A petition to the Governor of Louisiana for clemency to a man named Bazar, lying under sentence of death at New Orleans for killing a rival in his love affairs," is mainly grounded upon the fact that the prisoner is igno- rant, and that the murder arose "in a quarrel about a woman." But these reasons are more than matched by those assigned by the prisoner himself. In appealing t) the gov- ernor for mercy, the prisoner, with great candour, declares that he is "not ready to appear before his Maker." Then he adds—"Letme remind you that it is written in the sacred volume in emphatic language, binding on man and society, 'Thou shalt not kill. CATTLE. PETERBOROUGH, SATURD.Ay.-We ha,i a fair show of beef at market, and the trade ruled healthy, at the prices of this day week. Prime qualities of mutton were a little -dearer, prices ranging from 7id, to 8.1d.. per lb. There was a quiet trade for pork, which realised high rates. Veal i-caroe, and quite as dear. NOTTINGHAM, SATw"Ay.-There was a fair skow of beef at our market, and the demand proved healthy, nt prices varying from 6d. to 7d, per lb. Mutton was a quiet sale, and fetched quite as much money. Not much doing Sor pork, fur which high rates were realised. Veal a small shew, and high in priee. METROPGLITAN, MONDAY.—-The total imports of foreign stock into London last week amounted to 8,168 head. The con- tinued warm weather has had a somewb it depressing influence upon the cattle trade, and butchers have consequently had the advantHge. Business in the dead meat market hts been slow, but purchases of stock have been made sparingly. In many parts of the country store cattle have bpen forced upon the mar- ket in consequence of the soarcity of feed, aod v .lues have receded. There was not much falling off in the quality of the beasts exhibited here to-day, but the general cb.nraeter of the sheep on sale was inferior. From Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, and Cambridgeshire we received about 1,250 Soots and crosses; from other parts of England, inoluding Lincolnshire, 7:40 of various breeds; and from Ireland, about 911 oxen, &c. The arrivals of Sootch beasts were limited, and did not exoeed IS. Really choice beasts were without change in value, 5. per 8lb being the top prioe of beat Soots. All heavy breeds were dull, and lower to sell. There was a fair number of Sh< ep in the pens, but, owing to the deterioration in the quality of the animals, and the falling-off in the demand, the quotations were slightly easier. Large and inferior sheep were 2d, per Slh cheaper, but best, Southdown and half-bred wethers commanded last weekla cur- rencies, say 5s. 4d. per 81b. This price, however, was rather exceptional, good quality animals being soaroe. Lambs met a dull sale on rather lower terms, our quotations being now 6s. to 6s Sd. per 81b. The Calf trade was quiet at stationary currencies, but Pigs met a fair inquiry. MISCELLANEOUS. LONDON PROVISION, MONDAY.—The arrivals last week from Ireland were 1,500 firkins Butter and 3,681 bales Bacon, and from foreign ports 22,126 packages Butter and 3,034 bales Bacon. A further advance has been obtaiaed for Irish Butter, sales of fine Clonmels made at 118s. on board; the market closed firm but quiet, holders influenced by the high rates paying in Ireland. Foreign met a steady sale, Normandys further advanced 2s. to 4s. The Bacon market ruled quiet, but little alteration in value. LONDON HOP, MONDAY.—The same quiet tone, which we have reported so long, still prevails in our market. The last growth, although slow of sale, maintains recent values, but all other descriptions are offered at rather less money. Reports from the principal districts speak well of the coming crop, fly haviDg entirely disappeared rain, ho ever, is much wanted. Imports for the week ending 18th June, 50 bales, against 26 bales the preceding week. Latest advices from New York report the market as dull. The business doing is of a retail character, and oonfined to consumers' requirements." LONDON SEED, MONDAY.—The heavy showers that have fallen since the middle of last week have brought forward a few buyers for agricultural seeds. Foreign Cloverseed commanded fully as much money. English Trefoil was taken off steadily a quite as high rates. Fine English Rapeseed realised extreme prices, such being scarce, and wanted for sowing. White Mustardseed was also taken off steadily, at last week's currencies. Canaryseed brought previous values readily. Small foreign Tares remained saleable for feeding purposes, and the salesr effected were upon the fall terms of last week. LONDON WOOL, MONDAY.—There is not much animation in, the demand for English Wool, but values are on the whole sus- tained. Coarse hoggets' can be bought rather cheaper, but lustres and demi-lnstres are very firm in value. It was aiitici:iat< d that the appearance of the new clip would cause a reduction in prices. but such has net proved to be the case, an.1 so long as the present vitality in the yarn trade continues, there appears to be little room for apprehension of a decline in the quotations.
