Dated the 13th day of January, 1869. THE SPECTATOR. INDEPENDENT LIBERAL NEWSPAPER Every Saturday, Price Gd., by Post 7d. The Proprietors, who in 1861 purchased the Spectator, have since that date conducted it them- selves. They are therefore exempted from many influences which press severely on the independence of journalism, and have from the first made it their chief object to say out what they believe to be truth in theology, politics, and social questions, irrespec tive not only of opposition from without, but of the opinion of their own supporters. Their object is to reflect the opinion of cultivated Liberals, but in the matter of the American War they fought against the mass of the very class they are trying to repre- sent, and were finally acknowledged by them to have been in the right. In politics the object of the Spectator is to maintain Liberal institutions every- where, that is, the right of free thought, free speech, and free action, within the limits of law, under every form of Government but, nevertheless, to maintain that in a free State the power of the whole commu- nity may be usefully employed in constructive enter- prise in theology, to maintain the views usually known as those of the Broad Church in ecclesias- tical affairs, to defend the inclusion within the Es- tablished Church of every variety of opinion consis- tent with belief in the divinity of Christ, and the right of the State to control the Church and in social questions, to urge the faith that God made the world for the people in it, and not for any race, class, colour, creed, or section, with all the conse- quences to which that principle leads. The journal commands the best sources of infor- mation, and has repeatedly during this year been the first to make the true bearing of events apparent to its readers. Its object, however, is not so much to supply news as to express the feeling of the edu- cated classes on the news, and correct that vagueness and bewilderment of thought which the constant receipt of news in little morsels has such a tendency to produce. Original papers supply comments critical and ex- planatory on Public Events, Political Appointments, Law Amendment, Commercial Affairs, Personal Incidents, and Theological Controversies. The News of the current week is compressed into animated narrative, which the laziest or busiest may read, without missiug the life or import of the events. Every important work is noticed as it appears, with a full and critical account, so as to let the reader know what the book is, what it tells, and what is its place among other books. Of nearly every work some report is given. Notice is also taken of the general course of Literature, its pro- gress, rights, tendencies, personal events, &c. The Spectator contains a List of all Books pub- lished during the week (not under one shilling in price), with the names of the publishers and the prices attached, a feature which will greatly increase its value to booksellers, librarians, literary institu- tions, and private gentlemen. FATAL GUN ACCIDENT. On Friday week a sad accident happened at Ty- nohir, near Machynlleth. Mr. Davies, of Rhiwlas, and Mr. M. Lewis, of Garthgwynion, were out shoot- ing, with Robert Roberts, one of Mr. Davies's ser- vants, When Roberts was accidentally shot by a charge from his master's gun. The gun had hung fire, and Mr. Davies was about examining- it, when the charge went off,and entered the unfortunate man's head, canning instant death. The inquest was held on Saturday, at Caedu, before D. R. Pughe, Esq., coroner; and the particulars will be learnt from the following evidence William Henry Davies said,— I live at Rhiwlas. The deceased was my servant. He was in his usual health and "pints yesierday (Friday) morning. He went out shooting with me about ten o'clock. We went towards Tynohir. We were at Tynohir about alf-past twelve, when the accident happened. Three of us were walking together, making for ano- ther place to look for some game, and in a corner of a field, where we were making for a gap, a hare got up close to us. I fired one barrel, and missed her, and attempted a second barrel the second barrel hung fire, and then went off in my hand. After hanging fire I was going to look what was the matter with the gun but before I got it down into a proper position it went off in my hand, and the first thing I noticed was, that Mr. Lewis had thrown his gun down, and rushed to the deceased, and then I rushed to him myself, and found a gunshot wound at the hack of the head. Mr. Lewis raised him in a sitting posture, and, seeing the wound, I told him to lay him down, as he appeared quite dead. I do not think he even breathed after we had got him down. There was no one else with us at the time. I stayed and watched him until Mr. Lewis went and got assistance. It was on the border of Cynffyrch and Tynohir. Maurice J. Lewis said,—I live at Garthgwynion. I was out shooting with Mr. Davies and his servant yesterday morning. We had been walking all Ihe morning about Tynohir and Cynffyrch, and about twelve o'clock we found ourselves on Cynffyrch land, on the border of Tynohir. A hare got up by the side of the hedge; she ran to meet us. Mr. Davies shot his first barrel at her, and, in trying his second barrel, Mr. Davies made the remark that his gun had hung fire. I saw the poor man stagger, and I put down my gun and ran to him immedi- ately, and got him into a sitting position as near as could be. I perceived where he was shot, and found the blood pouring all over my hands and clothes. When I was perfectly satisfied he was dead, I went off for assstance. I went to Tynohir for a cart, and got the body conveyed to this house. I heard Mr. Davies say his gun had hung fire, and saw his gun as if it had jumped in hie hand. I did not see the charge go off, as I was too attentive to the hare myself. I was aiming at the hare myself, and tried to shoot her but the cap snapped, and the charge did not go out of the gun. Hugh Lloyd said,—I am a surgeon, practising at Machynlleth. I have examined the body of de- ceased, and find a very large wound under and be- hind the left ear, evidently a gunshot wound. A portion of the lower part of the ear had been shat- tered, and, on examining the wound, I found that a portion of the bone behind the ear had been frac- tured, hut not, in my opinion, so as to communicate with the brain. On probing this wound I found that it communicated with the mouth. The course of the wound was back and towards the upper part of the spine and my belief is, that the cause of death was serious injury to the spiual cord. It was not injured by the shot, but from the violence of the shock and concussion, which was quite sufficient to cause immedia'e death. A verdict of" Accidental death was returned. The deceased was a single man, about twenty- seven years of age, and a native of Bala.— Os. Ad. >

THE WELSH CALVINISTIC METHODISTS AND THE RECEST ELECTION.-A "Welsh Calvinistic Metho- dist" writes to the Editor of the Guardian as fol- lows;— "Sir,— The Welsh Calvinistic Methodists have lately been broueht into invidious notice in consequence of the fanatical or ugly expressions which, it is alleged, some of their preachers used during the recent election. Will you allow a mem- ber of that connexion to say a word on its behalf? I do not mean to call in question the accuracy of your correspondents' statements, though I do not believe that any of the ministers with whom I hap- pen to be acquainted would be capable of uttering the abominable words which are laid to some ones' charge in reference to the Established Church. Neither do I intend pleading a tu quoque, though the ribald scoffs of such a paper as the Rock are sufficient to substantiate that kind of plea. But just as it would be unfair to suspect the clergy ge- nerally of ungentlemanly conduct because a few Church papers are foul-mouthed, would it not be equally unfair to condemn the Calvinistic Metho- dists as a denomination for the foolish and ignorant fanaticism of a few preachers? I firmly believe that the great majority of our ministers are Chris- tian gentlemen, and have too much self-respect, let alone religion, ever to demean themselves by throw- ing dirt at the Establishment. It is true—I confess it with shame-that our pulpits are not yet entirely closed to ignorance and stupidity. But it has been for many years the aim of constant and strenuous efforts on the part of our connexion to raise the standard and tone of its ministry; and I venture to think that even at present our pulpit will fairly bear comparison, in point of learning, with that of the Establishment in the Principality, and in theological learning and preaching ability surpass it. I do not say this invidiously, hut with a view of showing that it would be unjust to condemn the whole body for the bigotry and ignorance of a few, who belong to a class which is dying away. No candid Church- man or Dissenter will refuse to confess that the feet ol his own golden-headed imfige-mulier formosa superllè-are of sordid day. 1 n conclusion, permit me to acknowledge the impartiality and gentlemanly spirit which always characterizes the Guardian, and to subscribe myself."

♦ MR. H. RICHARD, M.P.,ON THE BALLOT, AND THE WELSH ELECTIONs.-At a meeting in favour of the ballot, held in London last week, Mr H. Richard said:—"There was no other question on which the arguments were so much on one side as that of the ballot. The objections urged against it were singu- larly weak, and many of the opponents stood self- convicted in doing in other directions that which the ballot would effect in the political world. In order to avoid slight social inconveniences, which were as dust in the balance compared with what working men and labourers must undergo if they attempted to act upon their own convictions, these aristocratic opponents of the ballot elected their club members by it. He was not sure we should not see the day when bishops were elected by ballot. (Laughter.) A very clever work had just been written by an Irish clergyman urging that in choos- ing a bishop, the custom of the New York d ocesan synod should be adopted, and the ballot used Some people asserted that the ballot was destructive of the dignity of human nature. (Laughter ) If some of the holders ot such an opinion could have seen the sights he saw in Wales during the late election, they would acknowledge there was an exhibition of hu- miliation and dishonour which ought to put them out of conceit for ever with the present system of open voting. He contended strongly for the ballot for Wales; for there was no part of the United Kingdom where it was more imperatively required. The great bulk of Welshmen were Nonconformists, and consequently Liberals. The great landed pro- prietors were Churchmen and Tories, who held very exalted notions in both capacities. As regarded religion, the people of Wales had once for all shaken off the yoke of the landlords after two centuries of persecution. It was not so in politics, although during the late elections they had returned 23 Liberal members out of 31 sent to the House of Commons by the Principality. The victories were gained in the teeth of much oppression and suffer- ing, and he believed if there were perfect freedom of election, there would not be a single Tory or doubtful Liberal returned from Wales. Therefore, he desired to see the ballot established. (Cheers.) He hoped this was the beginning of a victorious agitation throughout the entire country."
