North versus South' THE ASSOCIATION ELEVEN FOR SOUTH WALES. Gossip on the Approaching International Matc. and the Changes in Each of the Teams. The South Wales v. Gloucestershire match at Cardiff on Wednesday was not productire o such interest as might have been the case had the ground been in a. more favourabl condition for play. On a cast-iren field it is hardly to be expected that the players on either side would run many risks in the way of extra exertion, but, still, the play afforded conclusive preof that the Socker game in South Wales has several very able ex- ponents in their class. No one will even pretend to suggest that the eleTen that met Gloucester- shire were anything like a representative team. Clearly they were not. There were one or two smart individuals, but beyond this the team was for the most part composed of promising men who, after a few matches in good company, might develop into smart players. On Wednesday, as I say, they showed promising individuality, but clearly wanted the rough corners polishing off them. The Gloucestershire team is one that, as elevens. go in this part of the country, is ac- counted decidedly smart. In my own mind' however, I have no doubt but that we could pick team from South Wales that would give them a real good beating. The custodian was smart, that is on Wednesday's play, but what he would have been had he experieneed half the amount of trouble from the South Wales forwards he ought to have done is another thing. Britton was the best of the backs easily I and kicked surely and with judgment. Of the forwards Fielding, Peacock, and Francis were fairly clever, but, as a whole, I was not parti- cularly impressed with their tactics in front of gool. They were loose and erratic, and the shooting was very wild indeed. The committee of the South Wales Associa- tion held their meeting after the match to select the team to represent the South on January 13. A letter from the parent body in the North ask- ing them to hold over the publication of the teams until the players of several Mid Wales clubs had been consideied was responsible for the selected eleven not appearing. These sort of matters, however, generally filter out, and I am assured on the most trust- worthy authority that the eleyen selected—of course, with the sanction to a cer" tain extent of the North Wales body-are as follow :—Goal, C. J. Morgan (Brecon) backs, W. G. Evans (Builth) and Jestyn Wil- liams (Cardiff) half-backs, F. Evans (Builth), F. Farthing (Cardiff), and H. A. Tapsfield (Car diff); forwards, right wing, John Woodfield (Cardiff) and R. A. Jonas (Swansea) centre, E G. Howell (Builth) left wing, F. Morris (Fair- water) and J. Woodfield (Cardiff). Now, whatever the Mid-Wales clubs may have in store for us, I don't think they are likely to provide much talent that can with advantage be made to replace any of the above. Forwar d half back, and in goal I don't believe the com mittee could have selected players more likely to have given general satisfaction or to prove themselves worthy of the trust reposed in them. Indeed, the team as a whole may not be cavilled at, and I have every confidence in their ability to uphold the reputatia?! of this portion of the Principality as a football com- munity. I have not, by the way, seen Evans, the Builth full back, perform, but I am led to believe that, to misquote BretHarte, for ways that are smart and tricks that are clever" commend me not to the Heathen Chinee, but to Walter Evans. The only objectionoI have heard urged against him is that he is a trifle slow, and on this point Barnes would, perhaps, have been the better man. The objection of the English Rugby Union to give the name of the reserve three-quarter who will figure in the English back line should Lockwood adhere to his determination not to play is, to say the least of it, a very absurd, not to say autocratic, proceeding. The officials seem to hug to themselves the opinion that they occupy a similar position to that of the Czar of that enlightened country Russia. To ask them the why and the wherefore is a crime evidently. They issue an edict- that is sufficient, and the general public-whe, by the way, pay for their fun-must take it with the same make-the-best-of-a-bad-job sort of a spirit as an Imperial ukase. We are not alto- gether what we might be perhaps in Welsh Wales, but II think we go one better in these matters than England. Saville, of Cheshire, who, by the way, I pointed out a few days ago was hardly likely to play, will probably be replaced by Murfitt, the West Hartlepoor flier. I find that the statement to the effect that J. Hannan of Newport did not intend to play for Wales against England on Saturday next was unauthorised. Hannan states that not only is he going to play, but that he never felt in better oondition in his life. I A Swansea correspondent writes Sir,-It is pleasing to find, vide the Northern critics, that M Cutcheon is going in all his old form. His kicking, running, and tackling in the Cheshire match left nothing to be desired. His try from the centre of the field is spoken of as being one of the best bite of play seen this season. He got a pass from Valentine in mid-field, and went off with all his old dash. He doubled magnificently, got clear from the opposing wing and full back, and running down the field out-paced everybody and scored behind the posts. I am glad to hear of that, for he and Gould will have to look after the most dangerous wing of English three-quarters. Firth and Hooper are the only scoring men in the English quartette, and as M'Cutcheon has never yet failed to score when opposed to Firth, it is to be hoped that he will not allow Saturday to be an exception. Hooper, who is left centre, is not Gould's class by any means; he runs strongly, but that is all. Apropos Firth, the Halifax three-quarter chosen to represent England on Saturday, he has played with Halifax, the Yorkshire cup- holders, for four years. Previous to that he was a member of the Brigliouse Rangers. In the season 1888-9 he played for his county, the principal match lie took part in being against Lancashire, when he played centre three>- quarter. The county committee were not satis- fied with his play in that position, but it never occurred to them to try him as a wing three-quarter until last season. Then he achieved considerable success in the five county matches in which he took part, namely, against Devonshire, Cheshire, Middlesex, Cumberland, and the Rest of England. He scored a try in the former and latter matches. He has played for his county in every match this season thus far, and his achievements have fully justified his selection for International honours. In addition he has scored ten tries for his own club in the fourteen matches he has taken part in. He is an excellent all-round player. His turn of speed is very fine; in fact, he has hardly an equal in that respect in the North of England. He is a splendid drop kick, tackles very securely, and can take and give a pass cleanly. The squabble between Mr. Hornby and the Corinthian Football Club is, like the poor, always with us. Even" Truth" goes out of its way this week to deal with the subject, and. concisely put, their argument is that Without bringing forward a single fact, Mr. Hornby repeats his old accusation, saying, besides, that he is still of opinion that a work- ing man who is paid for broken time is as much an amateur as one who receives hotel and travelling expenses. B'ut that opinion does' not require the imputations that he has made against the Corinthians to support it. The writer can scarcely believe that a gentle- man of Mr. Hornby's position could act as he has done unless he has, or believes he has, some facts to support the insinuations he has made. If he is possessed of such facte it is his duty for the sake of amateurs, to publish them at once." If it is only to give us a rest, 1 hope Hr. Hornby will explain. WELSH ATHLETE,

A PLUCKY WELSH LAD. Jason's Sole Survivor Says He Will Go to Sea Again. Samuel .Toshua Evans, the sole survivor of the crew of 26 of the ill-fated Greenock-o-wned ship Jason, which stranded on the Newfound- land Coast on December 5 last, arrived at his father's house, in the country parish of Tregai-e, situate between Raglan and Dingestow, in the eastern end of Monmouthshire, on Wed- nesday. after travelling all night from Liver- pool, via. Hereford and Monmouth. His father, the Rev. William Evans, is rector of Tregare, a rural, sparsely-populated parish, and his gmndfatner is the liev. Samuel Evans, vicar of Marshfield and Peterstone, near Cardiff. The welcome home given to the shipwrecked son, whose life had been so providentially spared, was of the most endearing character on the part of his parents. Young Evans, who is a well-grown fellow, within a couple of months of his nineteenth birthday, was edu- cated at Monmouth Grammar School, and was in his earlier youth a great favourite amongst the young folk in the neighbourhood. He evinced a liking for the sea after he left school, and became, three years and a half ago, an apprentice to the well-known firm of Car- michael, of Greenock. The general outlines and most of the details of the story of the loss of the Jason and the whole of her crew of 26, except Mr. Evans, have already appeared in the "Western Mail." To one of our repre- SAMUEL J. EVANS I sentatives the story was re-told on Wednesday, but the facts related were substantially those which have already been published. It was from the starting of the voyage at Barry, in April, 1892, until the final wreck in December, 1893, a most lamentable and calamitous affair, as the damage to the ship and loss of life at different stages of her passage showed. After undergoing repairs for about six months at Mauritius, necessitated by the damage done by the eve-lone in the Indian Ocean, about 40 days' sail out of Calcutta,, the ship proceeded with her cargo of jute for Boston, Mr. Evans acting as third mate, in the absence of Captain M'Girr, who had hat! his leg broken. On December 5 they sighted Cape Cod, when the wind veered to the north, blowing very heavily, accompanied by a dense snowstorm. it was hoped that the cape could be rounded and the vessel taken up to Boston, but the wind caught her, and, carrying her away. stranded her on the first bar as the dusk of evening wa.s coming on. The ship broke in two. The crew rushed into the rigging, but the storm was such that they were struck with spars or washed away. Mr. Evans was. he stated, one of the first swept off the ship. Partly by the swell of the sea and partly by swim- ming, he was carried up to the beach, and the last thing he recollected seeing before he lost consciousness was the light of the life-saving crew. He could remember nothing more of the occurrences until he found himself in bed at the life-saving station. All his clothes and other belongings were lost, but he was furnished with a new rig-out and sent home by the Cunard steamer Cepha.lonia. With the exception of a slight cold and cough, he does not feel at present any ill-effects from his peri- lous experiences, and. although this was not the first time he had been in great dansrer, he states that it is his intention to follow the sea, For a short time. however, he will take a rest at home with his parents.

BEACONSFIELWS FLOWER. Possible Extermination of the Pale Primrose. The Essex County Council on Tnesday agreed to a resolution in favour of the passing of an Act of Parliament making mushrooms, blackberries, and plant roots the property of the occupier of the land upon which they grow, and rendering anyone taking the same liable to prosecution and conviction. The motion was opposed by several members, including Mr. Courteney Warner, M.P., who urged that the object desired, which was chiefly to prevent the great damage at pre- sent committed, could be attained by strengthen- ing the law of trespass and making it more workable.—Mr. Champion Russell said that since the primrose had become part of the ritual of Conservative worship they were in danger near London at haviuff that flower exterminated.

SIR DAVID EVANS. He Will Resign His Seat on a London Committee. Alderman Sir David Evans will, on the re- assembling of the corporation, resign not only his chairmanship, but his seat as a member of the special committee formed to resist the attacks on the City's ancient rights and privi- leges. Sir David (says the World) makes no concealment of his antagonism to the decision of the majority of the corporation to, continue to give evidence before the Royal Commission- in which view both Sir Charles Hall and Sir John Monckton concur-and it is in order to absolve himself from the responsibility of this -what he thinks-suicidal course that he will leave the committee. He is also. it is said, disposed to resent the attitude which the Royal Commissioners have thought fit to adopt to. wards the corporation witnesses. Sir David will probably be succeeded in the chair by Alderman Faudel Phillips, who is the leading exponent of the views of those who hold the contrary opinion, that the City is doing wisely in not standing aloof from the Royal Commis- sion.

LIVERPOOL RECORDER. The Council Resent His Light Sentences on Prisoners. The Liverpool City Council on Wednesday engaged in a lively discussion, on the usual application from the City Recorder to allow him to engage an assistant to try quarter sessions cases, respecting the recorder's light sentences. It was contended that, as there was a diminution of crime according to the recorder, there was no need of assistance, for which the council must pay. Others urged that the magistrates either refused to send cases to the assizes where prisoners were justly dealt with, or sen tenced them at once in preference to the farce 0 r sending prisoners before the recorder for purely nominal punishment. The council eventually refused, by a majority of six, to allow the recorder to appoint an assistant.

FREEDOM OF CARDIFF. The Proposed Presentation to Lord Roberts. Reference has been made to the honour the Cardiff Corporation. like other bodies similarly constituted, intend to confer upon General Lord Roberts during his visit to Cardiff on the 26th inst. A special meeting of the council has been called for Monday next, when the following re- solution will be proposed by Councillor Brain That General the Right Honourable Lord Roberts, G.C.B., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., V.C., being a "person of distinction" within the meaning of the Honorary Freedom of Boroughs Act, 1885. be, in accordance with the provisions of the said Act, admitted an honorary freeman of the borough of Cardiff, and that such honorary free- dom be publicly presented to his lordship during his visit on the 26th instant.

KILLED WHILST PLAYING. The Fatal Accident to a Birmingham Apprentice. A coroner's jury at Birmingham on Wednes- day returned a verdiet of homicide by misad- venture in a case in which Ernest Inett, a printer's apprentice, whilst fighting a mock duel with a fellow apprentice named Stocker, fatally stabbed him. It was shown that Inett was armed with a penknife and Stocker with a printer's bodkin, and that the latter in lunging at Inett rushed on the point of the knife in his hand. The knife entered the lad's chest and punctured his heart, causing almost instant death. Inett was afterwards released from cus- tody.

ENGLISH MUSICIANS. The Incorporated Society Meet at Scarborough. At Scarborough on Wednesday, under the chairmanship of Sir Joseph Barnby, the Incor- porated Society of Musicians again met.—Speak- ing on the position of music in England, the Chairman said musical education could be finished in this country, and he only advocated travelling studentships so that students might enlarge their experience.-In the afternoon the conference considered the selection of the next place of meeting.—Mr. D. W. Rootham (Bris- tol) moved, and Dr. Pearce (London) seconded, Cardiff. Mr. Rootham, before moving Cardiff, asked if the accommodation there was good.— Sir Joseph Barnby Yes, I can testify to that personally.—Dublin was chosen by a large majority. o.

Murray Makes a Silly Bet FIRES AT HIS HEAD FOR A WAGER OF DRINKS. He Wounds Himself with the Little Pistol and will be a Lucky Man if he Lives. One of the most remarkable cases of fool. hardinèss that ever came to light was revealed; in the Jefferson (America) Court the other day. It tended to prove the exstence of the gambling instinct in a marked form in tk<- average human being and illustrated in a curioi-i,, way the force of resistance of riit human skull. The self-intended victim of this suicidal illustra-tion was Thomas Murray, a machinist in the Manhattan Iron Works. Murray did not work one day and spent most of the morning in a, saloon. Ho had had several bumpers of mixed ale and was in a. rather quarrelsome mood when Joseph Mul- vaney, a gasfitter employed in the neiglibour-: c hood, came in. Several other friends, among them Michael Horan and Thomas Hennessey,, came in later. Each of the new men took a good, full glass of whisky. Mulvaney playfully produced a small revolver which carried a, 22-calibre bullet, and a discussion, arose as to the harm that. might or might not. be done with such a cartridge. Murray insisted that it would not kill a man, while Mulvaney held that it would kill at a hundred yards. "Nonsense." said Murray. "I'll bet I can hold that pistol within fifteen inches of my head and fire and it will not kill me." The customers in the saloon jeered at him. The men were all pretty well intoxicated by this time, and the bartender, Michael Kearns, signified his willingness to hold the stakes if a bet was made. Murray still maintained that the little 22-calibre pistol was harmless, and then Mulvaney, the owner of the pistol, bet him drinks for the crowd as a sort of a dare that one bullet would kill him. "Rats," said Murray, as he staggered up to the bar and grabbed the pistol. 111 show you if you dare me." We do dare you," yelled the crowd, in a. joking way. never thinking that he would fire the weapon at himself. The next instant a pstol-shot rang out. Murray had placed the weapon close to his left temple and fired. Everyone was dumbfounded. They all rushed towards him, and while the blood trickled from the bullet wound Murray laughed in derision at them. "See." said he, "the little gun ain't worth a It wouldn't kill a spider." His companions were amazed, and before they could, interfere he shifted the pistol to the right hand and, placing the muzzle to his temple, he fired again and another bullet entered his head. Still he laughed, and, althou-h his face was besmeared with blood, he staggered up to the bar and demanded his drink. The men all made a hasty exit, fearing tc. be arretted, and Murray put the pistol in his pocket a.nd went out. When he reached the street some one advised him to go at oner to the nearest police station. He took this advice and a few minutes later staggered into the station. Walking up to the desk he laid the revolver down before the sergeant.ar.td said lie had shot himself. The sergeant called a policeman and directed him to make a charge of drunk and disorderly" against the mail,, which was done. The two bullets were ex-, traded at the hospital. Thev had been fleeted by contact- with the skull and were, found buried in the scalp, but fearfully flat, tened. Murray recovered sufficiently to be taken tu court, where he was subsequently^ arraigned hefore- Justice Hogan. The police- man told the story as far as he knew it, and then the justice heard the foregoing tale re-s hearsed by the prisoner. "It was a foolishi proceeding," said Murray, "but I was full and under those circumstances I refused to be stumped' and I did it. There's no one to blame but myself, and I'm dead lucky to, have escaped so easily." The justice looked at the man, whose headfi was swathed in bandages, through which the' blood had soaked, and said: Young man,. I am going to hold you until your father can be brought here, and through him I may be able to discover whether or not you are able to care for yourself. Any man who will de- liberately place his life in the balance for a drink is unable to look out for his own interests." The father called later and secured his relaese.

A DOUBLE CRIME. Attempted Murders of a Man and Woman in Rotherhithe. A man, whose name is said to be Foley, shot a man and a woman in a public-house in Rotherhithe New-road on Wednesday night. He was afterwards arrested and charged witb the crime, which is believed to be due to jealousy. The bullet in the woman was ex- tracted, but the man, whose name is Gosling; lies in the hospital with a bullet in his neck, and as yet the surgeons have not been able to discover it.
