In you, Sir, we know there are combined all those generji qualifications which constitute a most efficient, and valuable Member of the House of Commons. Able as a Speaker—Practical, as a Man of Business—Expe- rienced in Public Affairs, and unflinching in attachment to ihe<*reut principles of our time-honoured Constitution, we shall esteem ourselves most fortunate in securing you as our Representative in Parliament. GENTLEMEN, A VACANCY having occurred in the Representation of our County by the deeply-lamented death of our late estimable and invaluable Representative, Mr. BAILEY, I am induced by the expression of what. would appear to be the prevailing wish among you, and by the very flattering Requisition which has been presented to me, to offer myself as a Candidate for the high henour of suc- ceeding him. I have refrained thus long from declaring my readiness and desire to serve you, solely from considerations of respect for the memory of one whom you all revered. My Political Sentiments have been long before you. I have carried them without disguise, and I have aimed to do so without offence by them my public conduct has been and will be steadily guided, should I be honoured by your choice. I shall ever be found to maintain the just Prerogatives of the Crown, as affording the best se- curity for the Liberties of the People; and while firmly guarding our free civil and religious Institutions, and protecting our Domestic Industry against unfair and unequal foreign competition, I shall endeavour, not reck- lessly to stimulate, but prudently to extend and improve our National interests and advantages, and to make at once a determined stand against the sacrifice and ruin of these to the false and suicidal policy of mis-called Free Trade, and to secure for our native Agricultural Capital and Labour justice and fair play. On the great questions of Popular Education, and Local and General Taxation and Expenditure,—on our Foreign and Domestic Policy,—and on all other matters affecting the welfare and happiness of the community at large, I must claim for myself, what I am sure you will readily concede to me, the unfettered exercise of my free and independent judgment and discretion; pro- mising you the best application of these to your local and general interests, and trusting that I shall ever be found their firm and faithful guardian, should I attain the high honour to which your kindness induces me to aspire. It would ill become me to comment upon the far too flattering opinions which in your Requisition are ex- pressed towards me: in thus, however, accepting it, and obeying the call which you have made upon me, permit me to say that 1 do so with feelings of the deepest grati- tude and that I have the honour to be, Gentlemen, Your faithful and devoted Servant, THOMAS WILLIAM BOOKER.
