THE SWANSEA, FRIDAY, Oct. 18. >—i— THEATRE, SWANSEA. Mr. PHIT.I.IPS has the pleasure respectfully to announce to the Public, that MRS. EDWIN, from the Theatre-Royal, Dublin, is engaged to play Six. NjGH'rs at this THBATKE. It is unnecessary for him to enlarge upon her 'merits as. an Actress,—the'discernment of the town has long sirice discovered, and acknowledged Hem; he is, however, much pleased in being able to termi- nate his season with what he humbly conceives will be a general gratification. Something inexplicable appears in the conduct of the Elector ol Bavaria, whose troops, it will be seen, in direct coatridkuoii to what we had been led to suppose, have joined the French. Prussia while resolved to maintain astrie tneulrality, is saul to be endeavouring to preserve the tranquil-. lity of the continent, by her mediation with the belligerent powers in favour of peace. We feel the sincerest pleasure in announcing the arrival of the Janmica. and'Leeward Island fleets. Soine losses are. said to.have been-'sustained, but, on the whole, little cause exists fór complaint, and nmchi.orexutta.tion. Arrived-here. Col. Mackey, Mr. and Mrs. Howes, Mr. Brady, Miss Gwynne, &c. &c. Mr. \V. IL Grove, second son of Mr. Wm. Grove, merchant, of this town, is appointed Purser of the Essex Ea..st-Indiaman, CapL G. Bonham. We leel much pleasure in announcing the arrival of that fascinating actress, Mrs. EJwin, who has been engaged to perform a few nights on our boards, for the gratification of the amateurs or dramatic excellence. AU attempts to panegyrizethis chann- insg, daughter ofThdia would be highly superfluous, as the ibhabitants of this town havclongappre- :I ciated the value of her exertions; but we cannot e conclude without offering our tribute to the atten- tion ot Mr. Phillips, in thus closing his present theatrical campaign here with such a meteoric dis- play of talent. A very neat Theatre is now fitting up at Havcr- fordwest by Mr. Phillips, our manager, which will open early in November, when the admirers of the drama may expecta succession of novelty. Official notice has been received, by Stephen Jones. Esq. Swedish Vice Consul at this port, that the blockade of the Elbe and Weser-has been dis- continued and he has been directed to notify to the masters of such Swedish- ships-, as are now or may arrive here, that the navigation of those rivers is now, free. Amongst the promotions consequent on the death of Gen. Rooke/Gen. GascoYHe has obtained the ? th West-India regiment, vice Gen. Don, ap- pointed Colonel of the 96th foot.. I he Monmouth and Brecon militia marched on Sunday from Lewes for Bletchington. Their noble Colcnel, the Duke of Beaufort, and his family, were expected to leave Rottingdean about the middle of this week tor London. Last week, the Loyal Mold Volunteers were in- spected by Lieut.-Col. Hare, who expressed him- self in the warmest terms of approbation on the .steadiness and regularity with which they acquit- ted themselves in all their manoeuvres, and ex- prcssed. his opinion that their meritorious exertions would soon place them on an equality with any corps in the kingdom. Saturday last, the Montgomeryshire Legion and the Rhuabon Volunteers were reviewed in their exercise ground at Shrewsbury, by Brigadier Ge- neral William's, and acquitted themselves to his entire satisfaction. After they had quitted the ground, the cavalry marched in and went through the whole of -their evolutions- in a style equaflv. creditable. On Monday the whole of- the troops marched for their respective homes. ,A large ship, (name unknown) loaded with raw hides and leather from Ireland, was drove on shore on Saturday last, near St. David's Head; there is on hope of getting her off. A chace unequalled, we believe, in the annals of sporting, took, place in Glamorganshire a few days since. A deer having leaped over the paling of of Lantrythid Park, was soon pursued by. three dogs, which were afterwards joined by several others but though repeatedly turned, the deer eluded the hounds, and after scouring the country for many miles, made for the se^-shore, where, finding it im- possible to escape, he plunged from t,rocli, into the sea: he was followed by three oti-he dogs, who I swam alter hiiii a diSt&ncc-, 1.ve areinfurmcd, of more than two miles, when Lie houud's guv« up the pur- f suit, and returueti to the shore so much exhausted as to render it necessary for them to be carried houie. We hope to he gratified with, further parti- culars of this extraordinary chace in time for our next paper.. The. Whatisa little extraordinary, when he was first discovered, he was found standing nearly -upright in the water, with.his hat on his head and his staff in his hand. An Inquest was held -on the'body on Mond-iy, and the jury rettiroed a. verdict, of acci- dental death; This is. the second, fatal accident" which has happened on this canal within the last twelve months tbroughiucbrictv. A large meteor, resembling a; ball of fire, was observed to fall in Shrewsbury-, on Motulay evening last, about nine o'clock the ligl.it produced hy it, was so great that very smill bbjec.s could beuis- tinguished in the road. A man and are travelling the country in hired gigs, which they sell at-convenient distances to strangers, under'the pretext that they have no further occasion for them. A person passing through Chester to Giocester, on Saturday last, with a gig and horse he had bought from them, was, to bis surprise, deprived,at them by the owner. A similar fraud took place at Birmingham a tew days since. I_IIS Mr. John C<-boill~This person, whose flight from his credttors-wivh a considerable sum of mo- ney we noticed in our last, is in a fair way for be- ing brought to justice for his nefarious conduct. A fetter has been received by the Mayor of Gioces- ter, from the Procurator Fiscal of Edinburgh, sta- ting that a person exactly answering Colwfll's des- cription, had applied, under a fictitious name, to one ol the principal banking houses there, request- ing they would purchase stock for him to the a- mount of about 12on1. in the 3 per cents, to cover 'which he deposited in their hands notes and cash to the amount of lOoli. 2s, the greater part of which was in Giocestcr and other country notes. The circumstance of so many Giocester notes be- ing offered, combined with the news of Cohvni's supposed robbery and murder, excited in the minds of the gentlemen. at Edinburgh a. suspicion that this man was implicated inthat affair. These sus- picions, with their causes, were communicated to the Procurator Fiscal, who directed a vigilant eye to be kept upon the stranger, until intelligence re- specting him could be obtained. The necessary information has accordingly been communicated, and little doubt is entertained .of the culprit being speedily brought before the injured individuals he has attempted to'deirand. Hay Fair, on Thursday last, owing to the bad- .ness of the weather, was but thinly attended. High prices were demanded for horses and cattle, but few ot either were sold. Butter sold frum 10s. 6d. to 13s. per stone of 12lo. Best Cheese from Si. 10s. to Hi. lQs. 1-d.and good family Cheese from 38s. to 48s. per cwt. the greater part of which went off readiiy. Chester; fair, on Thursday last, Was well sup- plied with horses, horned cattle, and swine good horses sold high, but beasts of every ether kind were considerably on the decline; Hops were in much greater quantities than couid have been ex- pected, and prices of old ones were from six to se- ven guineas, and new sold as high as 31.15s. The bleaching season having been uncommonly fine, Irish linens were in the highest perfection; but the bleaches which were in great demand kept up their prices; this, however, was counterbalanced by the peculiar goodness and quality ot the linen: much cloth was not brought to the fair, and infe- rior linens were materially lower. The business of Wevhili fair opened very flat on Thursday. There was little leather on the hill, and what was sold did not bring such high prices as the fanners expected. The shew of horses was numerous, but by far the greater number of in- ferior description. Horses of' any figure or bone, brought high prices, particularly carthorses; others were scarcely saleable at any price.—The shew of Hopson Friday was also scanty, and little or no business was done. on that day. Saturday the growers and buyers began to talk of dealing, but each hung off, and the Hops remained over for sale on Wednesday. The prices of those sold were, Farnham pockets 151. to 151. 10s.; prime as high as 161. to 161. 16s. Per country Hops the prices asked were 121. 12s. to. 111. l is. Kentish ri. -to fir 10s. but very few were sold.-—The supply of Cheese was plentiful, and many London dealers attended half-coward sold from's-isi to 40s. and coward-milk from 50s. to Ms. A few dairies were sold at 56s. and old cheese at 80s. per cwt.
