tftxfdd in the QoZZeges. The Cambridge Gomeriaid Society held its first meeting, for the term, on Friday last (Jan. 25), at the President's rooms, 4, King's Parade, when Mr. W. Jenkyn-Jones, B.A., Gonville and Caius College, read a paper on the Depopulation of Rural Wales." In the course of his remarks, the reader deplored the steady emigration of the rural popu- lation of Wales into the large towns of England and South Wales, and in the first part of his paper he reviewed the causes which led to this result. He said that the great improvement in education which had been experienced in Wales was a potent factor in increasing the rate of emigration, for whilst the Welshman was a monoglot, there was of necessity a difficulty in the way of his emigrating into England or any other foreign country. An attempt was made some thirty years ago to overcome this difficulty by establishing a Welsh colony in Pata- gonia, but this could hardly be termed a success, as the total number of colonists did not exceed 2,000. The reader next referred to the large numbers of agricultural labourers who were drawn to the mines of Glanmorgan and S.E. Carmarthenshire, and retailed a conversation he had with an old farmer in Cardiganshire. This old gentleman promptly gave the cause of the depopulation of his parish as balchder y bobl, a slavri r gwaith," but, as Mr. Jones said, the pride was the legitimate one of self- respect. People of average intelligence could hardly be expected to remain on the soil so long as' no inducement was held out to them of bettering them- selves, and where the only prospect was 6 one of unremitting toil, recompensed by the very barest of bare living wages." In conclusion, the reader said that although the Parish Councils could do much to alleviate the evil, yet stricter measures must be taken before it can be entirely abated. A discussion followed, in which Mr. T. S. Roberts, B.A. (St. Peter's), Rev. Evan Jones, B.A. (Christ's), Mr. F. J. Key, B.A. (Peterhouse), and the Secretary took part. A vote of thanks proposed by Mr. T. S. Roberts, and seconded by Mr. V. S. Jones (King's), was cordially carried. Before terminating, the society listened to some excellently-rendered songs by the President, J. Griffiths, M A., M.D., &c. (King's), Rev. Mr. Evans (Fishguard), Messrs. T. S. Roberts and D. Williams (Magdalene).

We are informed on good authority that Mr. Bowen Rowlands, Q.C., M.P., will not seek re-election for Cardiganshire at the forthcoming dissolution.
