NON OBSERVANCE OF THE SABBATH AT PENARTH. ONE of the most important subjects which has engaged the public mind of Penarth for a long time is the question of the non- observance of the Sabbath by members of the local golf club. It seems almost incredible—indeed, incomprehensible— that a number of so-called gentlemen, some occupying undoubtedly prominent social positions in Cardiff and Penarth, should lend themselves to what popular opinion rightly considers to be a wanton system of desecration of the Lord's Day by, indulging in frivolous games on the Sabbath. The heaths of Lower Penarth have been the scene of Sunday golf-play- ing, it is stated, for the past two or three years, but not until a recent Sunday evening was public attention prominently drawn thereto by means of an outspoken sermon delivered by the Rev Isaac 0. Stalberg, at the Stanwell-road English Baptist Chapel, with a result that a con- siderable amount of excitement and indignation has been expressed by the general public. So far, however, protests have been unavailing, for, imbued with a spirit of sham bravado, the offending members of the golf club have continued to play at the "links" every Sunday. The Sabbatarian and Anti-sabbatarian parties have, therefore, entered into con- flict with each other, and we have no doubt whatever with what eventual result, for surely a nobleman of the un- impeachable standing of Lord Windsor, the president of the club and owner of the ground, will, when his lordship's attention is drawn to the matter through the instrumentality of Mr Robert Bevan, as member of the Penarth Local Board, take prompt steps to advise the club that! the conduct of its members is, to say the least, unbecoming and irreverent. We have endeavoured to arrive at facts point- ing to the cause of the evil. In another column we publish lengthy comments by one of our special representatives upon the subject, and inasmuch as it is our duty to be quite candid we must declare it is our opinion that members of the Roman Catholic denomination at Penarth are a good deal responsible for the secular movement which has thus been intro- duc-ed. Priest and people alike openly aver complete justification of the existing practice of indulging in athletic pastimes on the Lord's Day. Indeed, Father M'Clements goes so far as to maintain the propriety of participation in football, cricket, golf, riding, fishing, 0 07 and other recreative games and exercises on Sunday. The clergy of the Estab- lished Church, as a rule, we are sorry to find occupy a position astride the fence, and are careful not to express an opinion in favour of, or against, the innovation, although Vicar Thompson, of Cardiff, is an avowed advocate of a species of the Continental Sunday system in Christian England and Wales. It is to the Non- conformist's conscience, therefore, we are obliged to turn for a wholesome remedy for the pernicious evil which is rising. That Mr Robert Bevan is fully justified in the attitude he has determined to take up, by introducing a motion at an early meeting of the Local Board to approach Lord Windsor by means of an official communication asking his lord- ship's interference in the matter, we are firmly convinced, for if the Local Board was justified in interfering with tho morale of the people by adopting it resolution in favour of the Welsh Sunday Closing Act, and if the Glamorgan County Council were justified in passing a resolu- tion in support of tt e Local Veto Bill, then surely Mr Bevan's conduct is amply justified when he pluckily enters the arena and champions the cause of Sabbatarianism by aiming a deadly blow at what is rightly considered to be a vicious attempt on the part of a would-be re- spectable section of the townspeople of Penarth to degrade the Sabbath to the level of an ordinary week-day.

SHOULD NOT OUR SEWER MEN SMOXE ? "Observer," commenting in the Evening Express upon the ei-litorial note published in the Barry Dock News last week on the subject of Should sewer-men smoke while at work ? states :— "The Barry Duel: New* pleads that its sewer hands (Barry's, that is, not the journal's) should be allowed to smoke when engaged in this and similar odorous jobs. Certainly, and at Cardiff and elsewhere too. I smoke but little myself,. and am the one awful exception in this office, where the cloud is so thick you could almost sell it for packing purposes at so much a pound but I have a lot of sympathy with smokers, sewer-men and otherwise. Whenever a work- ing-man's pipe is not likely to be a nuisance he should be allowed to smoke it is an indul- gence that pleases him immensely, and can surely do no harm to his master. When the work is at all noisome smoking may not only help men to perform an unpleasant task, but actually aci as a sanitary safeguard." ANOTHER INVENTION BY A BARRY TOWNSMAN. An invention likely to be of the greatest value to all owners and drivers of horses has just been patented by one of our Barry townsmen. It is claimed for this inven- tion that any horse, however powerful, may be brought to a standstill even if it has furiously bolted, and that, by a simple touch to a lever, horses may be left alone without the possibility of running away. As this is now protected, we may so far describe the method adopted as to state than an additional rein is attached to a drum at the axle of the trap or wagon. This rein is attached to the ring at the mouth, the same as the driving rein. The drum is set at work by the action of a small lever, which could be easily moved with one hand whilst the other held the rein. We hope, in a short time, to be able to direct attention to a trap in this district in which the new principle has been tried, and if it is as successful as seems likely it should be largely adopted. BARRY MALE VOICE PARTY. The members of this popular party, under the leadership of Mr D. Farr, are rapidly perfecting themselves in view of entering the male voice 0 competition at Caerphilly eisteddfod on Whit- Monday. During the week or so previous t& that occasion we are pleased to understand the party intend giving public rehearsals of the test piece in the Barry district, probably one each at Barry, Barry Dock, and Cadoxton. A grand concert in aid of the funds of the Male Voice Party will also be held at the Market Hall, Barry, on the Saturday evening previous to Whit-Monday, for which occasion the services of prominent artistes have been secured, and the test piece will again be rendered. The Male Voice Party have always given their services gratuitously towards the promotion of all objects of charity in the dis- trict, and it is, therefore, the bounden duty of the public of Barry now to rally round the party, and provide tijem with funds to defray the expenses connected with their forthcoming visit to Caerphilly. If successful on Whit- Monday, it is not improbable that the party will enter the same competition at Bridgend eisteddfod a month or two later. THE SANDY BEACH OFF BARRY ISLAND DISFIGURED. One of the most beauti- ful seaside resorts along the coast of the Bristol Channel has just been considerably disfigured. A few weeks ago, it will be rememberer the large iron ship Vanduara ran ashore during a storm off Barry Island, and when hauled off a few days afterwards she was beached on the sands in Whitmore Bay. In order, therefore, to tow her round into Barry Dock for repairs the cargo of coke had to be discharged on to the sands, where the wreckage still remains in large heaps 0 along the beach, completely spoiling this beautiful bit of sand, at least for this summer, so far as bathing conveniences are concerned. Up to the present scarcely any steps have been taken to remove the unbecoming material, and it is evident that unless somothing is promptly done in the matter, the coke will soon be washer1 by the action of the sea all over the beach, and render Whitmore Bay unattractive to visitors for several seasons to come. The owner of the land is the Right Hon. Lord Windsor, and we hope, in the interests of this charming watering place, the attention of his lordship will be drawn to the matter, and that steps be taken to remove the wreckage before further mischief is done.
