OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY THF BASHFUL WOOER. Dorothea lived in those far off days when g1?"b r married for love, and she had of lovers a score. One there was her heart favoured more htan thA resit, though he gtiessed it not, and caused her great uneasiness thereby. Trovers were not then confined to the parlour, kif. wera allowed to join the famiily circle, v?ihere they aat out the old folks a half-hour or co ending up with a. kiss generally before leaving. That is, if the young man was not bashful or afflicted with a stammering tongue. Should he be ao unfort)unate as to possess these qaaliciea. he would undoubtedly spring to his le-t the moment the old folks left tke room, mutter good-uighit, and make a boftt for the door without saying another word; though his heart might be full to buivstin g with the love ae oor'ild noi gipsak. He would sooner face a cannon's mouth than a gleam from her lovely, mocking eyes. Verily, as the poet hath said "He loves indeed who quakes to tell hie loye." Now, this sort of thing had happened once or twice to Dorothea,, and had the timid1 one been any of her devoted swaine but Daniel it might have passed unnoticed but being Daniel it wiag a master to be considered with some deliberation; for, while he did not hesitate to prscs her hand in the dance, and gaze lovingly down, into the depths of her beautiful eyes ,i upon such occasions, he arose with a trepidation painful to witness, and wor.hy of I a better cause, if left a momeaxt alone with her, j 8Aq. »uiling Die twit djown over his ver. would r-lungo out of dcors in a manner fit lo inake one believe he had taken leave of hrs rens'^ —which in fact he had, for the tinis being, at least. Once fuitside the cool air revived him to suoh an extent that his mental extJaniatit i, was "Fool thr.t I tiii I suppose she's laughing at me, and thinks I'm a great uoward—but she dw's not know—oh, she does not know! A folio"- must have an awful good opinion of htmsell" to ask "l!<.>'b a creat are to have hi;t>. for better and for worse, too. It makes. TII» feel nitg-hty mwwi. She has sur,1] little ftfi —God iblftss her!—and ?uch a heavenly smile, thmt somehow she makes me feel 1-kp a worm when she lookx at i!ic, and I'd rather crawl limitr her pret"- feet ar.d be orusa'd to dealh than do anything else in the world-so lielp me, Bob, I would One evening, when Daniel had resisted the desir* to fly the moment 1 is gulden opportunity arrived, he and Dorothea were together in the old-fashioned sitting-room. The logs burnt merrily on the broad hearth, and the kettle hanging over the blaze sputtered and hissed in a terrible hurry, now and then lifting its great iron cover to let. o!" quantitie.s of steam^-clouds that ratpidly disappeared only to make room for oilier*, that k<»pt the lid bobbing up and down continually. The bustliii" manner of the kettle seemed to have some influence on the' young man, for lie arose, cleared hit; throat and coughed, with sun- dry looks ia bar direction, tfr&o. guudbb bad of. the back of a cliair to steady himself, at last dropping it without saying a word. A frown sat upon his strong feature, which, when she glanced at him, as she did slily just then, made Dorothea wonder if lie were angry. They sat on the opposite sides of the hearth —he with his arms folded across his breast, a deep frown upon his brow, and eyes fixed on the tioor. She on the other, her sweet face and bare arms warmed into rosy life by the firelight glow, her hands clasped amid the folds of her chort-waisted, low-necked tire ?, who^e puffed slee-ves encircled! the moulded arms juiit below the shoulder. The bright coil of auburn hair was twisted high upon her head, and held in place by a dainty comb. With drooping- eyes she watched the gloomy figure opposite, thus oomipJeting the picture of a ps.ir of old-fashioned lovers. The firelight flashed around them, and the kettle blew a long puff of steam from its spout as though in angry expostulation at the long t silence; they hep.ru it not. At last Daniel leant forward, his elbows on his knees. "Doroth ea "Yes, DiJ..nÚ,I!" "I want to tell you that—that T'm in love," desperately, and gazing up at the ceiling. "And I—wish you'd kinder take it for granted, you klww-the rest of it, I mean; you understand me, Dorothea? I'm not equa'J to it, you see," emilimg and reddening. Dorovhea locked up with a merry twinkle in her blue eyes. "Oh, y«=," she said. "As I understand you, Daniel, you are in love, and you want me to tell you how to pop the question. Am I right ? Well, I'm not a man, you know-" "Yes, thank Heaven!" "And, therefore, cannot be pupposed to know much about such things. I'll do the best I run for you. howe-vetr. Tell me. before 1 begin* it the young lady worthy of your best love?" "She's a perfect angel, and-" Niever mind," she interrupted, laughing. 1 bat will do. I'm satisfied she is worthy of you in that caise. Now you must just imagine yourself a- young lady, Daniel," smiling in spite of herself as s-he thought of that tall form in female attire, "and don't look so mystified, else I shadl think you are stupid." "I am," isnid Daniel, humbly. I You see, my idea is to show you hy acting it all out. Do you understand? I am going to be a young gentleman, very much m love, who knows how to speak out." "Oh, arc you? Please don't," he pleaded, as though he expected some wicked fairy was going to turn lvsr into a- man on the spot. I think I'd much rather have you just as you are." He stood meekly before her, watching every n.fA-trnent with wondering, admiring eye, while she flew to the other end of the room and brought back a dedicate white shawl, which she proceeded to throw over his shoulders. She had to stand on the has-cok to reach up; her soft cheek brushed his lightly as she leant forward to arrange it carefully, and he groaned aloud when she evaded the kiss he tried to bestow upon it. For shame, sir!" she cried, jumping away. That isn't proper; no young lady acts so. I was just throwing this shawl over you to keep you from taking- cold it's the way lovers do, you know." Yes?" And I have a perfoct right to ha.ng over YOIlt A little lovingly, even if I did not intend to Tironose, because I'm a man, you see, and yon nre only a. woman; and you ought to appear not to notice it, oody blush a. little and look frightened—so! That's the way girls do It would be very immodest to try to kiss a nan when he is simply arranging your wrap for you. Think of "t! How disgraceful!" And she shook her head with horror at the bare thought. He folded his haads and gazed at her in dumb ;u»tonishm».:it, wondering what Ae was going to do next. "Now you mu^t take my arm and I'll lead you to a seat. We've been dancing." Have we?" he a -ked, in doubt as to what one miight call such proceedings, there being but ON> conception of the situation in his mind, that he wa*s in Paradise, and he wished ilt might g■; or. for ever. Then thev walked aeroos the room together, making a most ludicrous picture; his tall form, .T-r.iyerl r silk stockings, knee-breeches and vslv^t top coat, was surmounted by the white SI1" W 1. which scarcely covered his ehoulders, and he obliged to stoop a jittle in order to take the pretty white arm held up for him. Dorothea make every effort to appear the lover, and was very solicitous for him, which teemed to Jjavo the reverse effect to that which she desired, for instead of being timid and blushing he acted like a caged lion, and her lover-like reg-ard v,;u interspersed with many unlover- lik^ admonitions to "lteep quiet!" "'behave YOllMeH I" 3ud so on. "There—here we are! Now you must sit dov-ii on the sofa while I fall upon my knees "iNo don't!" "Yes, I wSi—&nd ask you to marry me." "Oh, Dorothea," eagerly, "you must not, detu. I'll take it lor-" ''■No, you will not! Be silent, sir! You're a. young lady, and roar name is Rosamond: do you und-atf/tai* Just imagine bet; anticipating an orfer of marriage and telling him she'll take it for granted. Oh, it's shame- ful! You must play your part, f1-. I demand it! Keep quiet, mow!" He dbeyed reluctantly, dlropped his hands, which he had held out, and looked at her with beseeching eyes while she continued "Surely you must have noticed that T lore you, dearest!" gazing up into his face with a weadth of affection in her eyes. "Rosaiaond -my Rosamond This was toe much for human endurance; he caught her in his arms and smothered he~ with kisees. "God bless you for that. my darling! Oh, Dorothea, you've made me the happiest man in the world! Say it again, dear-sai, it a'ram! 'I love you'—sweeteet words of all!" "Indeed, I will not, sir!" said Dorothea, struggling to free herself from hi tlo-e embrace. "It would be very immodest for me to do so when—when you have never sai^ it yourself," hiding her face. "Allå theu I \13 only acting, you know." "Dorothea savagely, "ch". Vol)" mean 'i? God forbid There waa love in vour eyes when you apoke thegf sweet, precious words I ¡1m sure of it! And T love you, my darling-ah, you will never guess how much Don't tell me you are going to take it aN back—I could not bear it—indeed I could not!" "Daniel," she whispered, dropping her head upon his shoulder, "don't look bko that' I was only acting then, but I love you, really." For answer he held her close to htm .ind kissed her passionately. "'My love, my life, my wH" he mutmurpd. And the curtain faJllø upon this little love drama of yesterday. (The End.)
DUELLING EDITORS.
DUELLING EDITORS. I remember (says a writer in the "Cornhill") calling at the office of a. great Parisian news- paper with a friend who wished to have recti- fied a statement published dn it concerning him. When our business was made known we were ushered into a handsomely furnished room oa the first floor. Seated at desks, without a trace of pens, ink, or paper, or of anything in a literary way except some new novels, together with a few packages of cigarettes, were two gentleman, whose appearance made a. con- siderable impression on me. They were fault- lessly dressed in deep black (the duellist's colour). Bach had the ribbon of the Legion in his but- ton-hole. their long jet-black moustaches were waxed out to a point as fine as a needle's, and there was in their whole manner, their voice, their gestures, and the expression of their eyes and mouths, an indescribable some- thing that proclaims the man who at one time or another has worn a uniform. These were the fighting editors, with whom evidently the pen was not mightier than the sword. They wera eivil, however, and oonsaated to the rectification of the paragraph.

THE WAY ENGLAND LOOKS AT AMERICA.
THE WAY ENGLAND LOOKS AT AMERICA. Sjvaliing of the common belief ia Europe -tiiat America is a country <* railway disasters. murders, and freakirf- laws, an American doctor says: "Picking up a London paper once when sn England—it was no other than the Thunderer itself—the only paragraph of American news which I oould find in any part of the voluminous blanket was a statement to the effect that a man had been arretted in Boston for kissing his wife mpon the street. Of course, ap might be expected, this was a newspaper 'fake,' which some humorous reporter, for the lack of anything better, had inserted in some American news- paper. But this was the only piez-e of news which it had .been thought worth while that day to cable under the seas to this great Metropolitan journal. Many an English and Australian friend has said to me, 'I should think you would be afraid to travel in America. You always seem to Ibe having such dreadful railway acwd-eiits We scarcely take up a paper without seeing an account of some new horror.' Alas, that it cannot be said that the frequency of railroad horrors is a popular delusion, but the fears of my friend were largely exaggerate*?I. because the papers he saw gave him very little else than these accounts of direful railway accidents and other disasters. When I informed him that I had travel!?d many thousands of mile.- without meeting a serious mishap or even being held up by highwaymen, it almost parsed his compre- hension, and lie made up his mind that, either the tuafper.s which he habitually read or mysoif had been, drawing a long bow." had been drawing a long bow."

SOME PHASES OF LONDON LIFE.
SOME PHASES OF LONDON LIFE. A curious phase of London life, described lQ Mr. Charles Booth's new volume, is that of law writers and engrossers, to whom law stationeR send out their work. Even here we find the middleman, known as an "office keeper," who rents a room and supplies desk, ink, and light- ing to any who come on the chance of finding work. The jaore regular of these are known as "sitters," but others are called "wallers, be- cause, if wanted, they are to be found leauing against the street wall or at the "iron office," as one of the lamp-posts in Oursitor-street is termed. They are men who have come down in the world, and are ""till on the descending scale, whose lower depth is represented by the addressers of envelopes and writers of begging letters (known to one another as B.L.'s), and lowest, in respect of finances. by the bearers of sandwich boards along the street. Out of every shilling they earn 2d. is paid to the office keeper and the business practically begins after liva o'clock in the evening. Solicitors require docti- ments which they have given out overnight to be copied out and ready for them on reaching their office next morning. The custom necessi- tates working through the night, and even through the small hours of the morning these men may be found with a pot of liquor on the floor beneath their seats, writing away and alter- nately drinking and falling asleep. No doubt their position is due to weakness of character, but they occupy a place in Bohemian life wtuch it would require a Dickens to describe.
