The Rhondda Glee Meiety are great favourites in Pembrokeshire and Cardigan- shire. They liave just given their twenty- seventh concert there since last August. Parish council meetings are convenient for small tradesmen who want to meet their cus- tomers. At the clóse of one of thcie meetings in Glamorgan a shoemaker measured a col- league for a pair of boots. On the strength of having played marbles at school with Mr. D. H. Lewis, the Neath draper, a Cariiiartli en shire parish councillor now writes to ask, "Can you inform me where to procure the 'new married cL.l:'—don't go after ten p.m.. 0117;- tick?" Lieutenant-colonel Denne, who acted as clerk of the scales at Tenby Races, is a distinguished soldier. He led his regiment—the 4th Dragoons -at Tel-el-Kebir, and afterwards had charge of Arabi. Colonel Denne has now retired and live in Ireland, but winters at Tenby. During the past week Mr. LasceIIes Carr has been inundated with abusive letters from teetotallers, but those who aimed at adding injury to insult by sending their letters un- stamped w ere foiled, for the chief issued orders that unpaid letters should not be taken in. The 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment, from Devonport, will. in all orobi'uaty, re- place the Welsh Regiment at Pembroke Dock in July next. It is stated, however, that efforts will be made to have t.he South Wales Borderers (24th Regiment) from Portsmouth there instead. Madame Patti-Xicolilli, writing in the "New York World." says:—"There is no country in the world where the domestic virtues are more abundantly and beautifully exemplilied than in Wales. There is no country where there is more parental devotion and filial affection, and all these qualities appear to especial advantage at any festal season. r. Donald Maclean is a careless reasoner. He hopes the fines for shebeening in Cardiff will soon be raised. Mr. Maclean actually said this while holding in his hand a. document showing that out of the last 347 convictions only sixteen paid the fines, while nearly every nne of the other 331 went to gaol for the maxi- mum term of imprisonment. Colonel Howard Vincent found himself imongst friends, one mifht sa-y. at Pontypridd m Saturday night. It was close by he COlli- nenced his career with the Welsh Fusiliers, a regiment respected by every Welshman and Welshwoman. Another tie between the gallant ;olonel and Pontypridd is Mr. James Jeffry, me of his earliest friends at Sheffield, whose I ines have only recently fallerf as Conser- raiive agent in East Glamorgan. David Cox, tlr?,was a frt,(Tuent- :or to Bef tws, and on one occasion he was much iispleased to find that some waggish artist Tiends from London had painted outside on he church walls some rough caricatures of the wrson thundering from the pmpit and the ] ;lerk nodding underneath. In the evening, iccompanied by a friend, and carrying a basin )f water and a. brush, Cox marched to the E WfIIC. and never rested until every trace of the 1 Mint had been washed off.. A legend dies hard. especially when there is some practical benefit attending its preserva- tion. To this day Welsli drovers taking cattle to London depasture their herds freely on the heath or common land near Hughenden, for the story runs that once upon a time a great battle was rag-ing there between the Saxons and Danes, but a party of Briton;: coming up gave their aid to the Saxons, who thus won the day. In memory of this "Deadman Danes Valley is free to the Welshmen. Colonel Howard Vincent made some happy references to two Conservatives in particular in his Pontypridd address. The one was Mr. Maclean, the prospective member for Cardiff, whom the colonel characterised as a. man of wonderful knowledge of modern politics the other Mr. Jeffry, the new Conservative agent at Pontypridd, whom Colonel Vincent said knew two things first, the way to win people's hearts, a.nd, seoondly, the way to win their votes' This he amply proved during his career at Sheffield. The "new woman" is not a new subject so far as Wales is concerned. Ages ago the question was one of those things that engaged the atten- tion of the intellectual people of Cardigan in the neighbourhood of Aberayrcn. The question was decided by a plebiscite, and the majority voted in favour of the "old" woman. The fact is perpetuated in the name of the parish in which that xleepv little place lies, which is called to this day "Hen Fenvw." The word appears sometimes in its correct forb, Hen Fvnyw. The new evangelist, like the new woman and the new journalism, has thoroughly learnt the art of Loom. Another Welsh journalist has received a call to London. Mr.. Llewelyn Williams, who started the "South Wales brar" in Barry and the "South Wales Daily Post" in Swansea, and who has latterly been assistant editor of our Radical j contemporary, and invented and carried on its column of Welsh Gossip." will in a few weeks take up the responsible position of sub- editor of the London "Star." It was Mr. Williams who was recently disturbing the poli- tical peace of Swansea District, and was within an ace of securing the Radical candidature now fondly liugtred by Mr. Brynmor Jones. It is related of George IV., when lie waf in Breconshire, that he came in contact one uay v.-ith Major Gwynne Holford. whose residence at Buckland was last week burnt to the srround that he started back surprised, and exclaimed, "H alIo, Holford. how the dickens did you come here?"' The King, when Regent, knew the major personally, but did not kuow that the veteran of Waterloo had retired to a Brecon- shire seat. The major was so impressed with the strategic arrangement of his forces by Wellington at Waterloo that he had his planta- I tions at Buckland laid out in imitation of the squares and columns OIl the Belgian battle- field.

LOCAL AMUSEMENTS.
LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. BABES IN THE WOOD AT CARDIFF THEATRE ROYAL. The paiitominiv "Babes in the Wood," after a most successful run at the Theatre Royal, Cardiff, will conclude this week, when those artistes who have. during their stay in the Welsh Metropolis. helped to entertain and amuse the large audiences which have nightly filled Mr. Fletcher's popular house will take their benefits. Wednesday will be the benefit night of Alr. "A. P. BOi well. wl»o Lms aiada himself so popular in the character of "Jabez Balfive." one of the wicked robbers, not to himself so popular in the character of "Jabez Balfive." one of the wicked robbers, not to mention his many clever exhibitions of skill and strength, and Miss Florence Kayes. who has made a very charming "Dolly Dumpling,' The following night (Thursday) the Sisters Morgan will take their benefit." All who have seen the pantomime have unhesitatingly asserted that the sisters are as charming a pair of little actresses a6 one could wish to se»?, and all Thursday, when several additional artistes will appear, the house ought to be a bumper one. 1 Friday will be the benefit nig-ht of Nell Ingram ("Robin Hood"), and Saturday that of Mr. Kennedy Allen, who has shown his versa- tility in the admirable way in which lie has portrayed "The Baroness." Next week Charleys Aunt" wiil make a welcome re- appearance at the Royal, and the week follow- ing Miss 1 ortescue and her celebrated company will visit the town. GRAND THEATRE, CARDIFF. Those who visit the Grand Theatre this week are sure to find out the truth of the assertion that as a pantomime draws to a. close the fun becomes faster and more furious. 'Robinson Crusoe" has been pronounced on all sides an unqualified success, and its withdrawal when at the height of its popularity is a matter for regret. During the week several special attrac- tions will be introduced, but the great nights will be Wednesday and Friday, when those artistes to whom the success of the pantomime is chiefly due will receive their benefits. On j Wednesday evening Miss Melinda May will receive a recognition for the able manner with which she has played the role of principal boy in the character of "Robinson Crusoe. The occasion will be marked by the introduction into the pantomime of several additional song", which include "Old Kent Road." by Mr J. ?i" an(^ "Moll-v i111^ 1 and the Babv bv Mis* May herself. Friday will be the joint teneht night of Mr. J. E. Coyle and Mr. Walter L11 win, who in their respective characters haYe ).een the life ajid go of the pantomime. and for this uight several novelties will be introduced. THE EMPIRES. „, CARDIFF. Ihe for the Cardiff Empire this week are headed with the annomncemeiu that a visit is to be paid by the two Boxmg Rams. These wonderful animals will try to prove how much superior as a mode of attack is the tistic art to the horns which the ordinary ram is contented to put up with. The two delmtem8 to the world of pugilism have won golden opmions from all authorities on the use of the gloves, and their exhibition is well worth seeing! The .FolTest combination make a welcome visit with another of their delightful comic sketches. The spectacle "China," in which over 50 local chil- dren trained by Mr. W. Selkirk, are e.n^a-ed will be presented to the public for the final veek. Other turns will be given by Ada Fawn, comedienne; Lieutenant Albini, _\1r. SWANSEA. Mr. Oswald St oil will on Monday night in- troduce to his Swansea patrons the celebrated f rantz Family, who appear in South Wales for the first time in their prodigies in the acro- j' batic art. Their performance, which has re- ceived the praise of the London critics, is an f especially clever one. and it is doubtful whether 1 containing, as it does, meml>ers of both sexes, lias ever been equalled by other atTOo^ts 0:1 the parallel a-.id horizontal Ws. A atTOo^ts 0:1 the parallel a-.id horizontal baj-s. A i-,ovel sensation, a serpentine dance on the slack-wire, will be given by the Beautiful Jos- sica, and the Reeves Combination will contri- bute a sketoh, in which are several delightful songs and some very graceful dancing. Other names upon the bills are those of Lottie Lennox, serio comedy songstress; Tracy and Lyons] duettists and dancers; Cissie Kent, vocalist: and the Zanettos, who excel in tricks of sleight of hand. J NEWPORT. The mammoth tableaux representing those I well-known military pictures bv Miss Elizabeth Thompson, "The Roll Call," "The Return from lmkerman. Bala-clava," &c.. which ha\e been recently appearing with such great success at both of Air. Stoll's houses at Cardiff, will this week be introduced to the patroius of the Newport Empire. The participators in these living pictures, who have all taken part in -.ho scenes depicted, have been trained by Mr. W ll Gregory, and, besides the brilliant spectacular fffwt-s which tiiey produce, render m the ;n- tervals between the pictures appropriate songs and recitation. The party of sturdy veterans which compose the troup are commanded y Sergeant-major Parkinson, late of the 11th Hussars, who is one of the survivors .)f the famous charge of the six hundred. The other artistes who are billed to appear include Mi-i- Florence Laccy, the original organ T;rl Ken- nedy and Allen, vocalists and dancers Vest lice a-nd Elts, knockabouts; Frank Whitely, ban- joist and daaioer; Alice Oakley, comedienne; and the Wal Pink Comedy Company, who will give their latest London success, Snowed tTP-" THE PANOPTICON. During the present week Mr. M'Leod LoadE-r and his company appear at the New- Theatre in the new military drama. entitled I "The Enemy's Camp." founded on incidents in the Chilian Revolution of 1891. The company is a strong one. and brings new and mechanical scenery. The camp scene, for in^tanoe. will bp a correct reproduction of the situation occupied by the reikis before the Battle of Valparaiso.
A BODY EXHUMED.
A BODY EXHUMED. MOTHER IDENTIFIED HER MISSING SON AT CARDIFF. On the 30th of September last the body of a man was found in the East Dock. Oardiff, and an inquest was held by the borough coroner on the 2nd of October. and a verdict of "Found drowned" returned. No one had up to that. time identified the body, but a description of the deceased, the clothes, &c., appeared in the "Western Mail." Shortly afterwards the coroner received a communim-, tion from Port Talbot requesting further par- ticulars respecting the clothes. The-se were supplied by the coroner, and tiie mother of a man named George Thomas, a tin -pIa k worker residing there, believed the body to be that of her son. In a few days a letter was sent to the Home Seci-etarv asking for an order to exhume the IJOUV. After a good deal of delay for further inquiries to be made, a.n order to exhume the body was sent to the coroner on Friday. On Saturday the mother and one of he.r sons attended at the office of the coroner, and were examined by him, after which the parties proceeded to the New Ceme- tery, where the body was exhumed in the presence of the manager, the coffin opt-ned, and the mother at once recognised the body as that of her son. W hen the body was interred the features were much swollen from the deceased having been for a number of days rn the water. This had entirely uu.s&p- oeareu when the body was exhumed, and the features were clearly defined. The parties are in poor circumstance^, the deceased having gone to Newport- to seek for work, but failed to obtain employment, and was, it is believed. returning home when he fell into the. dock. His life was. however, insured, and this the mother will now be able to c.airn.
