SOUTH "WAIVES CALVIN I ST IC METHODISTS' ASSOCIATION AT LLANGEITHO. In former times the annual meetings of this Association were held regularly at Llangeitho, and always in the same field. This field, called Cae Scybor, which adjoins the road, is admirably adapted for out-door services, as it rises sharply from the spot where the preachers' stand is erected, and forms a natural platform, from which the people are able to see and hear without inconvenience. For those who preferred special accommodation, a stand was erected on the south side of the field, and for admission to this stand a charge was made. Many of the audience sat on the grass others occupied carriages and carts to the right and left of the preachers, while not a few brought chairs with them, and settled themselves down comfortably for the sermons. Two venerable old men retained their seats in a venerable four-wheel carriage, to which was attached a venerable horse. This carriage, with its low wheels, old- fashioned springs, and heavy intricate construction, was a curiosity in its way, and doubtless bore good men to association meetings when its Wednesday's occupants were little boys. Men and women—some of them very poor—had come long distances, and made great sacrifices to be present at the meetings in the little village of Llangeitho, made famous by Daniel Rowlands, whose memory is still as green as the yew trees that grow in the village square, and in the old churchyard where he was buried at the latter end of the last century. The village of Llangeitho is described by Meyrick in his history of Cardiganshire, as having been long celebrated as "the head quarters of those religious fanatics, com- monly called Methodists." The amusement caused by an intolerant sentence of this kind in less than seventy years after it was written shows how necessary it is to speak with caution, and all possible kindliness, of those who differ from us. The most bigoted opponents of Metho- dists would not in these days dismiss them as religious fanatics." They have faults and are trying to remedy them, but changes are never quickly made,{if wisely made, in old systems, whether political or religious. The river Aeron which flows near the town has to be crossed to reach the church, an old building which could not be injured by "restoration," and would be all the better for rebuilding. Four large sombre yew trees give character to the churchyard. The Calvinistic Methodist Chapel is as ugly as chapels in Wales usually are. On Wednesday the one at Llangeitho was made to appear a little more unsightly by reason of a liberal application of blue wash. The time will doubtless come when the leaders of the most influential religious community in the Princi- pality will build churches planned by architects possessed of some knowledge of ecclesiastical architecture. Religion is not promoted by ugliness of design, which by the way is as costly as beauty. The charms of the Vale of Aeron have been described in poetry amLprose many a time. How great and numer- ous they are can only be realized by men who have seen and compared them with more vaunted spots in Wales and elsewhere. The fertile land, well cultivated and thickly wooded, is more like a portion of one of the midland counties of England adorned with Welsh features. From the top of the hill, at the foot of which lies Llangeitho, the scene was one of peculiar beauty. A dozen shades of green bewildering tints of yellow. Hayfields, ripening corn, and bright green lines of young turnips. Hedgerows, radient with wild flowers and ricra in hazel nuts. Tregaron is four miles from Llangeitho, four long, but pleasant miles, through leafy lanes. Half way there is a public-house called the "Stags Head." Limpeter is nine miles from Llangeitho; Aberaeron thirteen Pont Llanio three. From these and scores of other places further afield, people on foot and by con- re v ances of different kinds began to arrive early in the m )rning. Until ten o'clock the weather threatened rain. The clouds clung to the hills and the wind blew fitfully. Happily towards ten o'clock the sky cleared, and before nO.)!1 the sun shone brightly at intervals. Amongst the more notable visitors were Dr. Edwards, Bala, Dr. Owen Thomas, Liverpool, Dr. Hughes, Liverpool, Dr. H. Jones, Trevecca, Dr. McEwan, Principal T. C. Edwards, Aber- ystwyth, and ministers from all parts of South Wales. The work of providing food for all that came, and lo J rings for all who were out of reach of home, were tasks not"easily performed but the arrangements, at any rate as regards food, wre very complete and reflected great credit on the organizing skill of Mrs. Davies, of Cwrtmawr, -who took the chief direction. She was ably assisted by A staff of ladies and gentlemen, young and old, who worked with a will and without confusion. The British school- room near the chapel was converted into a dining hall for the occasion. Hams, boiled and roast beef, legs and loins ef mutton, bread and potatoes, cheese and butter, milk and water were provided in large quantities. The room accommodated about a hundred at a time. The meat was all cut up, the waiters were thick on the ground, and as they knew' their work the labour of dining four or five kundred <niests was quickly and satisfactorily got through without loss of time. As soon as dinner was over tea. was •rovided by the same lady and with the same order and promptitude. In addition to those provided for at the schoolroom, hundreds were supplied with food, either at the public houses at moderate charges, or at private houses £ r,e of cost. Of course they could not remember Daniel Rowlands, whose p .rtrait hangs in some of their houses, and whose fame has made Llangeitho as familiar as household words, but oue old lady, was especially proud of the fact that her uncle had heard him many a time There were John Elias William Morris, Cilgerran, Thomas Richards, r ish- guard Morgan Howells, Tredegar, Henry Rees, John Prytherch, Pembroke, David Jones, Carnarvon, John Tone" Talsarn, John vans, New Inn, Ebenezer Richards Treearon John Phillips, Bangor, and a long list of others whose words are still remembered. Before the three o'clock services began on W ednesday, small knot of visitors from London and Manchester, tried sevtraf times to get up some singing. They de- served success, but did not achieve it £ r ttjeywei» left to sing aone, notwithstanding the fact that they pitched upon common tunes and were in the company of hundreds of men and women who could have helped them. About three o'clock a minister gave out a hymn and the service commenced. Of the meetings held during the day partic- ulars are given below:— _r.. The Executive Committee of the Home Mission met at Tregaron on Monday evening and Tuesday morning under the presidency of Mr. W. Griffiths, Blackwood, in order to receive the reports from the different stations, and also to consider applications for new grants in aid of weak churches. A total sum of P:,950 was voted to the several applicants, subject to the approval of the Assoc! .^rr,. On Wednesday-morning, at Llangeitho, seven preachers were ordained, when the Revs. W. Prydderch, W. J. Williams, and Dr. Edwards took part in the service. At one p.m. the delegates and members of the Association met at the Chapel, where several resolutions were passed. It was determined to make an effort to complete the collec- tion towards the Trefecca College fund as soon as possible. It was also determined to make an extra effort to collect money towards the "Ministers' Funds," whereby the liberal offer of Mr. D. Davies, M.P., might be claimed by the Association. The Rev. J. Jones, New Quay, was elected Moderator for the ensuing year. A resolution was passed expressive of the sympathy of the Association with the family of the late Sir T. D. Lloyd in their present bereavement. At three p.m. a public meeting was held in the open air, when the Rev. W. Prydderch and Dr. O. Thomas officiated. THE IRISH OBSTRUCTIVES IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.—EXTRAORDINARY SCENES. In anticipation of the continued sitting of the House of Com- mons during the whole of Tuesday night and Wednesday, com- plete arrangements were made by the Sergeant-at-arms and his colleagues in Tuesday night. The officers and messengers were relieved on relays, and the whips took steps to secure the attend- ance of members. The House sat continuously for 26,1 hours, the longest sitting on record. Shortly after seven o'clock, the Chancellor appealed to the Irishmen to give up a hopeless fight, but they refused. Mr. Parnell announced that he had Irish members coming over in a mail boat, and that Mr. Biggar had gone to sleep, and would soon return "like a giant refreshed." A correspondent of the Liverpool Mercury, writing on Wednes- day evening, says :-It is now ten minutes past six o'clock, and the House of Commons has just risen, after a continous sitting of twenty-six hours. This is a circumstai.ce altogether without parallel in the history of parliamentary procedure. It is on record that when Wilberforce carried his motion for the aboli- tion of slavery in our West Indian possessions he only succeeded aft, r a sitting of Parliament extending to 25 hours. In more recent times the House of Lords sat until close upon four o'clock on a Sunday morning, in order to receive and put on record the royal assent to an Act which suspended the Habeas Corpus Act in Iiel md. Later still, those Irish members of Parliament who are kuown as the obstructionist party compelled their co-legislators to sit until past seven o'clock in the morning. But n)w those gentry have surpassed all their previous performances, and Tuesday's sitting of the House of Commons has been protracted until nightfall on Wednesday. At half-past five o'clock yesterday evening the consideration of the South Africa Bill was resumed in committee at ten minutes past two o'clock this afternoon, Mr. Raikes, the chairman of committees, reported to the Speaker, amid tumultuous cheers, that the mea- suie, as it had come amended and purified from the crucible, had passed through committee. It was until a late hour last night that the tactics of the opposing forces were generally known. It then slowly dawned upon the opponents of the measure that the Government had araanged for relays of mem- bers sufficient in number to make and keep a house until the utmost limit of recorded time. It was therefore apparent that war to the knife must result, and, unless I am misinformed, telegrams flished to all parts of the kingdom to call bacK members whose absence might imperil the fortunes of the beleagured host. The Committee dragged its slow length along until four o'clock this morning, when Mr. Raikes, the chairman, was so utterly fagged out that he was compelled to surrender his functions to Mr. Childers, who stuck to his post until seven o'clock, and then vacated the chair in favour of Mr. W. H. Smith, the financial secretary to the Treasury. Mr. Smith succumbed at ten oc'lock, and was in turn succeeded by Sir H. Selwin Ibbetson, who is Mr. Cross's lieutenant at the Home Office. Uproar succeeded uproar during the long and dreary hours which intervened between this and ten minutes after noon, when Mr. Raikes re-appeared, amid the feeble cheers of a jaded house, and again occupied the chair until, as I have said, the committee was concluded, at ten minutes past two o'clock. It was rumoured in the course of this forenoon that decisive measures would be taken in order to put an end to obstruction, by the suspension from their functions of the three leaders of .the party but as the Marquis of Harting- ton had betaken himself to Goodwood races, and no other pro- minent member of the late Government hid the courage to take the bull by the horns, the Chancellor of the Exchequer refrained from any attempt to put in force the recent rule of the House, by means of {which wilful waste of time by obstinate legislators can be prevented. The Pall Mall Gazette, in its report of the proceedings of Par- liament during the contest with the Irish obstructives, gives a variorum reading of the observations of Sir P. O'Brien m the episode in the course of which he made use of a very strong "quotation." The Pall Mall Gazette says:—"Sir P. O'Brien made a remark to the effect that although Mr. Gray might be backed up by the power of the press, yet if they went together to their common parish priest, the rev. gentleman would say to the hon. gentleman, You have made a great humbug of your- self -41aughter)-and if it was not that your paper is dull in the autumn you would be a d-d fool.' (Cries of 'Order.') Called on to retract an unparliamentary expression, Sir P. O'Brien said, Quite so, sir; it is a quotation, sir,' whereas the House laughed loudly." The Dublin correspondent of the Pall Mall Gazette, writing at noon on Wednesday, says This morning, among all sensi- ble people, not excluding Home Rulers, the greatest indignation is expressed, particularly since last night's vulgar brawl in the House, at the injury felt to be done to Ireland by the Ultramon- tane section of Mr. Butt's following. Those who approve of it appear to be rather the fanatical than the Nationalist faction. There is some talk of a Dublin meeting to give expression to Irish opinion regarding it; but National politicians here, whilst indifferent to the work of agitators, are inexcusably timid in t 4 resisting them in any public manner. It is understood that there is a complete break-up of the Home Rule party, and a meeting of the Council of the League in Dublin will immediately be held on the subject of Mr. Butt's position. A struggle will then ensue between the two divisions of his party, which some think may even place Mr. Butt in a minority. The Dublin Morning Mail declares it to be a striking instance of poetic justice that the artifice of obstruction has broken up the party which relied upon it. The Mail advises that the oc- casion should be taken advantage of for a reform of the Irish representation by persons of position in society addressing them- selves boldly to the task of gaining the real sympathy of the people. The Government, as against the Irish faction, has the fullest support of both Liberals and Conservatives in Ireland."

ABERYSTWYTH. LADIES COLLEGATE SCHOOL.—By a printer's error it vvai wrongly stated in an advertisement last week, that this school would be re-opened on August 17th, instead of on the 7th. PETTY SESSIONS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1.—Before John Watkins, Esq., Mayor, Isaac Morgan, Esq., and G. T. Smith, Esq. Assault.—John Benson, fisherman, charged George Davies, also a fisherman engaged in Mr. Bamber's boat, with an assault. Complainant said that last Saturday he was at Mr. Bamber's settling his weekly account. Whilst there the defendant came in. He asked defendant I" What mtde you take the rope yesterday without my consent." Defendant then shook complainant and after- wards struck him in the face.—The Bench considered the charge proved and fined the defendant 10s., and costs. Di-anL-enness.-Thomas Jones, sawyer, charged by P.C. Phillips with having been drunk last Sunday afternoon in Shipbuilders'-row, was fined 5s. and costs.-Chas. Morgan Jones, labourer, charged with having been drunk last Saturday, and creating a disturbance on the Bridge at Trefechan, was also fined 5s. and cost. Shearing the Peace.—The case brought by Anne Jones, Northgate-street, against Mary Evans, Northgate-court, for using abusive language, and for having spread injurious reports respecting her bakehouse, was called on.—The defendant, however, did not appear, and a warrant was issued to compel her. School Board P?-osecu tion. -Richard Humphreys was further charged with having neglected to send his child to school.—Mr. J. W. Thomas appeared for the School Board, and asked for an order of the magistrates, author- izing that the boy might be sent to a reformatory school. He would prepare the necessary papers for their signature if they made the order.—After a short consultation, the Bench further adjourned the case in order to obtain addi- tional information.

CORRESPONDENCE. SOMEBODY'S BUSINESS. Sin,-Mav I ask the members of the Tregaron Sanitary Authority how long they intend to put up with the offensive and disgusting refuse which is deposited, in Chapel-street. If they have power they ought to exercise it in compelling the offenders to remove the same. This would speedily abate the nuisance, not only in that part, but in other parts which ought to be removed off tle pre- mises which; are surrouLded by human habitations.. We cannot expect the Authorities to do everything. They, like other men are subject to colds, sothatthasirsense, of smell may be occasionally not so acute as we could wish. Those who value their own and their neighbours' health should report those who have no regard for either; then Tregaron would be something similar to every other little iown, but I am afraid such vast charges will not take place until the next century.—I am, &t\, 31st July, 1877. TOWYN. THE FLOODS.—The water is gradually sinking, and the damage done to all the crops in the drainage district becomes more visible every day. Corn, hay, and all root crops on scores of acres have been entirely spoiled, and the pasture over hundreds of acres made of very little use for the present summer. The weather is still much inclined to be wet, and harvest operations very slow in consequence. It is now highly probable that in spite of the 'abundance of the hay crops, a dearth of well- harvested hay will be felt in the neighbourhood.

DYFFRYN. CORRECTION.—Mr. F. Marsh, station master of Dyffryn, writes to say that in our report of the case of Breach of the Cambrian by-laws," in our last issue, the defen- dant's name was given as "Elizabeth Davies, parish of Llanddwywe." An Eisteddfod was held in a large tent erected in a field behind the Dovey Valley Hotel, Cemmaes Road, on Thursday, August 2, under the distinguished patronage of Sir Watkin W. Wynn, M.P., Mr. C. W. W. Wynn, M.P., Sir Thomas Frost, of Dolcorslwyn, Mr. David Howell, Machynlleth, Mr. Owen Slaney Wynne, &c. Tanymarian filled the post of conductor, which the late Mynyddog was to have occupied. The adjudicators were —Poetry, Mr. R. Davies, Tafolog, and Mr. J. Ceiriog Hughes; prose, the Rev. D. Charles, B.A., F.G.S., F.R.G.S. music, Professor Parry., Mus. Bac., Cantab. handiwork, the Rev. R. Jones, Darowen, Mrs. Evans, Vicarage, Llanwrin, Mrs. Evans, Cemmaes, and Miss Jones, Darowen. The chairman of the committee was Mr. D. Evans, the treasurer, Mr. J. The marquee was appropriately deco- rated for the occasion by illuminated mottoes and designs on flags and shields. The attendance in the morning was not large. Owen, Trefeglwys, and Tanymarian. As a mark of re- spect to the deceased Mynyddog the artistes wore mourn- ing. The morning proceedings were commenced by a selection performed by the Cemmaes Brass Band,after which Tany- marian called on the Chairman to address the meeting. Mr. C. W. W. WYNN, M.P., then rose and was re- ceived with cheers. He said,—Ladies and Gentlemen.— I must, in the first place, express my deep regret that I am unable to address you in the language which is most familiar to you all. I had not the advantage which I be- lieve is the only means of acquiring that language by learning it in early youth; and I can only say in self- abasement and regret that I have been sorry for it ever since. When your committee first did me the honour of asking me to preside at the meeting this morning, I had some hesitation in accepting the invitation, because I doubted how far a man who had never written a line of poetry, and did not know a note of music, was a fit person to preside over a meeting, which, by its very name, is dedicated to both those arts. (Laughter.) At the same time, seeing how anxious your committee were to get a good meeting here, I did not feel at liberty to refuse such small services as my attendance might render. (Hear, hear.) It is too late in the day now to discuss the advan- tages or disadvantages of these Eisteddfodau. (Hear, hear.) They have embedded themselves in the hearts of the people of this country. They have flourished exceedingly since the time I can remember when, at four years of age, I was decorated with blue ribbon as a bard. (Laughter.) Since that time they have increased in number and strength, and now they are apart and parcel of the institutions of the Principality. Perhaps I may be called fanciful, but I do not think I am wrong in saying it, that I believe that in these early eisteddfodau may be traced the germs of the great institutions which have delighted the world in all the great capitals of Europe since the year 1851. (Cheers.) United with the poetry and music to which I have referred there has al- ways been a certain amount of interest shown, and prizes offered for handiwork in such classes as are commonly to be found among the inhabitants of the places where the eisteddfodau are held. The products of the country have been usually exhibited here on these occasions, and prizes- awarded for the best work. Now it is difficult, I think, to say in the face of this fact that these meetings were not the very beginnings and idea of the great international exhibitions. (Hear, hear.) Be that as it may there can be no doubt that these institutions have been of great and sterling advantage, not only to the immediate locality in which they are held, but to the Principality at large. It is on this account therefore that I have great pleasure in attending to foster, as far as I am able, that design. (Cheers.) Among other advantages—and they are many-which naturally follow from the literary part of the eisteddfodau, I think I may freely say that if in any way—whether by giving prizes, oriby competition, or by inducements of any kind-the young men of this country, or of any other, can be led to take an interest in the history and poetry which may have been lost for gen- erations, it is in itself a most valuablejjthing. (Cheers.) Much history has been illustrated by these remains, re- mains which would certainly have been lost had they not been preserved by some such means as this. Much of the early history of Wales is derived from the oral testimony of the bards. Printing was not; manuscript was scarce and precious, and it was from the oral evidence —from the songs and poetry of these bards in whom the learning of the country was at that time mainly deposited, that the traditions were handed down, reduced to writing from time to time, and it is from that that the greater and more reliable part of Welsh history is derived. (Cheers.) Another, and by no means a small advantage, independent of the good that society at large gets from the cultivation of these tastes, is to be found in the good literary, domestic, and if I may so say, quiet pursuits provided for the young men, upon whom, under providence, depends the welfare of this country for another generation. (Hear, hear). If half a dozen young men are kept by the influence of such an assembly as this, I will not say from the public house, but from the ordinary sports which generally fill up the scanty leisure hours of the working men, and induced to spend that time in better and more advan- tageous occupation, they would be richly rewarded. (Hear, hear). I do think that all those who promote meet- ings of this kind may have the benefit of stimulating the ambition and exciting the emulation of many young men, turning them to books to see from them the history of their forefathers to recall their achievements, and to excite them to emulate, to rival, and, if possible, to surpass those who have gone before them. (Cheers). These are no trifling things. Any society which promotes such things is deserving the assistance and support of the Principality at large, a support which, I am happy to say, has never been wanting. Referr- ing to the Carnarvon Eisteddfod, the_ President said he understood there was a likelihood of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales being present. He added—I am sure the welcome which he will meet, if he condescends to come down, will be such as to leave an impression which will never be effaced. (Hear, hear.) It is one of the few parts of his Royal Mother's dominions, which, I believe, he has scarcely visited. I think he was once at Penrhyn Castle for a night. I am corrected, however, by Sir Watkin, who says that the Prince of Wales attended a large meeting at Carnarvon. If he has been once, that is no reason why he should not come again. (Hear, hear.) His welcome will be none the less cordial. Indeed. I am sure it will be as cordial as the hearts and voices of Welsh- men can make it. I will not detain you longer, but ex- press my sincere wish that your meeting and many like it will be prosperous. (Cheers.) It was a dream;" adjudication on "Ffon Gollen," prize 2s. 6d., best, Richard Rider, Llanwrin, invested by Miss Evans, Cwmbychan. The winner presented the prize stick to the President, who remarked that he should keep it as a memorial of a very happy day. Competition in singing the song, Mi welaf mewn Adgof," prize 10s., two par- ties competed, best, the Maglonians,the leader, invested by Miss Frances Howell, Dolguog; adjudication of the Rev D. Charles on "Doethineb,' prize, one guinea, best, Evan Evans, Dolgelley; invested by Miss Francis, Brynaire; song from Mr J. Thomas's Cantata, Llewellyn, "Brave sons of Cambria," by Mr. Rowland Davies, U.C.W.; adjudi- cation by Mrs. Silvan Evans, on the best shirt, announced by the Rev. D. Morgan, Penegoes, gave the prize to Miss Jane Richards, Cwmlline; invested by the Rev. D. Morgan. The adjudicator remarked that the prize shirt was worked as neatly as if it had been done by a machine. Sir Watkin gave a sovereign to be divided among the non- successful competitors. Competition in singing the choru3, But the Glory of the Lord," prize £ 4, two choirs, the Cemmaes and the Machynlleth competed, and the prize was awarded to the latter. The leader, Hugh Lewis, was invested by Miss Hamer, late of Glanrafon. Com- petition in singing Myfi yw'r Adgyfodiad," by Mr. D. M. Evans, prize 5s., John Brynant (Eos Brychan), invested by Miss Jones, Fronygoes, Machynlleth. This ended the morning programme. Sir WATKIN, at the invitation of Tanymarian, addressed the assembly, remarking his pleasure at attending the Eisteddfod, and adding that he was strongly of opinion that meetings like the one he saw before him, for which the competitors .had to study and prepare, was one of the many means which ought to be encouraged to keep people at home, and promote sobriety. (Cheers.) Successive Governments, and he might say, the whole! people of the country for many years had a wish of lessening the excessive drinking of the country. He would not enter into the different plans but would remark that the preparation necessary to enabla anyone to com- pete at such gatherings, at whioh there waa no encourage* ment for excess, was extremely beneficial. (Cheers.) He ] had been informed that at the Great Wrexham Eisteddfod the police had not the least troubfe with the enormous number of people who attended, Tney had of late years almost always seen tfoeir friend and neighbour present at such gatherings. He meant Mynyddog. Unfortunately he had been taken away from them. He had made a handsome bequest prior tohisdeceasefor the advancement of music intheir coumty. There was a question, first of all whether any memorial should be made, and next what that memorial should con- sist of. He (Sir Watkin) should think there was no more fitting memorial than to supplement that bequest, and to carry out the wish which seemed the latest in .Mynyddog' mind. That was to apply any subscriptions they might be able to give to promote the musical education of this county. (Hear, hear.) Mynyddog had made his bequest to the county of Montgomery, but he (Sir Watkin) did not think the College to which the bequest was given, and the near neighbourhood of the county to Car- diganshire, should prevent their not confining the sub- scriptions to Montgomeryshire. It waa most likely, and, in fact, they all trusted, that the subscriptions would come from all parts of the Principality, seeing that the good which it would produce would be spread all over the country. (Cheers.) A vote of thanks to the Chairman, proposed by Sir THOMAS FUOST, having been unanimously carried, the PRESIDENT replied, and the meeting separated after the singing of the National Anthem. The afternoon meeting was commenced at two o'clock, under the presidency of Sir Thomas Frost, and, as in the morning, the conductorship of Tanymarian. The attendance was very large. After the band had played a selection, Tanymarian presented Sir Thomas Frost with a handsome walking stick, the work of one of the competitors. The PRESIDENT then stepped forward and said—Ladies and Gentlemen-Happily for me, upon these occasions it is not ex- pected of the Chairman to make a long speech, so I intend availing myself of this privilege. I feel called upon, however, to express the gratification it gives me in being occasionally among you, even if it is only to prove the respect and admiration I feel tor the character and superior abilities of you Welshmen, and I, a native of Chester (which is held to be the capital of the northern Principality)feel proud to be reckoned one of your coun- trymen, whether by birth or appropriation. (Cheers.) Though not my wish, it is my present business to touch upon politics. I cannot help thinking that the nation at large would do well to take a leaf out of the book of your peace-loving countrymen, and though differing politically from Lord Derby, I may say never did he utter such a truism as when he said. "The greatest of British interests is the interest of peace. (Cheers.) Now judging by the light calendars of crime in the Principality, I say that Welshmen are an example worthy of all, and there is no doubt that the sintellectual preparations necessary for these Eisteddfodau go far towards elevating their minds, for as the old verse says, Satan finds some mischief still for idle hands to do." (Cheers.) I cannot help recalling since our last meet- ing of this kind what havoc death has made among some of our active members. How well I remember the interest our late Rector and his wife took in those proceedings, and what a loss Welsh literature has sustained in the late Mr. Richard Davies, whose reputation will never die. However, it is to be hoped that younger and rising men will be found to emulate these worthy examples. (Applause.) Addresses were then delivered by the bards, including Mrs. Jones, Manchester, Mr. Thomas Jones, Llanbrynmair, Mr. J. Adams, Barmouth, and another. Then followed what was in- tended to be a brass band competition, but only one band put in an appearance, and played O Father, whose Almighty Power," for which a prize of £ 2 had been offered. Professor Pany atljudicated, and awarded the prize to the Corris Brass Band, the leader of which, Mr. Humphrey Roberts, Dolgelley, was invested by Miss Sarah Griffiths, Rectory, Machynlleth. Solo on the Welsh harp by Mr. Bennett Owen. The selections, which included The break of day," and "Dafydd y Garreg Wen," was taste- fully executed. The ancient ceremony of chairing the bard then ensued. The prize was won, together with a money prize of five guineas, for a pryddest on Addysg," (Education). Tany- marian having summoned a number of bards on to the plat- form, including the Rev. D. S. Evans, Llanwrin, Mr. Bennett, Trefnant, Mr. Richard Rees, Maldwyn, lolo Trefaidwyu, and R. D. Jones, Machynlleth, Tafolog read the a Ijudication, and announced that Mr. David Adams, Talybont, was the winner. Then Mr. Adams ascended the platform, the band play- ing "Se& the conquering hero comes," and, Lady Frost having invested the champion, the chairing was proceeded with, with all the pomp and circumstance of the ceremony. Then followed a song by Professor Parry, Glyndwr," accom- panied on the pianoforte by his son, Haydn ftrry. Adjudication on spitaphs to the late Mr. Richard Price, of Dolaugwyn, Towyn, prize £2 2s., given by his son, Mr. R. G. Price, Towyn. Tafolog read the adjudication, and annonnaed that none was worthy of the prize seven specimens were sent in. An import- ant competition came next on the programme. It was for a prize of jE7 and a baton to the conductor, for singing "Gloria in excelsis." The Cemmaes and- the Machynlleth choirs competed. Professor Parry, adjudicating, said the time oi the first choir was very good and steady throughout the whole chorns, neither too fast nor too slaw. In that way they gave the dignity of character which properly belonging to the chorus. The intonation was. very full and rich, and the reading was faultless. The rendering, throughout was, indeed, most satisfactory. The second choic contained some very good voices, especially in the soprano, parts. The time, however,, was taken so very fast, beginning rapidly at the end of the first page, by which they avoided sustaining the top g's in sopranos- The ending on page 21, before they returned to the ordinary. key of C major, when they went out of the key of A flat was not perfectly in tune. In point of reading and quality of voice, the second choir was- very good. The prize would be given to the first choir, the Cemmaes Choir. The announcement was received with applause. The leader, Mr. Evan Evans, was invested, by Mrs. Howell, Dolguog. Nefydd Aled, Llannefydd, Rhvi, took the prize of 10s. for the best song of welcome to Mr." aid Mrs. Mynyddog Davies, on their return from America. A vote of thanks to Sir Thomas Frost for-presiding, moved by Mr. Davies, Dolcaradog, and seconded by Mr. Richard Jones, Machynlleth, having been carried with acclamation, Sir Thomas responded, and the meeting concluded by the singing of God Bless the Prince of Wales. In the evening a concert was given in the; marquee where the Eisteddfod had been held. Mr. David Howell presided, and Tanymarian again conducted. THE MEMORY OF MYNYDDOG. After the morning Eisteddfod, an interesting meeting was. held in a small chapel adjacent, with a view of deciding in what form the memorial would be got up. Sir WATKIN stated that Mynyddog was a name that would always be associated with the name of his country. He died a young man, a little over forty, but no one was deeper- rooted in the affections of his couiiirymen, and had he lived a hundred years he could not have increased his popularity, nor make himself more universally beloved. He was fond of music and poetry,, and whatever the opinion of the meeting might be, he was more in favour of giving scholarships 0 and substantial aid to education than looking at cold marble and magnificent statuary, be those works ever so beautiful to the eye and beneficial in their tendencies. Mynyddog himself frequently felt the want of early education, and though by industry and stealth he became a good Welsh scholar, and obtained a tolerable knowledge of English, his sym- pathies were keener and keener every day with those who struggled at the bottom of the ladder. It was proper, when deciding the form his memorial would take, to consider in what direction they couldgo, so as to be in perfect harmony with the tastes and desires of him who had departed. Sir Watkin was of opinion that a musical scholarship, associated with Mynyddog's name, and a marble memorial, in the shape of a bust or a tablet, as the funds would afford, placed in the College at Aberystwyth, would be a fair and wise disposal of the fund which they were about creating by appealing to Mynyddog's friends for sub- scriptions. Mr. D. Davies, M.P., Mr. Chas. W. W. Wynn, M.P., Sir Thos. Frost, Captain O. M. Crewe-Read, R.N., Rev. Rd. Jones, Darowen, Messrs. Owen Slaney Wynne, W. Francis, D. Howell, Ceiriog Hughes, N. Bennett, Wm. Pughe, David Evans, and others, entered into the subject at some length, and the following resolutions were unanim- ously agreed to, after being duly proposed and seconded: 1. That a subscription be entered into for the foundation of an exhibition in the University College of Wales, open to the Principality, to encourage and develop musical talent. 2. That a memorial be placed in the College to com- memorate Mynyddog's generous- bequest to the University .for this and kindred purposes. We have already stated that Mynyddog in his will pro- vided towards the erection of his own tombstone, and his friends with the t40 so bequeathed intend to raise over his grave a Broken Harp in relievo of granite.

THE REV. JOHN PETER, F.G.S. (lOAN PEDR.) The following paper by Professor Rhys appears ia the current number of Y C'mamrodor At the request of the Editor I have undertaken to write a lem- wordslrespecting my lamented friend Mr. Peter. As my personal acquaintance wifte him was of comparatively recent standing, I hare had to copy most of the jottings that follow from the various notices wbteh his unexpected death on the 17th of Jan. last called forth inmr Welsh periodicals, especially the JSeimiad for the month of Apfil. For a dtetailed account we have to wait until the biography sf her husband, which it is the intention of Mrs. Peter to write a* soon as her health will permit, has been published. Mr. Peter was born at Bala on the 10th of April, 1833; his father was an intelligent man, who followed the vocation of a millwright; to which Lie son was also brought up. The latter learned his work so thcroughly that his friends felt that they had lost a skilful workrrmi when he turned his attention to other things. As in the case cJI so many otisers of Cambria's most dis- tinguished sons, so in th;it of Mr. Pete", it was through the in- strumentality of a literary society that, it,Vas discovered that he had- a talent for work of a. higher order. The first occasion of his attracting public attention, was that of his winning a prize for poetry ottered by the Merioneth Literary Society; but, unlike many of our countrymen who continue all their lifetime to turn into verse what they know instead of acquiring knowledge of things they do not know, Mr. Peter passed: on to the rank of a student, whose thirst for learning ine-ver, knew any bounds. This was most opportunely met by the appearance of Cassell's Popular Educator, which he devoured as fast as it appeared. But, unlike another Welshmau, whose taste for languages was similarly called forth by the Popular Educatxrr., Mr. Peter read with equal, delight the non-linguistic portions of it, and thereby laid the foundation of the very- varied knowledge on which he continued to, build during the rest of his life.. Special mention must here be made of his study of geology, which secured him the honour of being made a Fellow of the London Geological Society It was' when lecturing on geology in Anglesey some fifteen years ago that the present writer first saw and heard Mr. Peter, and it was à propos of his labours in that branch of study that a Welsh barci sang the appropriate lines :— Tor-og haenau tir Gwynedd,-haen as haen, 0irlieiniai i'r fodfedd Gwelai ger y graig dal gref, Qed hono wrth ei dannedd." But of all the various subjects which had an interest for him, the one to which he grew most attached, and to which he would probably have devoted all his leisure time had he lived longer, was that of Celtic philology, more especially the study of the Welsh language and Welsh antiquities. Every one who knows anything about comparative philology must know that in order to study one language out of a family of kindred, tongues, he must provide himself with a knowledge more or less perfect of as many as possible of them. So Mr. Peter was not content with his native Welsh and the English he picked up at school, ibut pro- ceeded to learn German, in connection with which the following anecdote is related, as serving to show that, like all other men who have left their mark behind them, he, also, was pos- sessed of a will and force of character not .to be overcome by difficulties.. One fine afternoon at Bala his attention was called to a band of Germans playing in the street he noticed that they looked cleaner in their persons and more respectably clad than the ordinary strolling musicians who pass in this country as German bands and that made him anxious to speak to them, which he did, greatly to the surprise of the lookers on, in a language which they knew to be neither Welsh nor English—it was his first trial of his German. He learned from the foreigners that they were brothers, the sons of a small farmer in the neighbourhood of Stuttgard, and that they did not make music their profession, but merely the means of enabling them to travel through this country on the cheap. He had another interview with them in the evening, when they pressed him to come to see them in Germany, and promised him a hearty welcome. From that moment he resolved to-save all the money he could, with a view to visiting Germany,, and it was not long before he surprised a friend of his who lived in London by an unexpected, call on his way to the Continent. In due time he reached his German friends, whom he found as good as their word; but, after spend- ing a few days with them, he took up his quarters afiihe house of a gentleman, who helped him to perfect his knowledge of German. By and by he had to turn homewards, as. his money was beginning to run short; but, for the sake of. seeing the country, and studying the habits of the peoples he passed, he appears to have travelled a great part of the way toi Oster.d on foot, and to have got somewhat out in his reckoning,, as he found himself at Folkestone with only a few coppers in his pocket. With some difficulty, however, he reached the hoase of his friend in London; whence he managed to get How he acquired his knowledge of French, Italian, and Spanish, I have not been told; but, as to Greek and Latin, he studied tht-m at the Bala Independent College,, where he was not only prepared for the ministry in connection with the religious body of that name, but also enabled to become one of the tutors of the College, a post which he held to the day of his death. Although he was always hard worked, he managed to pursue without interruption his favourite studies in Celtic philology, and to write a great deal in various periodicals. Among other recent products; of his pen may be mentioned a review in our Welsh quarterly,, Y Traethodydd, on the Gram- matica Celtica," in which he established his name as a Celtic glottologist; an article on Welsh Phonology," published in the lievue Celtique, edited by :\1:. Gaidoz in Paris; and another rich in instances, on "Welsh Particles," in the first number of the Cymmrodor, as to which,, it may interest our readers to know, he wrote to the Editor a short time before his death as follows I am glad to see the first number of the C-ifmmrodor looking so well, and especially the reprint of Salesbury's Dic- tionary. This is really splendid; and if all feel as I do, although I am poor, you would bring out the parts monthly instead of half- yearly." But it would be impossible, within: the space at our disposal, to give the reader any account of the numerous and varied writings of Mr. Peter, extending oven the last twenty years of his life, and we have no exact information as to what he may have left behind in manuscript ready for publication. But one may venture to say, that enough has already been published to prove that all we have read formed but a prelude to greater works, which he could not have failed to produce had his life been spared. Before Ieavingthis point, I may add that, besides Welsh philo- logy, he devoted his attention to Welsh archfeology; and that, in his travels, he was constantly on the look out for old manuscripts and ancient inscriptions. One of. the last opportunities which the present writer had of enjoying his society was on- an excur- sion to examine an early inscribed stone near Llandudno; but he had before been in the habit of giving me information as to the nature and the whereabouts of similar monuments in different parts of the Principality. As a man, he was unobtrusive, kind, naturally polite, and a born gentleman, But resolute and. persevering. In the Eistedd- fod he took his stand on the side of honesty and common sense. News has been received by Mr. Layard which confirms the Turkish victories at Plevna. Russian forces numbered 40,000 men. The object of the attack was to force a route to Sofia. The British Embassy received also news of tniiaportant Turkish victory at Eskis Zaghra. The Standard's s-econd edition contains a Shumla tele- gram, stating that the Russians are falling back and concen- trating on the river Jantra.

GENERAL. On Thursday morning, application was made. by the Attorney-General to have the trial of the Penge case fixed. The Lord Chief Baron said that the Lord Chief Justice would probably take the case next Tuesday at the, Central Criminal Court. Two hundred soldiers left Sheffield for Grimsby on Thursday morning, where a riotous mob, 6,000 strong, was wrecking property. Lord Burgley has issued his address to the electors of Northamptonshire, in the Conservative interest. He says with regard to the Turkish War he advocates strict neu- trality. While he approves the policy of th& Government, he regre-ts, that the state of the finances had checked the scheme for the relief of local taxation. At Monmouth Assizes on Thursday, James Brown, thrice mayor of Newport, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment under the Bankruptcy Act, for issuing a fraudulent bill of sale.

At the Swansea Assszes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, July 24, 25, and 26, this case was heard, and resulted in a verdict for the plaintiffs on every point raised. Mr. Griffith Jones, solicitor, Aberystwyth, iii, structed counsel for the plaintiffs, who sotiat to recover several farms, part of Heldre estate. The defendants' counsel were instructed by Mr. W. H. Thomas, Aberyst- wyth. The plaintiffs tried to obtain p'ossession on former occasIOns, wt verdiots were given against them. We turn our attention now to-a number of minor au- thors who balong to Lessing's x<!hoel, those who endea- voured to imitate his excellent prowvstyle, that wonderful style of language which is found iJ. Lessing's didactic and Pyemic writings,. the il Laokoon, the Dramaturgic th "Education of Mankind," the "Dii;courses on Eree- masronry," and others. Whilst, therefore, all the imitators' of Flopstock are- exclusively poets, composers of yrical. poetuyor poetical narratives, the followers of Lessing are- almost exclusively prose-writers, authors, of didactic and philosophical work: popular philosophers, all distinguished by a very lucidandat-really classical style, like their master, iiessma and therefore well deserving to !e kept gratefully in the treasure of OIl" national literature. From the large number of these popular prose-writers I-sefcct seven, and- first of all, ISicolai (^TSS-lSll) a bookseller in Berlin and< Lessing'a friend, but upon the whole a very shallow man., His best known work is- A Journey through Germany- and Switzerland, a,ul his best novel i? «Sebaldus Natliankes (1770-76), but, his most valuable services to. German literature were rendered, not by his writings, but by the numerous-reviews and biographical works, he started as boakseller for instance, the- Literary Letters," which Lessing- contributed, the General German Library," extending to five volumes, and others. The second writer of this school is Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786), Lessing's best friend, one of the noblest characters in the' whole German literature, and at the same time one of Germany's best popular philosophers. His peculiarity was that-he under. stood in a very remarkable way how to combine- philoso- phic truths with a plain and yet highly elegant style in the form of letters, dialogues or short essays. He was a Jew and remained a faithful Jew throughout his life. He resisted all rude endeavours to convert him to Christianity, but lie was more Christian, in spite of his Jewish religion, in all his actions and writings than many of the most pious and devout Christian clergymen of his time. He contended that the highest utility must be tound not in subtle dogmas, but in moral philosophy, and he expressed those convictions in many elaborate and powerful works, for instance, in the Morning Hours or lectures on the existence^ God'' (1785), "Jerusalem,' or the Religious Power and Judaism" (1783), and in his principal work, Phaedon, or the Immortality of the Soul" /1r:i!9\ i-w uo;, a series 01 very interesting and charming dialogues, partly translated from Plato, but with many original addi- tions and amplifications. The third writer of this class is Georg Von Zimmermann (1728-1793), a native of Switzer- land studied in Bern and in Gottingen. and was appointed physician in ordinary to th<» royal court of Hanover.
