ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1852, we OPENED the above-named Premises for the establishment of a TEA AND COFFEE TRADE, and we beg to submit this announcement, to the Nobility, Gentry, Clergy, and Families in Cardiff, and throughout the Principality. In introducing ourselves to your notice as New Com- petitors, and as the Proprietors of an Establishment to be conducted in many respects on a principle different to any other in the locality, we shall briefly state the SYSTEM we propose to adopt, in business, and the MEANS by which that system can be most successfully maintained. The Principle we have adopted as a basis is to sell by RETAIL for Ready Money, Teas, ColFees, Spices. &c.. at the usual WHOLESALE Prices, and in many instances of qualities not to be obtained in the vicinity, thus placing you at once upon a footing equally advantageous in the purchase of those articles with the Inhabitants of the Metropolis. CARDIFF, unquestionably one of the most, flourishing Towns in the United Kingdom, pirsents in no portion of its Commerce more room for advantageous cumpditinu at the present moment thau in the TEA TRADE; and im- piessed with this conviction WE slart with the determina- tion of supplying the Inhabitants of this Town and Neighbourly od with Teas on better terms than they have previously obtained IHT-m, and of selling: the BEST- SELECTED QUALITIES AT A GREAT REDUCTION ON TIIE rRICES USUALLY PAID. No other article of popular requirement is more closely identified with our social liabils aud domestic enjoyments than TEA. The preference for it as au evening refresh- ment is prominent in this countrv and its dependencies; the circumstances and habits of all classes have made it almost one of the NECESSARIES OF SUBSISTENCE and there is every reason to .believe that if the present duty of 2s. 21,1. per lb. were reduced to Is. many who are now comparatively strangers to the use of the article would become familiarized to its consumption. To be enabled to purchase it in its PURE STATE, of STERLING QUALITY, and at a MODERATE PGICE, are mat- ters of the FIRST consequence to every consumer. With ample resources at command, experience to gtil(ie US in the selection of our Teas, and spirit, enough to VEND them at a SMALL PROFIT, we commence this undertaking, and by conferring upon us your support you will 4ive permanence and stability TO our enterprise, whilst we in return will guarantee to secure to you what we have before intimafed, viz.,—ADVANTAGES PREVIOUSLY RA- STRICTKD TO THE LAUGF.ST LOS DON HOUSES. The same plan adopted with regard to Tea, viz., a careful seleciioa of those kinds most desirable for Family consumption will also be applied to COFFEE. The repeated reductions of Duty with which this arti- cle has been favoured have, as might reasonably he ex- pected, resulted iu au increased use of the bevcra-e, and noiv that we are approaching !1 crisis in the HISTORY of the CO flee Trade which involves very important consi- derations to evcr purchaser, IT may not be uninteresting to oil, er a few remarks as a guide to those who may facor ItS with their patronage. The serious diminution which is stated to have occur- red to the Revenue of late years in consequence of the adulteration of Coffee with Chicory, has induced Her Majesty's Governmentto rescind the TREASURY MINUTE OF AUGUST, 1840, which legalized first the admixture and then the sule of the two articles. Henceforth they must he sold separateiy, and whatever may be the effect ol the Order in a financial point of view it will un- douba-'dly tend to place the Coffee Trade upon a fair and legitimate basis and prove a safeguard against much im- position and dishonesty. V» e are well aware of the strong prejudice that exists ill many minds it, favour of Chicory, and hence in selling Genuine Ground Coffee we expect to meet with many difficulties. Ultimately however we believe Genuine Coffee will lie fully appre- ciated but to those who cannot reconcile themselves to its use immediately, we shall recommend the addition of Chicory which we shall keep of the BEST QUALITY, only in the way that the Act of Parliament directs, viz., in i'ackets of 2 OZ., and upwards. To those who wish to purchase Coffee in its NATIVE PURITY, in possession of its NATURAL AROMA & FRAGRANCE, and at those ECONOMICAL rraccs which Families who buy for Cash have a fair claim to expect, we recommend the following selection:- s. d. Good Ceylon Coffee OIL 1 ine Plantation 1 0 FINEST PLANTATION 1 2 recommended. FINEST MOUTH AMERICAN,or COSTA RICA 1 4 recommended. CnOICE JAMAICA & .MOCHA.. 1 0 highly recommended. I To prevent mistakes by persons who may be sent for our Tea and Coffee the price of each article will be marked with red pencil on the inside wrapper. In c:>nclus',on we respectfully so!icit a TKI.VI, from ALL those iu!o whose hands this address may come, for with- out this you cannot judge of the sincerity of our pro- fessions. We are anxious that they should be tested at once, feeling conli.eut that we have advanced none that we are NOT prepared to bring into immediate actum. As we have Uelore hinted tlie i:ic.ie isiug prosperity of Car- diff, and the absence of a Tea Establisaien t founded, upon .Metropolitan principles liuve pointed tlie way for us. C beg you tu teuiemhr-r that nothing infuses more life into Commerce tiian healthy and vigorous competition, and provided it be honourably CONDUCTED NOTHING is more conducive to the interests of toe Pubiic.
