Banquet at Cardiff. .
Banquet at Cardiff. I BRilliANT GATHERING AT THE ROYAL HOTEL. Imperial and Local Affairs DeattWith by the Leading Men of the Town. The banquet given by Mr. LeweHen Wood, the able and popular president of the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce, at the Royal Hotel on Wednesday evening is unique in the his- tory of the town. Many previous presidents have feasted the councils or executive com- mittees of their own association, but it was left to Mr. Wood to extend the invitation to Alderman Lewis propoees "The Ministers of Religion." the members and principal officials of the corporation, and to some of the most prominent residents of Cardiff. The objeot which Mr. Wood had in view was a laudable one. He hoped that, by bringing together at a social meeting the representatives of the town and of the docks, he would be able to establish a unity of interest which would be beneficial to the borough generally. Time was when some elight friction existed between the cor- poration and the ohamber, but during the I Sir E. J. Reed replies for the Navy. I laet couple of years both bodies have worked hiand in hand to obtain facilities to which Cardiff is justly entitled, and we feel certain that the banquet of Wednesday night will assist in cementing the harmony which has recently been established between the two bodies. The chamber of commerce, though it possesses no legislative power, has shown itself capable of bringing a. great amount of influenoe to bear upon the Legislature of the Mr. D. A. Thomas propeses Tke^ Mayor and Corporation of CardifE." Corporation of CardifE." country. It includes a number of energetic and far-eighited gentlemen, and among them there ie no abler than this year's president. It is not going beyond the mark to state tha.t at the banquet on Wednesday night there were gathered together the chief representatives of the commercial life of Cardiff, and naturally the speeches turned more or less on the needs of the town and its future development. Sir Edward Reed had an opportunity of expressing his dissatisfaction with the powers tha-t be at Mr. E. E. Moxey proposes the Dock and Railway Company. the Admiralty, and Sir Edward Hill spoke of the defenceless state of the Bristol Channel, but, with these ex- ceptions, the speeches were addressed almost entireLy to commercial matters. Mr. Wood was prepared with a piece of information which was reoeived with the greatest satis- faction. Ho announced, without any reser- vation, that the Custom House would be removed to the Docks. The advantage whioh this will be to those engaged in the shipping The Mayor's Coming Fancy Ball. SUGGESTIONS FOR COSTUMES. dook a.coommodationalso the president sounded no uncertain note. He referred to the neoessiiy for the construction of a dock which should be set apart for imports alone, and until this is accomplished it cannot be expected that Mr. Lewellen Wood responds. Cardiff will make that progress which is due to its geographical position. It would be diffi- cult to find a better distributing centre than Cardiff, but it cannot, be hoped that the produce of other countries will be imported there, when the vessels carrying that produce have to enter docks which are mainly devoted to the loading of coal. Mr. Wood touched lightly upon the question of a harbour trust. He recognised the fact that he was skating on thin ice, but this did not deter him from ex- pressing an opinion that the Corporation of Oardiff should foster in every possible way Mr. J. B. Ferrier proposes The Press." I —even at a small sacrifice—the development of the docks. Coming from a Barryite, which Mr. Wood frankly admitted himself to be, this advice may be regarded as genuine, and it may have the effect of stimulating the corporation to a. sense of their duty in regard to the future of Cardiff. That further dock accommodation is required is admitted by every colliery proprietor, merchant, and ship- owner in the port, and if the banquet on Wednesday night will have the effect of strengthening the hands of the harbour trust committee, and bringing into closer commu- nion the corporation and the ohamber of commerce, Mr. Wood will deserve the thanks of many generations to come.

DESTITUTION AT MUMBLES. During the hearing of the relief list at the usual fortnightly meeting of the Gower Board of Guardians on Tuesday, the Rev. John James, Penmaen, presiding, the relieving officer (Mr. Silvanus Bevan, jun.) drew the attention of the board to a shocking case of destitution at Norton, Mumbles, where an elderly man named Edward Jones, a native of North Wales, who had been receiving relief in kind for a short time, died on Sunday night amid the most dis- tressing surroundings. Deceased, who had a wife and three young children, lived in a four- roomed house, in which practically the only article of furniture was a bedstead occupied by him.—It was agreed that the relieving officer provide for the immediate requirements of the family, who, it was pointed out, would require permanent relief.
A Plucky Boy at Melingriffith.
A Plucky Boy at Melingriffith. A little before twelve o'clock on Tuesday a child, three years of age, named Bird, whose parents live at Melingriffith, fell into the canal near its home. No one was near at the time, and the little unfortunate was carried down by the current. In a short time, however, the child was brought to bank and safely taken home by William J. Jones, aged sixteen, who lives with his parents at Sunny Bank, Melin- griffith. The lad Jones was on his way home, and noticing the child in the water, he plunged in and effected a rescue. It is not long since a brother of the rescuer (Fred. Jones) gallantly saved the son of William Bird, who also had fallen into the canal.

The Play and Players.
The Play and Players. GOSSIP ABOUT THE CARDIFF PANTOMIME. Other Theatrical and Music-hall Per- formanees in the Town Humou- rously Dealt With. The one startling, not to say steggeringi thing about the Royal pantomime, is that the more you see of it the better you like it. Tho public, too, evidently view it this way, for they are rolling up merrily and planking down the oofish in a. manner calculated to mate glad the heart of the management. Of course, Mr. Fletcher is wise in his generation, and has made many additions and alterations, not the least important of which, to my way of thinkng, is the opening of the bar. It is most astonishing, sir. and perhaps you may have re- marked it, that a bar makes a big attraction. Without a bar, a thea-tre, to my way of think- ing, loses half ts piquancy. It is, as A were. sir, the difference between snow and pepper, which, as you know Snow is white, and lies in a dike, And every man lets it lie; Pepper is black, and hath a good smack And every man doth it buy. But I will now subside and, meandering into the rain to oool off, as it were, upraise myself on my hind legs and say unto you what I have to say. One of the many new features Mr. Fletcher has introduced is a serpentine dance by a. little local lady that has caught on very wen. True, she is young, and does not employ the little tricks known to many ladies of the greatnmitey professon, but, still, she isa-ohaon- ing, and has cleverness that is appreciated bf the Cardiff public, and as long as that is ft* case it does not matter a hang what anyces else thinks. We are a nation who, sitting down upaII our haunches with our tongues protruding^awa^ for something to happen somehow. Occasionally there is one of us who makes a more for hinV self, and I believe that one has oome along tin week. He writes me under the title of "A Theatrical Vandal," and he aays I MISS HARWOOD (Fatimd). What daring manager win do the kiêYiea: a service by running the harlequinade in front of the panto ? This is a portion of modem pantomime which is only kept alive by the pie* that it is hugely appreciated by the small try, but for some unexplained reason it is always brought on the last, thing, a-t Mt hour when Ml children should certainly be abed. A never sal would allow of children being taken hoaae at a reasonable hour-that is if a harlequinade is at all necessary now-a-days, when it has eimply descended into anadvertising medium." Now, that is the sort of letter tha.t lea imagine would permeate the soul of a theatrical manager with a chilly blast that would give an Esquimaux the dithers. It is the sort of letter that might make Mr. Fletcher sing "fol-de-riidle- ri-jo," cause Mr. Coles to ask for an appoint- ment with this modern vandal with the object of shedding his gore, and Make even the genial Tony shiver and curl up as if a cyclone was knocking around somewhere, and. I MISS CDARB HABWNOTOK yet I don't know but what there is something in it. Certainly, as my my correspondent ad« in a foot note, it has a nice little moral, oarcfoliy concealed maybe, bat still he asamcea it—the moral--is there. I wink, hew- ever, we may loavo it at that, and turn to consider the protoplasms and ttaags that are just now agitating that portion-of "the music-hall world known as Cardiff. I don't know what figurative nioefy Mf. Harrington has been panning out in his hrain in reducing the prices of admission to w Westgate-street house. Perhaps if the Mmo strikes him some day he will explain his reasons to the public at I largo in a transcendental and moving stanza- such as shall stir your very soul. For my own part, I can only tell yon that the way thai house has been filled during the last few weeks beats cockfighting. This week I was attracted by the fairy tale pitched in my ear—after the Alhambra manager's thumb had been inserted for the purpose of showing me a new trick of the Macs — I was attracted, I say, by hearing that one of the Pantzers could turn eleven somersaults and still be considered Aeber. It was hardly so bad, I may point out, M that, hut the Pantsers are top sawyers every time. I know thoee sort of thinsrs look easy enough, but when it comes to standing on your head on the head of another man and playing a few musical instruments in that position, not to speak of somersaults from the back to the head and other such light lIoài airy frivolities, then, sir, I may point out that the Pantzers may gogu doing such things with- out fear of my rivalry. I went .round to have a look at them after the performance, and fine fellpws they are too. Per- fectly developed, with iher*rtiuscle standing out UMO ,hi, Ot$ all over them in great lumpis feltd.knots. Prac- tically, all their life, the elder Mother informed me in broken English, they had been in the pro- fession. They were born in Brussells, and only c&me to England some two years ago. Every day they have to have a couple of hours' prac- tice. whilst to get their muscles flexible they have half an hour's practice just before appearing each evening. Which the same, I would beg to remark that their life is not all cake and mint. All round, the company is a strong ay. Charles Murray, who I remembermade a terrific hit as Soft Tommy in a Devonshire pantomime some three years ago, is, as the programme puts it, truly eccentric, whilst Miss Ethel Victor, with a rollicking football song, gees great guns. An exceedingly clever turn at the Empire this week is that of Weed* and Beasley, the American comedy artistes, who opened, I thought, rather tameW, but were stayers, for they came with a rattle at the finish. They a.re full of whimsical sayings and doings, and were much appreciated. Cata- whoela is surely an appropriate name for a. cat who can do evervthing with and on a bicycle except make it speak. The Stehbings are old favourites with Cardiff audienoes, and always ca.tch on. The dancing of the Onofris is another tremendous attraction. All round the company at the Empire is certainly a very smart one this week. Old playgoers in Cardiff will be glad to loam that Mr. E. Bulmer—a member of a talented and well-known family devoted to the ftage— who managed the Koyal during the first three yea.rs of its existence, is now comfortably in- stalled as stage manager and treasurer of the Theatre Royal.
