THE CvAMMR'lviJY. ,
THE CvAMMR'lviJY. SWANSEA, FRIDAY, Jan. 3. The afflicting intelligence, brought hythe French and Dutch journals sillceonr last, affords us our-e for the deepest regret. 'All our ruost sarn t 1 1 nopes respecting the efficiency of* i war have been disappointed and again we are -com pel lea to behold tije of, umphing over the fallen-fortunes ot tV \) of Austria. But while we lament the- h't 'jiiiaM ni rn i losses wnich our allies have experienced while we L_ [' are obH^od -td give reluctant, credit to the facts themselves-, we ure hy -no^meaus clistios.eiito Uj- IJieve that the referses susuii .red are so-extensive as I represented; but till the arrival of the Hamburgh mails due, -which"is anxiously expected, we shuii not be able to learn the real state of affairs, nor to controvert any falsehoods which French invention may have communicated. Still, disposed as we feel ourselves to leave some room for hope, we must express our tears and our'belief* that the war 011 .the Continent is terminated !—that our expec- tations from that quarter are completely frus- trated^—that the whole Continent of Europe must bow their necks to the iron yoke of the tyrant of Fiance .'—and that England alone, proud distinc- tion confiding in the strength of her internal re- sources, the valour of her troops, the energies 01 her subjects/and the justice of her cause, must again contend, as heretofore, single-handed, with the enemy of mankind. Nor, in this prospect, can we see cause for despondency; our hopes should rise as our dangers increase, and while the genuine spirit of liberty is the master-spring which actuates our conduct, we shall present an impenetrable phalanx, the admiration of beholding kingdoms, to every attack, however impetuous. The consequences of the glorious victory of Tra- falgar now shine with a tenfold brilliance—its ef- fects in reducing the naval power of France may be more correctly appreciated: that fleet whic'h might have convoyed the invading battalions to our shores exists no longer—the combined squa- drons which were to have covered us with shame and themselves with glory, are metamorphosed in- to a gem, whose imperishable brightness3 shall eternally irradiate the British crown. Let us then, wdth united firmness and resolution, prepare to meet every exigency—let us look for- ward with increasing confidence to the prospects of futurity—and under the direction of the Disposer of events, we shall in the end triumph, and establish our tame on an adamantine base—a proud memo- rial to our posterity, and an awful memento to those powers which m-ty hereafter attempt to un- dermine the liberties, or compass the ruin of Great Britain. Friday last, being the festival of St. Jofin. the Society of Freemasons met at their Lodge, at the Tiger-inn, in this town, where a sumptuous din- ner was provided on the occasion. After the cloth was removed a number of select and appropriate toasts vere and amongst other the folluw- iog—The King ail si the Craft—His Royal High- ness George, Prince of Wales, Grand Master of Masons-—Earl Moira, acting 6rand Master for Eng- land—T. Strachan —■Surviving-officers: and crews of the late Lord Ne'l- son's fleet-Sir J. B. Warren—Duke of Beaufort— Corporation, of Svvanseat—Trade of Swansea, &c. The remainder of the evecing was spent with the utmost conviviality and decorum, and at ten o'clock the whole of-th6" company withdrew. The following is a copy of the address presented to his Majesty by the Mayor of Carnurthen, in consequence of the late brilliant naval victories :— To the King's most excellent Majesty. We, the mayor, recorder, town-clerk, aldermen, bur- gesses, and inhabitants of your ancient and loyal borough of 'Ca 1 mai-i heu,"impressed" with a dive sense of the gracious-in- terposition of Providence, and thankful to the Supreriie Rider of the universe lor his-mauitbld goodness to. your iVla- je'ot y's Uumiuions, begieave to approach iout Majesty's throne, to oiler our congratulations on the late memorable and decisive victory, vouchsafed by the Almighty and un. erring Disposer of ail events to your*Majesty's 'fleet, under iy die command of the renowned and ever-to-be-regretied Lord Vij>e«unf Nelson, nobly supported by the brave ofli- cers and crews in that glorious service: a victory brilliant beyond the example in history, and which, though it has deprived the nation and the navy of one of their most il- lustrious puiars, whose fame, immortalised by his heroic ichieveiHents, will animate succeeding ages, causes, ieei- uigiy as we lament the less ot such an exalted character, :md tnourirng it •• h calamity to the country, sensations of joy at the n-tuuipi'aut dispiay of your Majesty's Hag. De- ploring as we do the loss of so heroic a commander, it still behoves us to submit to the decrees of Providencc, and al- though we mo >4 in the iuss ',)' the to tin, to rejoice at the death oi the hero, for he died- as. he 'wished, as every man ought to wishv for his ivins and bis country.
