INFORMATION FOR MARINERS AND ADVENTURERS IN SEAKCH OF GUANO.—We have been favoured by Captain Pringle, of the Plata, lately arrived from BuenOs Avres, ivith the following extract from his log-book On Monday, April 21. at seven, a.m., made St. Paul's Island. In lat., by observation, 0 54 N., long. 29 15 W., there ire five rocks, with gaps between them: the largest having a peak, similar to a sugar loaf, on the north-east end, and the south end, not quite so high, being flat withal. I tried for soundings, at half-past seven, the island bearing south two miles, and no bottom at one hundred fathoms. I saw a flag hoisted upon it at eight, a.m. I tacked and stood to the southward again, sup- posing by that some vessel had been wrecked, and that a half mile, then hoisted the boat out, and sent 1\Ir. Marshall, chief mate, to ascertain what the cause was. He ascended the summit and found the flag to be a piece of canvass hoisted on a pole, and at the foot a bottle, with a note, of which the following is a copy :—' Barque John, St. Paul's Island, Friday, 17th April, 1845. To ship- masters of vessels. I got here this day, and there is no guano, so you must all proceed to where your letter in- structions order you, as this was the last place to where I was to proceed for guano. For your government, I have to say that I heard that freights round the Horn are C5. and E6. per ton. When any one reads this, please place it back again in the bottle. Whoever has orders for me, he will please send it from the first port he arrives at, addressed, Mr. Colin Campbell, 48, Queen-street, Glasgow." Wishing you all a prosperous voyage and good freights, I am yours, in poor spirits (signed) Oliver Campbell, agent for Downie and Ackerman.' My chief mate, supposiug the date of the year to be 18tl instead of 1845, as the latter appeared to be more like figure 1 than figure 5, that being so long ago he thought it no longer necessary to leave the bottle on the island, but brought it on board, and I have it now in my possession. He also took the flag down as I desired him to do, before he left the vessel, if no one were upon the island, as it would deceive other vessels that saw it. When I received the note I discovered by appearance it had been but lately written, and that the figure was intended for five. There .was also another mistake: it was dated Friday, the 17th April; now Friday was the 18th April this year. The vessel being at too great a distance to send it back, and the breeze increasing, I did not do so. I lost four hours of a fair wind by this, and no advantage whatever to myself, only to help any of my fellow-creatures who might have been there, as I supposed by seeing the flag. I consider it in night time very dangerous, untese there is a good look-out, as it is low, and cannot be seen during the day and clear weather more than eight or nine miles. The mate sounded at about thirty yards from the shore, north-west end, and had fifty-five fathoms hard bottom, and fifteen fathoms a boat's length from the shore. Where they landed it is a very low, barren, and desolate place, no vegetation whatever; found a number of birds and a quantity of eggs, of which they brought some on board, about the size of a duck's egg. There was no fresh water to be found. The island lies about north. east by north, and south-west by west, by compass, half a mile, and about a quarter of a mile east and west, lat. 0 52 north, and long. 29 14 west.
