Pork was a shade dearer, and dull of sale. Veal was a quiet sale, and very dear. METROPOLITAN, MONDAY.—The total imports of foreign stock into London last week amounted to 9,888 head. The tone of the cattle trade to-day has been quiet. The supplies of stock have been good, both as regards number and condition, and with a slow sale, the quotations have favoured purchasers. The show of beasts, although rather less than on Monday last, has been quite an average, and the quality has continued good. In all breeds sales have progressed slowly, and prices have given way fully 2d. per 81b. The best Scots and crosses selling at 4s. 8d. to 4s. lOd. per 81b. Lambs have sold slowly, at from 6s. 4d. to 7s. 4d. per 81b. Calves have been quiet; and the market for Pigs has been inactive. MISCELLANEOUS. LONDON PROVISION, MONDAY.—The arrivals last week from Ireland were 359 firkins Butter and 3,747 bales Bacon, and from foreign ports 26,952 packages Butter and 2,223 bales Bacon. Owing to the favourable change in the weather prices of foreign Butter have declined S-. to 103. per ewt.; best Dutch 110s. Irish declined about 4s. per cwt., with the exception of fourth Corks. The demand for Bacon keeps steady, best Waterford supports its price, but all other sorts are Is. to 2s. per cwt. lower. LONDON HOP, MONDAY.—We have to report a better feeling in our market, which has imparted firmness to all classes of the new growth; and although operations generally have been limit- ed, there is a decided tendency to increased business. New Americans are slow of sale, but large parcels of yearlings have been taken np of late at the low figures current. In Trefoils, as well in English as foreign, prices are also too high to bring buyers forward, and stocks are much reduced. Fine qualities of Rapeseed command very high prices, select English qualities being very scarce. New white Mustardseed brings high rates. Good Canaryseed supports former values readily, choice samples being wanted. LONDON WOOL, MONDAY.—The demand for English Wool has not been active, and has been chiefly confined to lustres and demi-lustres. Prices, however, have ruled firm, and the yarn trade having continued steady, it is believed that the quotations will be maintained. Wool is bought to meet present requirements only, and prices show little, if any, change. Spinners continue to be badly employed, on terms which to them are very unsatisfactory. Manufacturers continue to feel the loss of the American market. They contrive just to keep themselves going, which is, perhaps, more than can be said of the spinners. TRADE INTELLIGENCE.
TRADE INTELLIGENCE. THE IRON TRADE. BIRMINGHAM, THUKSDAY.—The attendance of ironmasters to-day, although not quite equal to that of the previous Thurs- day, was again a large one, and the more- cheerful tone which has characterised the recent meltings of the trade was fully sustained. On the actual state of affairs reports are, as usual, rather conflicting, the smaller makers being still very inade- quately employed, whilst the leading houses are doing a very fair business but all parties concur in the belief that the worst is now over, and that better times are at hand for the Staffordshire iron trade than it has known for a long time. At the leadmg mills and forges the working week now extends on the average to four or five days, but this average is attained by very few of the smaller masters, and then only at a great sacnnce of prices. Native pig-iron continues in good demand, chiefly as a conse- quence of diminished importations from other districts, and prices in this branch are well sustained. In finished iron the kinds most in request are nail rods, hoop strips, and sheets. The rail manufacture of the district, though limited in extent, con- tinues very brisk, and it is not unlikely, therefore, that arrange- ments will be made for the extension of this industry. As notified last week, the engineer and solicitor of the Gloucester and Berkeley Canal Company again attended the meeting to-day, to submit a petition to the House of Lords in favour of the new project of that company, by which sea-going vessels of 2,000 tons burden will be enabled to reach the city of Gloucester. The existing ship canal will be used as far as available, but a new entrance will be cut into it from the river Severn at a point 16¡ miles below Gloucester, and new docks of adequate size will be constructed at its mouth. When completed, this canal will enable South Staffordshire goods to be taken, either by water or rail, alongside sea-going vessels at a rate of 6s. 6.1. per ton. The scheme was very cordially approved by the members present, aul the petition received numerous a -id influential signature
