GLAD TIDINGS FOR BARRY. AFTER a long and trying period of anxious C, expectation and weary waiting, the public of the Barry district-and many of those outside who have in different ways created for them- selves vested interests in the new community -will this week be glad to learn that the Barry directors have at last determined to proceed actively with the works connected with the new dock. For this purpose announcements have during the past few days appeared in the principal engineering papers of-the country inviting tenders for the construction of the first section of the new dock. The area of the initial section will comprise about twenty acres of the land which it is intended to i cover, and inasinUck as tho tenders must be in hand by the 18th of June, it is evident that the Company intend the work to be well in hand before the fall of the year. This announcement, we have no doubt, will not only have the effect of brightening the hopes of the public of Barry C, as to the progressive future of the district, but also tend to revive the general condition of trade in our midst, and likewise add con- siderably to the commercial importance of the well-known Barry Docks. There has been no reason whatever to doubt the sincerity of the Barry directors from the outset. Their position on several grounds has been one of consider- able difficulty, but now that they have their new Bills well before Parliament, and, with the most reasonable prospects of reaching that success of which Barry is already proverbially famous, they naturally feel justified in setting on foot a new undertaking which will materially en- hance the shipment facilities of the Barry Docks. The present seems a favourable opportunity for undertaking a work of such importance. The prices of materials are down, and the labour market being some- what settled, and labour, therefore, obtainable at reasonable rates, there is no apparent ground for anticipating any serious difficulty j in either of these respects. « With the announcement of the new dock being commenced, we may inform our readers ■ that the prospects of renewed activity in the < district are greater than they have been for 1 two or three years. It is understood that no i time will be lost in taking in hand the work of adapting the main line between Barry and i Pontypridd for passenger traffic. Other j works of development, it is contemplated, j will, at no distant period, be undertaken by c the Company. 'J We are also glad—without unduly indulg- j; ing the hopes of our readers-to be in a posi- s tion to announce this week that the contract c ( for the construction of the Vale of Glamorgan I Railway will be let within the next two or j three months. The necessary preliminaries are being rapidly completed by the original Company, the whole of the land required has been secured, and the different station sites have been fixed. In this great additional undertaking the hands of the Vale of Glamorgan Railway Company will be sub- stantially strengthened by the aid of the Barry Company, who will, of course, I be very largely benefitted by the operations of I this new and important undertaking, for I every ton of mineral and other traffic which will be brought over this line must necessarily find its natural terminus at the Barry Docks. ¡

The Barry Chamber of POSTAL FACILITIES Trade would confer a great IN THE VALE. boon upon a considerable area of the Vale of Gla- morgan by taking steps to bring about the enlargement of the borders of Barry so far as postal jurisdiction is concerned. At present, the greater portion of the Vale of Glamorgan is under the supervision of Cow- bridge, sub to Cardiff, and owing to the con- siderable distance which intervenes between Cowbridge and some of the rural districts a state of things altogether very undesirable exists. For instance, letters, in order to fall into the evening despatches from Cardiff, have to be posted at Penmark and Llancarfan by half-past three and four o'clock respectively, whereas, if this portion of the district were linked to Barry, the boxes need not be cleared till five or six o clock. This arrangement would also allow letters to be delivered in those parts at an earlier hour in the morning, so that the advantage to the public of the agricultural dis- tricts referred to would be two-fold. In view of the proposed separate Poor Law Union for Barry, including the parishes of Penmark, Llancarfan, etc., the present seems to be a con- venient opportunity for setting on foot an agitation for the inclusion of the upper portion of the Vale of Glamorgan in the postal district of Barry. It is no reflection whatever upon the Barry Male Voice BARRY MALE Party that they failed to VOICE PARTY, bring home with them last week the first prize from Caerphilly Eisteddfod. On the other hand, they deserve to be warmly con- gratulated upon securing the second prize on I that occasion. The Barry Male Voice Party, no doubt, lacks considerably in numbers, and the fact that they have two years in succession come so near the chief laurels proves that if they only had a much-needed accession to their numbers the party would be in a position to gain still greater fame in musical circles. It is not unreasonable to state that the Male Voice Party should number at least one hundred voices, and if this had been the case this year- if the degree of artistic excellence of the voices available had been supplemented by an addi- tional volume of power—there is not the slightest doubt that they would to-day be the holders of the principal award in their particular competition at Caerphilly Eisteddfod on Whit- Monday. The party deserves well at the hands of the public of Barry, and those who possess the ability should forthwith take advantage of the opportunity offered, and co-operate in raising the local society of male C, voices to its full strength. We hope this appeal will not be made in vain, for Barry should not be content until it is represented by a male voice party worthy of the fair fame of the district in other respects.

SAD ACCIDENT TO AN OLD MAN AT CADOXTON-BARRY. KNOCKED DOWN BY A TRAIN AND RUN OVER. On Tuesday evening last an old man named Gabriel Powell, aged 70, unch to Mr W. Thomas, Coldbrook Farm, near Cadoxton-Barry, with whom he lived, wae crowing the Barry mairy line of railway between Cadoxton and Palmers- town, when a mineral train suddenly steamed along and knocked him down. The driver of the engine, perceiving the accident, at, once stopped the train, and thi oil man was picked up, when it was found le had been terribly cut about the head, also injured about the right arm and ribs. He was carried home, and Dr Treharne, of Cadoxton, has since been in attend- ance. The injured man was in search of some strayed cattle at the time of the accident.

Mary Ann Squires, who carried a baby in ler arms, and who had not appeared for some iime in court, was dismissed Edward Samuel, 3arry, being sent away on paying 2s M.— Martin Lewis and Thomas Gunn were also iharged with being drunk and disorderly. Gunn vas let off, but Lewis was fined 5s.- rhomas Burns subsequently appeared, and Police- :onstable G. W. Phillips said on the 17th instant, 1e saw defendant drunk and disorderly in Holmes- treet, and kicking his wife. Evidence for the lefence was given, and defendant said this was mly a family matter,' but it was finished now- •i:ied 5s.
