To be excitable or nervous in a small degree is most distressing, for where can a remedy be found ? Here is one Drink but little wine, beer, or spirits, or far better abstain from them altogether,; do not take coffee-weak tea is prefer- able; get all the fresh air you can; take three or four of the Pills every night; eat plenty of solids, and avoid the use of slops. It these golden rules are followed, you will be happy in mind, strong in body, and forget you have any nerves. Mothers and Daughters. If there is one thing more than another for which the<e Pills are so famous, it is for their purifying properties, especially their power of cleansing the blood from all impurities, and removing dangerous, ami renewing suspended secretions. Universally adopted as the one grand remedy for female complaints, these Pills never fail, never weaken the system, and always bring about what is required. Disorders of the Kidneys. In all diseases affecting these organs, whether they secrete too much or too little water; or whether they be atiiicted with stone or gravel, or with aches and pains settled in the loins over the regions of the kidneys, these Pilis should be taken according to the printed directions, and the Ointment should be well rnboed into the small of the back at bed time. This treatment will give almost immediate relief after all other means have failed. The Stomach out of Order. Xo medicine will so effectually improve the tone of the stomach as these Pills; they remove all acidity, occasioned eithei by intemperance or improper diet. They reach the liver .11(1 reduce it to a healthy action they are wonderfully effica- cious in cases of spasm—in fact tbey never fail in curing all disorders of the liver and stomach. <> Bronchitis, Diptheria, Coughs and Colds. Xo diseases are more frequent, few more dangerous, than atieeUons uf the respiratory organs. The first symptoms of discovered action may always be removed by Hollow ay's re- nowned Pills. They quickly remedy any temporary stagnation of the blood, relieve any overgorged veins, moderate the hurried breathing, and enable the windpipe lllld lungs to perform their functions with ease and regularity. These Pilis by their purifying powers, cleanse the blood from all impurities, and thus fori ify the system against consumption, asthma, and other pulmonary complaints. -0- Holloicay's Pills are the best remedy known in the world for the jollowing diseases Ague Femalelrregularities Scrofula, or Asthma Fevers of all kinds King's Evil Bilious Complaints Fits Sore Throats Blotches on the Skin Guut Stone and Gravel Bowel Complaints Head-ache SscondarySymptoins Colics Indigestion Tic-Douioureux Constipation of the Inflammation Tumours Bowels Jaundice Ulcers Consumption .Liver Complaints Veneieal Affections riebliity j Lumhago Worms of all kinds dropsy Piles Weakness, from Dysentery I RlwlImatism whutevercause, Erysipelas Retention of Urine See., See Sold at the Establishment of Professor Hollownv, 244, Strand near Temple Bar), London; also, by all respectable Druggists ind Dealers on Medicines throughout, the civilized world at the allowing prices Ls, ljd., 2s. 9d., 4s. 6d., lis., 22s., and 33s. =ach Box. ) There is a considerable saving by taking the larger sizes. A NEW ROUTE To ENGLAND.=
A NEW ROUTE To ENGLAND. = (From tÍte Irish Times) u' Mr. Haughtnn, the able chairman OF the C Southern and WestGi-n Railway Company [Ireland" at the meeting last Saturday indicated in his model' speech some ot the sources of strength and weakness to which his company is subject, and in doin-so touched upon the dangers from opposing COTCNANIES AMOCNO-SSIREAITF.N-?D SP.]ENDID There is if it nass 10 T V'!LS FOR THIS SESSION ONE which, of the Great ^!A>'DREADF'"L HAYOC upon the traffic or me o-reat bouthern and Western Onmivmv Last session an Act of Parliament was obtained to amalgamate a number of Welsh Railway Companies into one, which was called the Cambrian Raihv^ Company, and the immortal Whalley was made the first Chairman. This company has come forward this year to extend their line to Aberdovey in Merionethshire, and have also a bill to authorise them to establish steamers between Aberdovey and the ports of Wexford and Waterford. These are the words of the clause in the new Cambrian Hail- way (Steamboats) Bill:—" The company from time to time may make. purchase, and hire and work and use, and let for hire all such steam and other ships A £ 1.(^. VJSSE^S EVER>T OR any description as they think fit; and in their vessels may convey passengers animals, minerals, goods, and other things of what- ever description, between Aberdovey, in the county of and the ports of Waterford and Wex- ford respectively, and mav do all things whatsoever which from time to time the company may reason- ably consider to be incidental or accessory to those purposes respectively." Now, this Cambrian Rail- way taps the London and North-Western at the point in its system near which the Great Western, the Midland, the great Northern, and other main English lines either directly, or by its branches, meet it, and the entire traffic to be gathered from these systems can be as cheaply collected at Aber- dovey as they can be brought to Holyhead. But, besides this, the London and North-Western Com- pany are bound by agreement to give to the Cam- brian Company a rebate of 50 per cent. on the carriage of all goods which the latter brings to or gathers from the London and North-Western. It is only, then, for the Cambrian Company to get this JJ1- A"D i111 R,HE S°°ds to or from 'Manchester, Sheffield, London, and other main seats of English business, and the South of Ireland, will be drawn from the Great Southern and Western line and sent by Waterford or Wexford over the Duke of Devonshire's and the Waterford and Limerick lines in the south of Ireland. In the face of such compe- tition, it is clearly for the interests of the London and North-W estern and the Great Southern and Western Companies to make their arrangements as satisfactory as possible to the shippers of cattle and dealers of grain and produce who may require to send goods between the South of Ireland and Eng- land; and;certainly, of the two companies, it behoves the Great Southern and Western Company to look especially to their interests before it be too late to recover their hitherto safe dividend.

THE LIFEBOAT.
THE LIFEBOAT. TO THE EDITOR (IF THE AlfERTSTVriTir OBSEKTEK. SIR.-Nlay I ask why the lifeboat has been per- mitted to lie in the harbour, and its carriage on the slip, for the last two months, exposed to the rotting influence of the weather, when a house exists for the shelter of both? Are there no persons to take the boat to its proper cover, or is exposure to the wet weather advantageous to the timber and iron- work of the boat and its carriage ? If the latter is the cause, why then let the boat-house be put to some use other than that of standing a monument of national absurdity. Possibly those in authority are waiting for fine weather to take the boat round. It seems the lifeboat authorities are passionately attached to fine weather. I asked, some time since of one of the crew, when the lifeboat was likelv to go out for a trial. The answer was, Next week weather permitting." A comfortable proviso this for the crew of a lifeboat. WELSH BIOGRAPHY. !
WELSH BIOGRAPHY. Arthur, King of Britain in the sixth century, famous in the romances of. the "Round Table. | The life of this personage is so mixed up with fables that even his existence is problematical. According to tradition, he was the son of Uthr Bendargon, a chief of the Britons, and succeeded that prince about 516 A.D. With the aid of the enchanter Merlin, who gave him a magic sword, he conquered the Saxons, Picts, and Scots, and subjected Ireland. He signal- ised himself by a thousand exploits on the Continent. I He married Genevieve, or Gwinevere, his relation, who afterwards deceived him. He established Chris- tianity in his estates, and instituted the order of chivalry known by the name of the Round Table and died on the field of battle in the year 542, aftpr a glorious reign. Alfred Tennyson has made certain circumstances in connection with the life of Arthur the subject of one of his finest poems—the Idyls of the King." J OW ex Glendower (or Owen Glyndwr), born in 1348, was the last branch of the native sovereigns of Wales. He was made a knight by Richard II., King of England, in defence of whom he fought against the usurper Henry IV., who deprived him of his lands, which he bestowed upon Lord Grey. Glendower then collected his friends, and made Grey prisoner, whom, however, he ransomed for a large sum of money. Following up his success, he subdued Glamorganshire, and caused himself to be acknowledged sovereign of the country. Obtaining the support of France in 1404, he seized Carmarthen, but from that epoch his power declined. He died a I fugitive in 1415. Shakespeare bears flattering tes- timony to the valour of Glendower in the historical drama of Henry IV. where Hotspur, Earl of Percy, defends his brother Mortimer to the king. who accuses him of revolting against the English power. The passage is as follows:— "Revolted Mortimer! He never did fall off, my sovereign liege. But by the chance of war;—to prove that rrne, Xeeds no more but one tongue for all those wounds, t hose mouthed wounds, which valiantly he took, W hen, on the gentle Severn's sedgy hank, In single opposition, hand to hand, He did coninuiKi the best part of an hour In ('Hanging hai-diment with great Glendower. TJlrec tunes they breathed, and three time, did they drink, I poll agreement, of swift Severn's nood "W lio then atii-itrhted with their bloody looks, Kan leaifully among the trembling reeds, Aii'l hiti hi> oiisp head in the hollow hank Blood-stained with these valiant combatants. The Tliou dost belie him, Percy, thou dost belie him, Ik never did encounter with Glendower; J -ell thee, J1 e durst as well have met the fiend alone, As Owen Glendower for an enemy." r

Garibaldi's COWARDs,-On the following morn- ing an aide-de-camp informed Garibaldi that Bixio's division awaited him in the palace court-yard He descended, and we followed to listen to the report of the doings of that valorous division in the decisive battle of the 1st October. Drawn'up in battalions, they covered half of the immense cortile Garibaldi and Bixio. with their respective staffs, forming a tine group in the front. I was ordered to read the report, but my voice could not be heard beyond the second batiulion so the stentorian lungs of a brother officer were called into requisition. At first we listened with little interest to the usual accounts of special deeds of valour commented on and praised but when the page was turned, and we heard the names of five utticers branded as cowards, we were seized with painful stupor. But three of the five were present, and these were ordered to the front. It seemed to nee that the physical action of the thousand eyes bent ON them must petrify and root them to the spot and as they came up, all in the prime of youth', mv knees trembled and my heart beat with such violence that I was forced to lean upon my sword. Knowledge Dr the weakness of human nature, the belief that a sudden panic may assail even a brave man, the solemnity of the punishment, the inflexible severity of Garibaldi's face and bearing, filled me with anguish and pity. Better to die a thousand deaths than live to hear Garibaldi's lips pronounce the words, You are a coward. Yet the punishment was as necessary as it was terrible. Absolute silence reigned for a few seconds as the three culprits stood before him and the awe-struck battalions. Then turning from them with a lightning flash of scorn, he said to the marquis, "Take away their swords," and to Nullo, "Strip them of the emblems of their rank." T. disarmed them, while Nullo flung the torn silver bands to the ground. And the trio stood motionless, while Gari- oaldi, inspired by the situation, harangued the entire division with antique eloquence. Then turning to the three petrifactions, his hand uplifted as though invoking curses on their heads, he said, For you nothing is left but to beg for a musket and get killed in the foremost ranks." On the morrow, their names, dishonoured for ever, were published in the official gazette. The sensations left by that painful scene lasted for days, prolonged as they were by a repeti- tion, with less imposing forms, in the Dictatur's apartment, whence he expelled several officers who had iied from CN.serta at the sudden irruption of the Bourbon column which we had separated from the main body in Caserta Vecchi, on the 2nd October. —" ConUall Magazine" for March. 1

Progress i«s -v „ „ i, ° 1S now inscribed upon every thing material here—house-building street im- provements, a railway, and all its accompaniment* and the unprecedented influx of visitors as the natural sequence of rapid andebeap communication. Why should not the mental habits of the people be awakened with all this external activity. We do DOt believe that the inhabitants of Aberystwith have an aversion to lectures. We are convinced that if the lecturer were of known ability, the subject one of general interest, and the public well apprised of the meeting, we might reasonably expect a large attend- ance on such an occasion. We have heard the lecture on it Cartref y Gweitb- iwr," and therefore have had an opportunity of forming a dispassionate opinion concerning the treatment which the subject received. Apart from the established celebrity of the lecturer, we venture to state that the subject is worthy of the strictest attention of working men and their wives and chil- dren. Who is without an interest in making his home happy? While we frequently lament over the dissipation and recklessness of the British workman, the improvidence and carelessness of his wife in hundreds of cases, and the consequent neglect and depravity of the children of many a bard-working man, we rejoice to know that efforts are not wanted in Wales to ameliorate and bless the workman's home. The subject is one of deep interest to the philanthropist and to the statesman, and bears on the weal or woe of the land. Should any one succeed in expelling drunkenness, improvidence, dishonesty, and misery from only a single work- man's home, he would confer a blessing on society, and add to the sum total of human happiness. Could public men and the press persuade every workman in the land to love his home as his para- dise upon earth, and get every workman's wife to do her utmost to promote happiness under her own roof, untold blessings would at once descend upon the land. Poverty'would be diminished dissipated habits would cease; health would be promoted, life prolonged: crime would be stayed; while comfort and domestic happiness would arise as from the ashes of society, and there would be clearer ground for the dissemination and growth of the higher blessing of our common Christianity. I trust that the forthcoming lecture will produce a most salutary impression upon the workman and his home. Aberystwith, Yours, &c., March 22, 1865. THE Workman's FRIEND.
STREET NUISANCES.
STREET NUISANCES. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ABERYSTWITH OBSERVER. Sm.-As I have the moral courage to complain, I don't think you will lack the courage to publish my complaint, although it be made against a com- missioner. I am not one of those who consider that law-makers have the right to be law-breakers; Tn Jr r,consider that the town commisl B.oners ought to be governed by the Jaws they make themselves. Street nuisances have been blown up and cried down in th ecommissioners' meetings.- and very properly so, and yet a nuisance has been caused to exist close to my house, which for shame and indecency I have seldom seen equalled, by the direct act of a commissioner. This commissioner resides in Princess-street, and I am a close neigh- bour of his. This commissioner (vide the Observer) was gratuitously industrious some weeks ago in having a neighbour of his fined because a row occurred after twelve o'clock on a certain Saturday night, although the row. so far as I can judge by the evidence, could not possibly be prevented by the commissioner's neighbour so freely mulcted. The commissioner's reason for having a fine inflicted was that his neighbour's house was a nuisance to the neighbourhood. But was the nuisance of an unpreventible row equal to that for which this model commissioner must be held accountable, viz., that of emptying his dust-pit into the public street, and allowing it to lie there putrefying for days, im- pregnating the air with the most noxious and offen- sive stench, calculated in the greatest degree to engender disease, at a time, too, when sickness is so prevalent in our town ? This filth was onlv re- moved from the street by the strait-laced com- missioner on Friday morning, the 17th inst.. several persons having fallen over it, on their way along the street, in the darkness of tbe preceding nights. if T am called upon publicly to authenticate this letter, I shall most readily do so, with my full name and address, and, moreover, I can get other neigh- bours to vouch for the truth of my statements. SIR,-I request to draw the attention of house- holders in the town of Aberystwith to account of which I read in vour columns last week about the Lodginghouse-keep >r9 overcharging the strangers the cause why is the householders [landlords] over- charge them the houses which was £ 30 are j £ 60 now if the lodging housekeepers charged low they would never get money enough to liay their rent as it is so high so I do not see they charge high as was in your columns so the fault all lies on the house- holders for overcharging their tenants they see that strangers come here so fast in summer time so they all rose their rents what has the lodging housekeepers to do but rise theirs as well but mind von the meat will be cooked before long the house- holders will take a warning from these few lines I call the householders but Rogues.
