METROPOLITAN CATTLE MARKET LONDON, MONDAY, August 6.-The lupply of foreira stock on sale here to-day was tolerably extensive and in fair condition. Most of the French beasts were very srood. Sriles progressed slowly. on rather easier term*. With home-fed beasts we were fairly supplied. The grass-fed stock came to hand in prime condition. The arrivals from Ireland and Scotland were very limited. For all breeds the demand was in a sluggish state, at a decline in the quotations compared with Monday last of 2d per Sib. The extreme top price was 5s 6d per Bib. The arrivals from Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire, amounted to about 1,300 shorthorns from other psrts of England, 600 of various breeds, from Scotland, 49 Scots and crosses; and from Ireland, 50 oxen, &c. The show of English sheep was tolerably good, and most breeds were very prime. Downs and half-breds, in- cluding prime Leicesters, &c, moved off freely at fully last week's currency but most other breeds were a slow inquiry, on former terms. We had a dull trade for lumhs-t,he supply of which was on the increase—on lower tt'rms. viz, from 6* 8d to 7s 8d per SIb. THE FIGHT FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP. In the figrht for the championship, on Monday morning, Mace beat his opponent in 21 rounds, which occupied about thirty minutes. After the first round Mace had all the advantage. (TOSS was most severely punished, and Mace scarcely hurt. Owing to the sham fight which took place on the last occasion the present affair has excited comparatively little interest. MONCK. 'Ottawa, August 1.' THE EVACUATION OF ROME BY THE FRKNCH TROOPS.—The complete fulfilment of the convention between France and Italy, setting the withdrawal of the French troops from Rome, is anxiously looked for by statesmen and diplomatists. Most of them are inclined to think that the final evacua- tion of Rome by tie French is not to take place without certain compensations having been pre- viously given to France by Italy; however, the unanimous opinion among them is that the evacu- ation will put to the severest test the sincerity and disinterestedness of France towards Italy. It is almost universally believed that the departure of the last of the French troops from Rome is to take place on the 15th of September next. It is an erroneous notion. According to the above men- tioned convention the occupation of Rome by the French terminates only on the 15th December next. Thus, if it is really intended at Florence not to disband the Garibaldian volunteers until the French shall bavetevacuated Rome that revlutionary element will have to be kept up for several months after peace. We understand that the Pope's health is again in a precarious state. Z5 IMPORTANT TO THE PuBHC.—Po!SONED PICKLES AJi. THE CHOLERA.-At the Clerkenwell Police Court a respectably-dressed man attended before the sitting magistrate to lay before him a state- ment of facts in connection with mixed pickles and the cholera which are of interest to the public. He stated that a day or so since his servant fetched from a shop in his neigbbourbood some mixed pickles, the tradesman stating when he supplied them to her that they were very fine and fresh, he having opened a fresh jar to serve them. When he (the speaker) saw the pickles be did not like the look of them, and refused to partake of any. His wife and servant, however, ate them, and shortly after were attacked with choleraic diarrbcea, their mouths becoming very sore. A surgeon was sent for, and when he arrived he at once asked if the parties had been eating mixed pickles. He was answered in the affirmative, and be then said that his patients' mouths were poisoned, and that that was about the ninth or tenth case of the kind he had attended under similar circumstances. From what he (the speaker) tad gathered it appeared that when the ordinary pickles were bad, and often they were putrid, they were placed in a tub mixed with turmeric and mustard, and were then sold as piccalilly. To ascertain if that kind of pickle was better at one shop than another, he had purchased samples from no less than twelve different shops, and in each instance he bad found that the pickle was putrid. His object in attending before the court was to obtain the assistance of the press in making these facts known, as from what the surgeon had informed him there could be but very little doubt that the eating of such messes as were sold for sound pickles was the cause of much of the diarrhoea and the cholera that was now pre-. vailing in the metropolis. He had communicated with the sanitary authorities of the parish in which he resided, and they had promised to see to the matter. The Magistrate said he bad no doubt but that the press would notice the matter and the visitor then left the court.

AMERICA. (BY ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH.) NEW YORK, July 30. The following telegram was received by Reuter's Telegram Company (Limited) at 9 50 p.m. on the 3d of August from Mr R. A. Glass:- NEW YORK, Aug. 1. London advices of Monday are published here. A riot took place in New Orleans on Monday in consequence of the re-assembling of the Conven- tion of 1864. Thirty-one negroes and one white man were killed, and several white men wounded. Advices have been received here from San Fran- cisco to the 31st of July. The steamer Constitu- tion sailed on the 30th for Panama with 1,162.000 dollars in gold for New York. The success of the Atlantic Telegraph cable was known in San Francisco. Lieutenant-General Sherman received his new commission to-day. Mr Jefferson Davis has bad a consultation with his counsel upon his line of defence. General Terry has ordered the discontinuance of all military organizations or assemblies among the artisans, white or black, in the depnrtreent of Vir- ginia during the existence of martial law. President Johnson has permitted the assembly of the Texan Legislature. In the Canadian Parliament yesterday the report on the state o the militia, including the military report of the commander, during the Fenian raid Z, was presented, and also the report of the court- martial for the investigation of the conduct of certain officers during the engagement at Bridge- r, water. President Perse (?) has been re-elected in Peru. New Zealand and Australian dates of June 24 have been received by steamer at Panama. Quiet is now restored at New Orleans. WOODEN SHIPs.-The engagement of Lissa (says the Paris journal Liberie) has given a great lesson in the art of naval war. Here, as in America, three systems of naval construction were pitted against each other, viz., wooden vessels, iron- clads, and those with towers. The Affondatore of the last named system has yielded to the shock of the wooden ships, as did the Confederate rams upon the occasion of the attack on Mobile. Twelve Italian iron-clads retired before seven Austrian ones after sustaining considerable damage. Let us add, too, that the Austrian squadron included an old frigate the Novara, which, under the orders of M. de Vullenstorf, recently made a scientific voyage of circumnavigation. This vessel, which had been pre- viously half destroyed by fire and just repaired, did its duty well. However, from whatever cause, the wooden fleet has withstood the attack of the heavy ironclads, armed according to the new system, and has most assuredly stood against them. Will, there- fore, the American monitor and the wooden s',ip be retained as the type of vessels of war ?

Chatham TAXATION IN AMERICA.—Some idea may be formed of the enormous taxes now paid on farming lands in the United States, from the following in- stance, brought to our notice by a gentleman in Toronto, who owns a farm in Michigan, about forty-five miles from Detroit :-His farm consists of 120 acres of arable and 60 acres of bush land, his stock of 150 sheep, three span of horses, and some eight or ten head of horned cattle. Upon this property last year his taxes were 110 dollars and this rate of taxation is about the same as that levied in the States of New York, Ohio, Penn- sylvania, &c., &c. Now, the taxes on a similar amount of property and stock in the county of York, in Western Canada, would be only 20 dol- lars. What a difference!

THE LONDON MARKETS. CORN EXCHANGE. MARK-LANB, MOMDAV, Aug. 6.- There was a short supply of wheat from Essex and Kent this morning; that of barley, beans, and peas was very limited with arrivals of English and Scotch oats, and none from Ireland. The imports of foreign wheat and barley were good; those of oats immense; with a moderate quantity of flour. The weather throughout the past week was wet and dry alternately, yet some quan- tity of core was cut in the early districts, but thrashing in the fields suspended and some stacked in consequence. Yesterday was showery, and this morning is wet and unsettled. Wind SW. English wheat met a slow sale at the full prices of last Monday for all fine qualities. The demand for foreign wheat was in retail, and prices were quite as high, some holders requiring an advance, which cheeked business. Town-made flour was unal- tered. Country marks were firm at previous rates. French qualities were steady in value. Barley was in good request for grinding, and prices were well supported. Malt met a fair demand at very full prices for the best qualities. The quantity entered for exportation during the month of July, free of duty, was 6,816 quarters. Beans were unaltered in price. Peas met a good inquiry at quite as high rates. The extent of business transacted in oats was moderate the buyers succeeded in obtaining all vorts at a reduction of 6d per quarter. The imports of July were 296,799 quarters, and those of the week were extremely large, amounting to 134,814 quarters, Linseed wall quite as dear. New English rapeseed was held with more firmness. Trefoil was stead- in value and demand. In cloverseed not much passing, and prices were nominally the same as last week. BRITISH. Shillings per Qr.
