THE ROYAL VICTORIA HALL, A WELSH NIGHT. On Thursday Feb. 27th, a special Welsh Night Concert was given at this Hall, when several well known Kymric vocalists took part. The programme was a most attractive one and undoubtedly a popular event as the building was crammed by an enthus- iastic and appreciative audience, and considering the counter attraction at Holborn Town Hall, it was surprising where the vast Welsh audience came from. Although it was announced as a Welsh Night it was somewhat strange that only Mr. Herbert Emlyn sang in the vernacular, and the ovation that followed each song fully showed the interest taken by those present both in Welsh music and in one of Gwalia's sweetest tenors. Mr. Emlyn was in excell- ent form and had to respond to a double encore, after Gwlad y Delyn and "By hen Gymraeg." The Queen's Glee Singers who consisted of Messrs. Edward Owen, Dyfed Lewys, S. Masters and Barry Lindon, were also well received and gave some splendid renderings, although, had they selected a Welsh song instead of the English version of Haul Away (Dr. Parry), it would no doubt have taken better. Mr. Barry Lindon was in fine form and had to respond with Big Ben," Mr. Dyfed Lewis gave an Italian song, while Miss Meredith Elliott rendered the Welsh air Ash Grove and other songs in an excellent manner. Mr. John Thomas the Queen's harpist, gave some charming selections on the harp and accompanied the vocalists in some of the airs. Among the other artistes were Madame Emily Squire, Mr. Douglas Powell and Mr. S. Masters.
