SWINDLED FOR A TENNER.
SWINDLED FOR A TENNER. A Cardiff Gentleman Lends this Sum on a Forged Letter. The Cardiff police are investigating a swindle by which Mr. Edward Fletcher, lessee of the e Theatre Royal, was induced to part with -1 cheque for £ 10. Information whic-h. a repre- sentative of the "Western Mail" ha,s obtained from Greenock shows that towards the end of last month Mr. Fletcher received a i letter purporting to be written by Mr. Edmund Tearle, the eminent tragedian, asking for the loan of JS10. The writer complained of the theatrical business being bad, and promised to return the money in a few days. So satisfied was he that his request would be granted that he enclosed an IOU Mr. Fletcher knew his hand- writing well, and the fact that he did not scrutinise the letter very closely, proves that the tragedian's ealigraphy had been very well imitated. A crossed cheque for the amount was addressed to Mr. Tearle at the TavistrxA- Hotel, London, from which place the letter was dated. Two or three days afterwards ) Mr. Fletcher observing that Mr. Tearle' was playing at Belfast, and, suspecting that he had been duped, telegraphed to that city making inquiries. Mr. Tearle's reply was to the effect that he had not written a-king for a loan, and stating that the letter referred to must have been a forgery. Half an hour later a telegram was received from Kingston-on- Thames thanking Mr. Fletcher for the cheque, and promising to return the money shortly. This also purported to be sent by Mr. Tearle. r n- quiries made at the Tavistock Hotel elicited the fact that letters addressed to Air. Tearle had been received there, and had been set it on to an address at Surbiton. This piece of infor- mation was forwarded to Mr. Tearle, who replied that he had no connection with Sur- biton, and never gave instructions that letters should be sent to him there. A representative of the ''Western Mail" Iud an interview with Mr. Tea.rle at the Theatre Royal, Greenock, this week. Although lie has his own suspi- cions as to the person who has been obtaining money in his name, he does not feel at present at liberty to speak in explicit terms on that point. Mr. Tearle. suggests, however, that, the cheque being a crossed one, it should not be exceedingly difficult to get a description of the party to whom it was paid at Kingston-on- Thames or of the person to whose account it was placed. Although there can be no doubt that a, forgery has been committed, it is ques- tionable whether proceedings will be taken, inasmuch as it would be necessary for Air, Tearle to visit Cardiff, and this would mean to him a very heavy loss.
.PRIZE FIGHT AT PENARTH.
PRIZE FIGHT AT PENARTH. Police Ceme on the Scene and Arrest the Would-be Combatants. A disgraceful attempt to break the ijeace on the eve of Good Friday at Penarth was happily frustrated by Inspector Rutter, who, in conjunction with Police-oonstable Rees, displayed signal smartness in preventing a prize tight between Albert Jones. Saltmead, Cardiff, and John Williams, butcher, Bute Docks, and also capturing- the principals. In- spector Rutter had reason to anticipate the scene of the encounter would be in the neigh- bourhood of Penarth, and had, therefore, picketed his men in plain clothes all over the district. Strange to relate, the spot selected for the battle was within 300 yards of the police- station, on premises in Salop-street belonging to Charles Barley, who was also present. When the inspector and Police-constable Rees broke in, to the utter amazement of the 30 or 40 atfsembled. including the Cardiff gang known as The Forty," the two principals were stripped for the fray, and were being rubbed down by their seconds. Four posts had been erected, with a rope running round. The floor was plentifully strewn with sawdust, sponges and water bottles were also en evidence, and everything incontrovertibly pointed to the fact that a "fight to the finish" was expected. The two principals were arrested and conveyed to the station, but were subsequently admitted to bail by two prominent tradesmen becoming sureties.
SMALL-POX AT CARDIFF.
SMALL-POX AT CARDIFF. Another Case Discovered in Patrick- street. Another ease of small-pox was discovered in Cardiff on Thursday. Whilst the sanitary oiHccrs were engaged in disinfecting No. 20, Patrick-street, Docks, from which an aft'eetcd sailor >vas removed to the hospital 011 the previous day, Chief-inspector Vaughan noticed that another of the inmates was covered with a rash, raid, from his large experience he at once concluded that the man, also a sailor, was suffering from small-pox. He sent for Dr. Walford, the medical .oifieer, and his diag- nosis proved that the suspicions of the inspector were well founded. The man was immediately removed to the Hamadryad Infectious Hospital where lie is now progressing favourably. He came from Havre, where the disease is now raging, about ten days ago, and the malady had almost run the full period of incubation before it was discovered. Every possible pre- caution has been taken bv the sanitary authorities to prevent the spread of the TOD- tae ion. oaasBBsssBCEnWMBMmannm

CONCERT AT THE EMPIRE.
CONCERT AT THE EMPIRE. Mr. Lascelles Carr Gives Good Advice to Railway Men. An entertainment on behalf of the Ainal- faniated Sooiety of Railway Servants' Orphan 'uiid was held 011 Good Friday evening at the Cardiff Empire Music-hall, which was kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. Oswald Stoll, who is a warm friend of this deserving society. The entertainment was of a diver- -,r- sified character, and its excellence reflected. considerable credit upon Mr. G. Williams, sec- retary of the committee. as also upon the com- mittee itself. There was a large and well- pleased attendance. Through some misunder- standing as to the time, Mr. Lascelles Carr, who had been announced to preside, was not present at the commencement. In his absence, Mr. Councillor Gerhold took the chair at seven o'clock. Upon the arrival of Mr. Lascelles Carr at 7.30, Mr. Gerhold vacated the chair in his favour. Some talented artistes gave their services, and most of the items were re- demanded. The friends who assisted were Miss Prior, Miss Amy Walters, Mr. S.Phillips, Miss G. Wedlake, Mr. W. Reed, Mr. W. Owen. Miss S. L. Jones, the Sisters Elsie and Annie Mor- fan, Miss Aggie Daviee, Master Geo..Jones, Ir. A. Billings, Mr. F. W. Watkins, the Kerman Family, and the Macnamara Band. During the interval in the programme Mr. Lascelles Carr warmly commended the work of the society on behalf of the orphan children of ra,ilwaymen. The business interests of news- paper proprietors depended, he said, to a great extent upon the punctuality of railwaymen. and they often felt under a great obligation to them for the services they so cordially rendered. Having said this much on behalf of the news- paper proprietors, Mr. Carr went on to say that on the occasion of his visit to America, in the early part of last year, he had an op- portunity of comparing the r:t.ih\ a,- services of the two countries, and his compari- son was greatly in favour of the home pro- duct. (Applause.) After referring to the general attention, the politeness, and the kind- liness of railway servants on all occasions, and also the infinitesimal number of aecidems that occurred through carelessness or neglect of duty. Mr. Carr said he was sorry to learn that the appeals for aid lately made by the secre- tary had not been so favourablv received as could be expected. He (Mr. Carr) ventured to give the secretary a word of advice. His method, he told him. was to send out well- written appeals to the sympathies of the public, but there was nothing easier to answer than a circular, which they could put i,nto the waste- paper basket with the smallest amount of sonal effort. He suggested that the officials of the society should, if possible, wait upon the merchants at the docks, and lay bef >, ,• them the claims of the railway men, and if such an appeal were made, he felt sure che \voi;,d have a much more favourable response than the £ 7 10s., which was the total amount contri- buted by merchants at the Docks. (Applause.) For himself, he would he glad to contribute, so far as his means would allow. He cordially sympathised with them in the work in which they were engaged, and hoped the funds -would be so strengthened that orphans would not be diiven foth to share the cold charity of a heartless world-tha-t those who had prospered by their labours might be enabled to provide some means for these children, that they might at all events, be fed. clothed, and educated, and enabled to enter upon the battle of life with a. fair chance, of success. (Applause.)- The proceedings closed with the usual votes of thanks and the singing of the National Anthem. _—————

! GOOD FRIDAY.
GOOD FRIDAY. How the Day Was Kept by the People of Cardiff. Probably no holiday in the year is observed in such a varied manner by all classes of people as Good Friday. Originally a day of fasting and of solemn religious ceremonies, it is now becoming a popular secular holiday, and as such is kept in a variety of ways, according to the tastes of the individual. As usual, morning services were held in all Anglican and Roman Catholic churches and some of the Nonconformist chapels, but by far the greater number of people, favoured by the warm spring weather, indulged in outdoor recreation. The railway companies ran special excursions to all parts of England, and these were taken advan- tage of by a considerable number of people throughout South Wales. Marine excursions took piace from Swansea, Newport, and Cardiff, aLd a number of football matches were con- tested In various localities. Eist-edifodau, con- certs, and miscellaneous entertainments were also largely attended in all districts, Cardiff. The beautiful weather which prevailed throughout the whole day was taken advantage of by thousands of people, and the streets were thronged with pedestrians from morning till night. Religious services were held in all the churches and some of the N oncsnformist places of worship, and these were fairly well attended. The trams and omni- buses were freely patronised, and some thousands of people wended their way to the Roath Park, but had to content themselves with viewing the ratepayers' property" through interminable iron railings. The marine excursions to various points of interest in the Bristol Channel were an attractive feature of the holiday, and local football matches drew together a large number of spectators. Concerts and various entertainments also took place in the evening. The Welsh in Cardiff. THE WELSH CHURCH.—Services were held all day in St. David's Church. There were large congregations, the officiating clergymen being the Revs. A. J. H. Hyslop and T. C. Phillips. CATHAYS CONGBBGATTONALISTS.—At Minny- street Congregational Chapel the annual tea meeting took place in the afternoon, and a sacred concert in the evening. THE BAPTISTS.—The Tabernacle (the Hayes) Sunday School also held their annual tea meeting in the. afternoon, and a grand concert in the evening, under the presidency of the Rev. Principal Edwards, D.D., of the Cardiff (PontypoeE College. The artistes were :—Mrs. J. Jones. Miss Sophie Matthews, Miss Eliza Davies. Miss Lizzie Vaughan. and Miss Kitty Griffiths, and Messrs. T. J. Jones, J. T. Phillips. Emanuel Benjamin, and Tom Price, The choir of the chapel, under the leadership of Mr. David Vaughan, took part in the pro- ceedings, and Miss Lily David presided at the organ. SINGING CTMASFA—The annual singing Cymanfa of the Calvinistic Methodists in Cardiff and neighbourheod was I*ld at the English Presbyterian Chape] in Frederick-street. The conductor was Mr. David Jenkins, Mus.Bac., Aberystwith chairman of the executive com- mittee, the Rev. J. M. Davies. Docks; treasurer. Mr. D. Morgan. Canton secretaries, Mr. David Evans, Docks, and Mr. Thomas Thomas, Pembroke-terrace. Meetings were held at 10.30 a.m.. two and six p.m. and were presided over by the Rev. J. M. Davies, the Rev. T. Jones-Davies (Pentyrcht, and the Rev. J. M. Jones (Cardiff). There was a very marked improvement in the singing, and, under the baton of the able conductor, some of the chants, anthems, and tunes were rendered with great effect, especially Kilmorey," Blaen- hafi-en." "St. Elizabeth," Broncairo," and the chants. At intervals speeches were de- livered by the presidents, Mr. Davies (" Car- dotyn "), America the Rev. Watkin Williams, Barry and Mr. David Evans. Miss Jennie Morgan (Pembroke-terrace), Mr. John Thomas (Pentyrch), and Mr. O. T. Davies (Cathays) acted as accompanists. In every sense this was the most successful "Cymanfa" ever held in Cardiff by the Welsh Calvinisties. The chapel was crowded, and the singing good, and the result cannot be otherwise than to raise the standard of congregational singing in the town and neighbourhood.

GLAMORGAN MAGISTRATES. A Protest is Made by the Pontypridd Liberal Club. No little dissatisfaction is being expressed at Pontypridd because the claims of the town for a larger representation on the county bench had been recently ignored, and at a meeting of the Liberal Club committee on Wednesday night the following resolution was passed: — "rhat this meeting, while rejoicing at die appointment of an additional magistrate for Pontypridd, regrets that the Lord Citancellor did not see fit to place a larger number of local gentlemen on the bench, and especially that no one- was appointed representing the labour interests which so largely predominate in this district; further, that, having regard to the fact that Mr. William Williams 4he newly-appointed justice, is the only local Liberal on the bench, and in the wnole of the town of Pontypridd, comprising a population of 25.000. there are even now but four resident magistrates, we respectfully ask his lordship to re-t-onsider thB matter, and toO use h;s pre- rogative by placing several other local Liberal and Labour lead-ers on the commission of the peace for the county at the earliest possible opportunity." Copies of the resolution were ordered to be sent to the Lord Chancellor and Mr. Alfred Thomas. M.P. I"

Being unable to understand English he had at first considerable dtfii cnlty in making his wants known, but whenever he was given food he would make a low bow., after which he would kiss a small crucifix he carried on his breast, and would then appa- rently call down benedictions on the heads of those who had administered to his neoes- sities. He took up his abode on a farm, a few days after his arrival, in a sma-ll oave under an uprooted oak tree in the midst of a small grove. Through an interpreter the small grove. Through an interpreter the owner of the farm managed to learn a little of the man's history. He was a native of the Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland, where he be- came involved in a controversy, and finally killed his nearest friend in a duel. To escape the consequences he fled* and enlisted in the French Army. After years of gallant service he was promoted to the rank of a corporal and immediately afterwards became disgusted with the life of a soldier, in consequence of which he deserted and went to Canada, from which coun- try he went to New Jersey, where he expressed a. wish to spend the remainder of his days and do penance for his sins. He was a devout Catholic, and on his coming to America made a vow to live without fire and never accept pe- cuniary aid from anyone. This vow he reli- giously observed. One morning in the winter of 1880 he was found dead in the cave which had been his habitation for nearly 23 years. His grave will soon be marked by a modest shaft of marble, on which will be inscribed a brief" sketch of his virtues.
