Personal Notes. The Rev. D. J. Davies, son of the late Mr. Davies, Tyllwyd, Llanwrda, has been unanimously elected chairman both for the Board of Guardians and the District Council of Billericay, Essex, as well as Justice of the Peace for the county. He combines with it the care of a parish and the duties appertain- ing to the office of a diocesan, inspector of Schools, and rural dean in the Diocese of St. Albans. He received his early training at Llandovery and was for some time Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Mr. D. S. Davies, of the firm of Pugh Davies & Co., Manchester, one of the recently created magis- trates of that city is a native of Llandovery. He served his apprenticeship as a draper in his native town and about 16 years ago in conjunction with Mr. J. S. Pugh he commenced business under the title of Pugh, Davies & Co., which is now one of the leading firms in Manchester. He has been a president of the Manchester Cymru Fydd Society from its formation. Mrs. Davies is the daughter of Mr. Thomas Gee, of Denbigh. The numerous London friends of Miss Gertrude Hughes, the popular and talented young soprano, will no doubt be glad to know that at the recent competition for the Rutson Memorial Prize at the Royal Academy, she was highly complimented upon her charming voice and her magnificent render ing of the test pieces from Handel's Hercules. Fiom the provincial press we gather that Miss Hughes has been fulfilling several im- portant engagements in Wales during the Christ- mas vacation. At Morriston, she gained a con- spicuous success and was encored no less than four times. At the Rhyl Grand Pavilion, where she appeared on Boxing Day, in company with Miss Evangeline Florence and other eminent artistes, Miss Hughes became an undoubted favourite and was accorded a most enthusiastic reception. Her rendering of the Recit and Aria, I will extol Thee and The Holy City (the latter in Welsh) being rapturously applauded. She was also par- ticularly happy in her artistic rendering of Gounod's charming composition, Entreat me not to leave Thee," for which as well as for each of her con- tributions she was demonstratively recalled. Miss Hughes is undoubtedly making rapid progress and we heartily wish her every success.
