RESCUE WORK IN NORTH WALES.
RESCUE WORK IN NORTH WALES. SIR, —To give a fuller explanation of what our Rescue Work scheme is, at this early stage of our proceedings, is somewhat difficult. At present we have not had time to receive answers from the various Boards of Guardians in North Wales to whom we have sent the resolution passed at the preliminary meeting held at Conway. For the information of those who may not have seen the resolution, it is as follows That this meeting, being au outcome of the North Wales Poor Law Conference held last September at Carnarvon, is of opinion that there is urgent need that some imme- diate steps should be taken to form a rescue association for North Wales, and it is hoped that all Boards of Guardians and others interested in the work will heartily co-operate. Seventeen Boards of Guardians have expressed sympathy in the scheme and before many weeks have passed we hope to have their official sanction to appoint ladies to visit their workhouses. It is very gratifying to find so many Boards of Guardians interested, the sympathy and co-operation of the officials at the various workhouses, we have every reason to believe, will be forthcoming and certainly will be most necessary to ensure the success of the scheme. We want first to appoint lady visitors to deal with likely cases, as there are many women to whom a helping hand will be given, to enable them to regain their footing as respectable members of the community. We hope to imitate the work now being suc- cessfully carried on in different workhouses in England, whereby the mother is not only put into the way of earning her own living in suitable snrroundings, but the child is rescued from pauperism and properly cared for under healthy conditions-the ratepayers as well as the individual being benefitted. Apart from the interest and prominence given to the matter by the Press, many people much interested in the welfare of the com- munity, have already written offering their sympathy and support. We have also learnt that the president of the North Wales Women's Temperance Committee (Mrs Her- bert Lewis) is bringing the matter before her 1 0 c) Executive Committee at Llanrwst and else- where. Such a body of workers will be of material assistance in making the pressing need of this work known. If all the societies working in North Wales would unite to create a sound public opinion, the blot now resting on our beautiful land will be greatly lightened. itt \Ve have not at present appealed for funds generous friends having defrayed expenses so far, but we feel confident that once the work has been started the need of a Rescue Home for North Wales to deal with suitable cases will be proved beyond doubt. We should like to see the movement being taken up in Wales without question of creed or politics, as it touches the root of the nation, and can be helped by all public bodies, as well as Boards of Guardians. We trust the religious bodies will raise their voices in no uncertain tones that there is an evil in our midst which requires to be exposed and then overcome.—Yours faithfully, EDITH CHAMPNEYS ) C, • Tr -i, Secretaries. FOOTBALL.
FOOTBALL. Meliden v Rhyl Amateurs. This match was played at Rhyl last Satur- day. Meliden journeyed to Rhyl minus seven regular players, but the reserves justi- fied their positions in the team. Rhyl won the toss and played with the sun at their backs. They immediately pressed, but Thomas cleared with a huge kick, and trans- ferred play to the other end. The Rhyl forwards came again and Blain in trying to save threw the ball against the post and it rebounded into the net. After this reverse Meliden played finely and scored through A. V. Hughes. Again the Meliden forwards went up and ten minutes later J. Hughes scored. The play now slowed down a little till half time, and the teams crossed over with Meliden leading by 2 goals to 1. Restarting the Meliden forwards scored two goals in quick succession through Edwards and C. Jones, and Rhyl scored five, the game ending in a win for Rhyl by 6 goals t) 4. The Meliden team were J. B. Blain, A. Owens and W. Thomas, 0. Williams, D. J. Parry, R. Pierce, R. Jones, David Edwards, C. Jones, A. V. Hughes and J. Hughes. 0 STUD MARKS. D. J. Parry at centre-half was the best man on the field. 0. Williams and R. Pierce (reserves) played well in their first game with the Seniors. Cecil Jones was a good centre forward and essayed some fine movements, while Edwards' touches were a feature. R. Jones was too speedy fur the backs many a time. A. V. Hughes was in form and that means a good deal. FULL BACK.
