Monday, the 2nd April, and it is the intention of the com- pany under the new arrangement to run the whole of their trains along the entire distance between Barry and Cardiff Docks. With the exception of a few lengths of rails at the Docks end, the rail- way has been completed and signal-box and signals erected. The station near the canal bridge in James-street, which is of a temporary character, is also well advanced. The platform has been all but completed, and the wooden structure which covers it only needs a covering of tarpaulin, a coating of paint, and the erection of a ticket-office to make it available for traffic. The Taff and Barry Companies have running powers over this branch of the Great Western Railway, but it is questionable whether the former will at present avail themselves of their privilege. The opening of the branch will give excellent facilities to those engaged at the Docks to travel between that of commercial industry and the centre of the town, as well as between the docks at Cardiff and those at Barry.

SAD DEATH OF A CARDIFF LADY.-We regret to announce the death of Mrs Jane Barwell, wife of Mr Henry Barwell. of 29, Kinraig-street, Roath, Cardiff, and mother-in-law of Mr D. Roberts, shipping superintendent, Barry, which occurred an Wednesday, the 21st ult., as the result of an accident. The deceased lady was interred on Monday at Cardiff Cemetery. Evans, the general manager of the Barry Company), a vote of deep sympathy was passed with the president of the party (Mr D. Roberts) and family upon their recent bereavement, the vote being passed amid respectful silence. YOUNG MEN'S BIBLE CLASS.—At the usual weekly meeting of the bible class in connection with the Parish Church, to be held this evening (Friday), at the Parish Hall, the Rev J, Price, St. Paul's, will deliver an address.—An able and instruc- tive lecture, entitled Astronomy." was delivered by Captain W. B. Whall at the Church Hall, Barry, on Thursday evening last. There was a good attendance, and the Rev J. Du Heaume occupied the chair. Captain Whall's remarks were listened to with much interest, and questions were also asked and answered at the close, a hearty vote of thanks being accorded the lecturer for the enter- taining evening he had provided. Whether this is so in point of fact or not I could not say, but feel proud of their conduct in con- nection with the successful raid which they made on a notorious house in Travis-street last week. They are certainly to be congratulated on the able way the case was got up, and. judging from the evidence given at the court, had not P.C. Evans been prompt in his action to burst open the back door, they would have been defeated in their efforts. Great credit is due to the three constables for the accuracy of their evidence, which did not leave the shadow of a doubt in the case. I trust this is only a beginning of still firmer action on the part of the police to stamp out the ahebeening evil in our midst. It is to be hoped also that they will not lose sight of the brothels which are springing up so rapidly in this district, to which you gave a timely warning last week of the great danger young girls are open to. DISTINCTION FOR A BARRY ENGINEER. The Council of the Institute of Civil Engineers have just conferred upon Mr Charles R. Walker, A.M.I.C.E., the consulting engineer of the Barry and Cadoxton Local Board, the distinction of membership of the institute in consideration of several important engineering vorks he has successfully carried through during the past few years, both in England and Wales. Mr Walker is a nephew of the late Mr T. A. Walker, the con- tractor of the Barry Docks, Severn Tunnel, Manchester Ship Canal, &c. There are uowards of 4,000 association members of the Institute of Civil Engineers, but only 1,825 members.
