It is hardly possible to attach too much im- portance to tlus feature of the work. It is not only a comprehensive dictionary, but also a complete encyclopredia to all branches of knowledge. The editors have not rested con- tent with giving merely a definition of each word, but, wherever necessary, have supple- mented the definitions by short articles con- taining a concise description and history of that which the word represents. Especial efforts have been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the scientific information, the chemical and natural science nomenclature being brought up to the very latest date. ITS COMPREHENSIVENESS AND ITS WIDE- NESSOF RANGE IN POINT OF TIME. THE LARGE NUMBER AND PRACTICAL CHARACTER OF ITS ILLUSTATIONS. The numerous pictorial illustrations, although eminently artistic in character, are in no sense mere embellishments, but in every case help to elucidate the text. THE RICHNESS AND COMPLETENESS OF THE ILLUSTRATIVE QUOTATIONS. In both of these most important points the "Western Mail" Encyclopedic Dictionary stands alone. The- editors have endeavoured to trace out and show to the reader, by illustrative quotations, the history and development of each word, and such a, system is for the first time fully carried out in the present work. In no other dictionary will there be found such a richness and fulness of illustrative quota- tion. In the Western Mail Encyclopaedic Dictionary each meaning and each sub-division of each meaning is. in nearlv every case, illus- trated by a quotation, the whole work compris- ing a collection of examples for the gathering together of which a very Inrge nnmber of books of all classes and of every date has been socially read. The ordinarv English Dictionaries have been 'content to register such words as are univer- sally recognised as "English." and are to be met with in tlif writings find conversation of every-dav life. But, beyond these, it is impos- s ble to open any book or naner without meet, ing with words or a scientific or technical character the exact meanings of which, essen- tial as thev are to the full understanding of the passages in which tbpv occur 11" ordinary dictionary supplies. In such cases the reader or student must, consequently, have recourse to soniB dictionary or glossary snecial'v devoted to the collection ;I!1C] ex"i-ination of terms in use in the particular branches of science or art ♦ o -lv'h cf'i "-irifj h.,l""T1(!. rrne "Western Mail" Enrvr'o'iaedic D'ftionarv by combining in one ,I] the-e siv^al clossaries or vocabu- liries. pffp'-tc a double saving—an economy of time and of money. II .THE MAN SHE DEARLY LOVED
I I THE MAN SHE DEARLY LOVED 8PL&ALLV SBT FOR THE tVENti'iG tXPRtSS. SYNOPSIS OF PRECEDING CHAPTERS. I Francis and Felix Hastings are .twin kroGjers in love with the same V n!'a Herkwith r is engaged to Francis. Chailes Beckvntn A New York detective, meets one ol ,^cI ^s at a lonely ruined tavern on the Jer-ej meadows. The inn is run by a named Stein and his beautiful Dulla. The twin who calls himself r says he has just returned from Chth to that in his absence Felix has won v lUa"J love from him. Beckwith suggests tnai Felix, trading on the wonderful rcsembUnc between the twins, may have passed hinisen off as Francis. Hastings that if he finds this tb be true, he will ki his brother. His brother, he thinks, also lias good. reas6n fqr desiring his death- say* Felix is to meet him at the tavern that night. The next morning IJecUw'tn saYs Felix is to meet him at the tavern that same night. The next morning 4eckwith » awakens to find himself the only living creature in the tavern. He searches for Hastings and finds him lying murdered in his room. Beckwith returns to New York in search of Few Hastings to notify him of hi" brother's death. He finds Hastings at Miss Price's Madison-avenue home, but the twin declares himself to be Francis, not Felix. He also savs Felix is in Chicago. Beckwith tells the sfi>ry of his adventure at the Meadow Tavern, and is laughed at by Hastings who calls the whole story a dream. He Say* l*e has not been to the Tavern in vear<»; and that Ai is twin brother, being now in ChlcagA, e ah not have been the man Beck- with says he met there. The detective is bewildered at Hastings's assertion that he is Francis, but at length asks what has become of a pearl ring which Francis always wore. Hastings changes colour at this question. "d iM at lam t-lit. vi.i- Prim enters and adds her testimony to that of Hi*(iney even producing a letter received from Felix that very day. The letter bears a (.Ilii,-ago i)ost;tiai-k. To dear up the mys- terv Beckwith proposes that the trio ride out to' the ^e&dow '^avpr", Vlew the body. Hastings declares there is nobody there, but expresses willingness to^ investi- gate. They accordingly go out to tavern the following morning. e,. Irom the bed where Beckwith last saw it, close search of the premises reveals nothing. Bc( kwith goes next day to Clncago to look up Felix at the address given by Miss Price He finds the man he has sought at the Greycourt Hotel. Chicago and is in- formed that this twin has been there for the past-six weeks. The hotel proprietor corro- borates thi* statement. On neither twin s hand is \here any sign of the gash found across the palnj. of the corpse at the Meadow Tavern. lipckwitlriis dumb-founded. Sim e one twin is alive and well in New York and the other in Chicago, and as but two nie!1 bear this marvellous likeness to each other, who was the man he talked with at the Meadow Tavern and whose the body he saw- there? Ihe detective decides his brain is out of order, and on nig return" to New York goes to consult a specialist in nervous diseases. CHAPTER V. MEDICAL ADVICE AND WHAT CAME OF T^- "There is some trickery about all this, Mr. HeekwiLh. The speaker was Dr. Burton, one of New York's mos-t1 eminent brain specialists. On his return from that strange and fruitless quest to Chicago Beckwith had foUowed Hast- _I ings's advice and had consulted a physician. Dr. Burton had listened with close attention while Beckwith told the story of. his1 a lvenlure at the Meadow Tavern and the subsequent hap- penings. The detective had finished his narrative by spy- ing; — "You see, facts are all against me. doctor. The evidence of my senses is conclusively disap- proved. So I must be under some wild delu- sion." "There is some trickery here," said Dr. Bur- ton (nce more. "Then yoi^ don't think my with Fran- cis Hastings at the Meadow Tavern that nigbt was a hallucination?" "There is no haliucination about you," retorted Barton sharply.. "You seem to me as sane and matter-of-fact a person as I ever met." "Then how do you account, doctor, for my having met three men all exactly alike when I know there are only two who bear that special likeness?" The doctor pondered a moment. "This is rather in your own line than mine, Mr. Be ikwitli, he said at length. "It is.a case for a detective rather than for a doctor. The matter seems miraculous to you now, be- cause, all through, you have been haunted by an idea of the supernatural—by a half idea, too, that you were mentally deluded. This has ob- scured your naturally clear detective sense. Now that you know your mind is sound and there is no miracle about the affair, it will be easy to un- ravel. l'onder the matter carefully, and what seems so unintelligible now will proba bly sur- prise you by its very simplicity." "Then I will spare no time nor pains to thresh out the entire secret." "Go carefully. Mr. Beckwith. You have no ordinary criminal to deal with here: but, ap- parently, a highly educated and brilliant man. Were I in your place" "Well?" "Don't laugh. Mr. Beckwith, but, I'd like to solve this problem myself. Criminal investiga- tion has always been a fad of mine. In my pro- fession I meet strange experiences at times, and being only a physician I have no chance to trace them to their source." "Tell me your ideas, doctor," said Beckwith, fi.lling readily in with Burton's whim, "and I'll carry them cut and report progress." "Good! I'll be a sort of silent partner and furnish such ideas as I can and let you work Hit in out. But. for heaven's sake, Mr. Beckwith, keep my share of it quiet. It would never do to have my name appear in the case." "But it n:ay take much of your valuable time, doctor. This case may take weeks to work out." "It will be recreation to me after my dull professional work. Don't grudge me this little recreation. Mr. Beckwith." "Well, and your idea?" "In the first place, I am inclined to agree with your theory that Felix has passed himself off as Francis. "I've given up that idea," said Beckwith gloomily. I saw Felix in Chicago." "Hold on! We'll come to that later. I believe it was Felix you met here in New York. Felix, who called himself Francis and passed himself oil as Miss Price's fiancee. So far I believe you arc right. "But I saw him at Chicago! "Yes. yes! But the pretended Francis of New York and the real Felix of Chicago are one and the same person." "You mean, he followed me to Chicago?'" cried Beckwith, seizing the new idea. "No. lie preceded you. You never started till the morning after you found the body gone. He, I believe, left New York the same evening, reached Chicago, and bribed the proprietor of the G reycourt Hotel." "But why ? Whatwashis motive?" "Can't you see?" exclaimed Burton. "Felix wants to put a stop to your following up this case. From your own story it is quite likely he (either by his own hand or through the agency of Stein) killed his brother. Your unforeseen arrival at the Meadow Tavern that night compli- cated matters. You say they didn't want to let you in. Had you not come and seen the bcdv- afterward Francis would merely have vanished from the world, and no one would have been it bit the wiser. Felix, arriving at the tavern after you had gone to bed, probably knew nothing of your presence there. Then when you turned up at Miss Price's on Madison-avenue next day, just when he was congratulating himself on his good fortune in getting off so safely, he saw a new- source of peril, not only to his character, but to his life. He asked for a night's grace in begging you to wait till next morning before going to the Meadow Tavern again. During that night he went himself to that tavern and hid the corpse somewhere in the marshes." "Impossible!" "Just the same, I believe it so! Make inquiries as to Felix Hastinjs's movements on that night, and I'll bet my head you'linnd he went to Meadow Tavern." "That was the reason then," cried the detec- tive, ''that he was so ready to go there with me next morning!" "Exactly. He knew there was no evidence against him at the tavern. He might even be perfectly assured of throwing you off the track. But your obstinacy raised a new danger. You said you would go to Chicago and satisfy your- self as the existence of Felix. He got there on a train ahead of you, went to the, Greycourt Hotel (where no doubt he was well known), and bribed the proprietor to aid the deception. There be received you as Felix, just as, three days earlier, lie had received you in New York as Francis. Decidedly he is a clever man this Hastings. "But if I go directly to his rooms at the Bene- dict "You'll find Felix tlicrfrj no doubt." "But Chicago?" broke in Beckwith, who began to see he had been duped. A i "You fcrget the Felix of Chicago has gone to Kau Francisco on his way around the world and has left no address." What a fool I've beéll exclaimed Beckwith, jumping to his feet. ''I'[it a disgrace to ny trade. I see everything now!" "What do vou mean to do-" "Francis told me at the tavern that night that he had just arrived from Chili. That was the sixth of June. I'll go to the shipping agcicy that has already done some good work for me, and tind what boat he came by and what date. T!t fact established, I can soon prove Felix an imposter. "And cciucuiber," laughed the doctor, as he I showed Beckwith to the door. "I m a silent part- iie-, in this case. You're to report progress to 111e." Beckwith went to iii,, nearest telegraph office and sent two dispatches. Then he rang up the Benedict apartment house on the telephone. "Js Mr. Folk Haslings at home?" he asued cf the IjOY who answered the call. "No, sir," came the reply. "He went out ten minutes ago." a go. "Good!" mused Beckwith, "the employes at a big city apartment-house can't all be bribed like the proprietor of an obscure Chicago hotel. Felix is evidently m town.' H? strolled down Fifth-avenue to his apart- ments, and half an hour later received two telegrams. They were in reply to the two he had just sent. The first was from the proprietor of the Grcy- couri Hotel, Chicago. It ntH: "Mr. Felix Hastings left for San Francisco early this morning." The second was from the shipping bureau. Beckwitli's agent there had telegraphed:- "Only ship from Chili to New York thus far in June was the Balmaccda. Arrived morning of June 6. Francis Hastings's name is on pas- senger list." "This puts the matter beyond all doubt." exclaimed the detective. "If Francis Hastings arrived in America on June 6, he assuredly can't be the man now bearing his name in this city. As for Mr. Felix Hastings." went on Beckwith. looking again at the Chicago telegram, "he seems to have a charming faculty of being in two places at once. No, no! Felix Hastings did not leave Chicago for San Francisco. but for New York, and he left yesterday morning at the latest. and not to-day. Moreover, poor Francis Hastings is not at the Benedict, but at the bottom of some bog hole among the marshes that surround the Meadow Tavern." An hour later Beckwith was spinning rapidly on his wheel along the road that led to the lonely marsh-encompassed inn. Strangely enough his main thought was cf Vivian Price. Her pale, set face as she had made that same trip with Hastings and himself returned to his memory now with redoubted force. "Poor, poor girl he murmured, "she ;.1- readv begins to suspect him. I must save her at any cost. She, at least, could have been no party to the crime. That pure, high-bred face bespeaks a clear conscience. I shall save her despite herself from becoming a murderer's bride." Arrived at the tavern Beckwith left his bicycle on the porch aid entered the dark hallway. The mildewed parlour where lie and Francis had sat that night was as he had last seen it. The day was gloomy and no sunshine came through the broken, sbutterless panes to en- liven the prospect to lift the damp from the misused room. "As I'm likely to be here some time on t LiE search," thought Beckwith, "I may as well nave one decently comfortable room. A fire on this hearth would dry the air in no time." Suiting the action to the word he knelt at the hearth and began to clear away the piled-up a.shes in order to lay a new fire. Suddenly his hand closed on something that, lay among the fluffy white ash, and he drew i' out. He gazed long and earnestly at this grime- coated object. Then he started to his feet with a cry of joy- ful surprise? "On the track at last. thank heaven"' ha shouted. I (To be continued on Monday.^
