T,he J^elt iehind the Qoiznter. Moved by a legitimate desire to escape the scanty livelihood offered by a poor soil and greedy land- lords in our native country, and possessing a lively ambition to rise in the world; we find the youth of Wales forming a large proportion of that huge army of some 100,000 human beings, that is made up of London shop-assistants. To them, the LONDON KELT will make a special appeal. Their position is generally a hard one. Filled with a spirit of sturdy independence, which augurs well for the future of our country, they have, often, to bear patiently the never-ending audacity of persons in power. Deprived of the comforts and influences of home, and huddled together in the modern barracks of commerce, they suffer keenly from the mental de- pressions, that so readily overcome the highly sensi- tive nature of the Kelt. Separated from each other by long distances, and thereby, denied the helpful intercourse with their fellow-countrymen, there is naturally a tendency to lose that lively sympathy with national aspirations, and that active interest in the affairs of their people, which we consider of the highest importance to cherish, and cultivate, at the present juncture in the history of our country. The Welsh churches have done great and noble work to meet this want, but much remains to be done which does not come within the sphere of their activity. The KELT, it is hoped, will supplement that work, by making itself an additional bond of association between our scattered countrymen in the metropolis; and by offering an always-open channel, to com- municate to each other, our national hopes and interests. There is a dawn of a new life breaking over Wales, and we want its throb to be felt by her sons
