To guard against this great evil, and to preserve the blessings of health, these pills are confidently and earnestly recommended. They act g-enerally on the constitution, cleanse the blood of ell impurities; regulate the secretions, and give tone to the stomach; correct the morbid condition of the liver, regulate the bowels, and, by removing all impediments, restore elasticity and vigour to the whole frame. DISTRICT INTELLIGENCE.
DISTRICT INTELLIGENCE. RAGLAN. TEA MEETING. —The members of the Baptist connexion held their annual Easter tea meeting on the evening of Monday last, when there were nearly 300 persons present. The repast, as on all former occasions, was excellent and well berved, reflecting much credit on those who under- took its preparation. The chapel was tastefully decorated with mottoes, wreaths of evergreens and flowers, and other ornamentations. Upon the removal of the trays the Rev. B. Johnson took the chair, and the more intellectual part of the proceedings was opened with praise, followed by. a brief prayer by Mr. Thos. Cobner, after which the chair- man addressed the meeting, in which he expressed his regret at the absence of several ministers who had been invited, but who were prevented attending through unavoidable causes. Mr. C. Forward, in answer to a call upon him, gave a brief address on the progress of religion and civilisition in this country generally, and especially in the immediate neighbourhood, during the last century, ob- serving that there was a great contrast between the state of things now and what existed even at the time he first came to reside in the neighbourhood, as shewn by the in- telligence, manners, and habits of the people, the increase and toleration of disaent among the inhabitants, the dis- semination of religious instruction by means of the great number of books and publications that were in cir- culation among the inhabitants generally. The speaker concluded by exhorting- his hearers to persevere in the great work in which they were engaged, and to take courage from past successes. Mr. Thos. Cobnor followed in a similar strain, giving many facts from his experience and personal observation of the origin, rise, and ultimate success of the Baptif church in Raglan, ranging over a period of more than 40 years. The Rev. Mr. Smith, Mon- mouth, gave the concluding address, in which he urged professors of religion to be mindful of their duties, to use christian admonition, and to distribute good books, tracts, &c., amongst friends, relatives, and acquaintances. The Benediction brought the meeting to a successful termina- tion. TRR NATIONAL SCHOOL. —The Rev. Mr., Ferguson the Diocesan Inspector, officially visited this school on the 13th inst. He expressed himself highly satisfied with the con- duct of the school and the attainments of the children, particularly specifying the improvement in their religious knowledge since his last visit. There are 131 scholars on the registers. EASTER. parish church on Sunday last pre- sented a gay and pleasing appearance, being tastefully and artistically decorated throughout the interior. Amongst the principal decorations was a cross over the Communion table, formed of evergreens and flowers, having on the one side an emblem of eternity, and on the other an emblem ol the trinity. The baptismal font, too, was beautifully decorated with wreaths of evergreens and flowers. The services, both morning and evening, were attended by a great number of per.-ons. RAGLAN AND TRELLECK HIGHWAY BOARD. This Board met at the Beaufort Arms Hotel, on Wed- nesday, the 12th inst., there being present S. R. Bosan. quet, Esq. (chairman), Mr. John Gunter (vice-chairman), J. A. Herbert, Esq., T. P. P. Marsh, Esq., and Messrs. Thos. Williams (Wernymelin), Amos Lewis, Joseph Frost, Charles Forward, Thos. Davies, John Morgan, Job Jones, John Evans, Joseph Williams, Benjamin Ellaway, James Williams, William Williams, Philip Jones, William Big- ham, and Francis Davies. The first business brought before the meeting was the appointment of wardens for those parishes in the district where the elections had not been in conformity with the order of quarter sessions, and for which purpose a petty sessions had also been held in the same room on the pre- vious day. A petition was presented, signed by the vicar ot the parish of Tregare, Mr. T. P. P. Marsh, and other ratepayers, praying that Mr. Joun Jones may be appointed as warden for that parish. Mr. Thomas Williams (Werny- melin), explained that he had been unanimously elected at a vestry meeting called for the purpose, and that those persons whose names appeared on the petition were pre- sent at the time. Mr. J. A. Herbert said be thought, under the circumstances, that Mr. Williams ought to have the appointment, he being the person whom it appeared the ratepayers wished to serve the office. The chairman having also expressed himself in favor of Mr. Williams, his appointment was accordingly declared, to which Mr. T. P. P. Marsh was the only dissentient. The Clerk having read over the minutes of the last meeting, which were duly confirmed, Mr. Forward raised the question of the legality of Mr. Bosanquet's appoint- ment as chairman of the Board; a short discussion ensued upon the subject, during which the chairman and others held that a meeting could rescind any resolution which had been passed at the same sitting. The minute of Mr. Bosanquet's appointment was also read, which conclusively proved his election by the former meeting to have been bona fide. All preliminaries having been completed, the following resolutions were passed:- Resolved-" That in future the Board meet for business alternately at the Beaufort Arms Hotel, Raglan, and the Crown Inn, Trelleck." Resolved—"That the Clerk to the Board send notice of attendance, by printed circular, to the waywardens, 10 days before all ordinary, and 7 days before all extraordinary meetings." Resolved-" Tbat a tin box be purchased for the use of the Board." Resolved—" That four waywardens, in addition to the chairman and vice-chairman, be nominated to sign all orders, cheques, and precepts of the Board—viz., Mr. James Williams, Trelleck, Mr. John Evans, Trelleck Grunge, Mr. Charles Forward, Raglan, and Mr. Thomas Williams, Tregare-the said orders, cheques, and precepts to be coun- tersigned by the Clerk." The Board next proceeded to the election of a Surveyor for the district, for which office there were seven appli- cants, nearly all of whom were strongly recommended by testimonials of a first-class character, the only two candi- dates, however, who were put into nomination, were Mr. Joseph Williams, of the Court House, Llanvihangel Tory- mynydd, and Mr. Edward Arnold, of Llanishen. The votes were, for Mr. Williams 11, and for Mr. Arnold 5, and the former was therefore duly elected. The Surveyor having tendered sureties, to the amount of £ 100, they were accepted, and the Board consented to allow him to keep the farm he now holds on condition that he took no part in its management. The names of the Treasurer's sureties were handed in and approved of. The Surveyor was directed to make an estimate of the mileage of roads belonging to the district, in a month, and to give in detail the particulars of the roads in each parish, such as required repair-tbose usually repaired, and those not usually repaired. All parishes having surplus funds in hand were ordered to pay the same to the district Treasurer. The Chairman said he was in hopes that the expenses of each parish would be kept within the usual limits, and that the Surveyor's salary would be saved bv improved management, and improved roads, and he reminded the Board that each parish now, as before, would have to bear the cost of its own roads. The next meetings of the Board were fixed to be held at Trelleck, on Friday, May 5th; and at Raglan, on Friday, May 19th, each to commence at two p.m. Other District Intelligence on 8th Page.
